Learning Styles and Piano Teaching
by Susanna Garcia These difficult experiences are not unique to piano teachers but shared by all who teach. Through learning styles research, teachers are finding ways to turn these failures into successes. Many educators believe that a better understanding of how students obtain, process and internalize information will result in more effective and efficient teaching. This management of information by a student is referred to as the student's learning style. There are many theories of learning style, mostly familiar to educators, but largely unknown to music teachers. Such theories have considered analytical vs. global learning styles, personality types, multiple intelligences, and learning modalities. This article focuses on modality theory and provides help for teachers who wish to identify a student's learning style and adapt their teaching to better match the student's needs.

Sometimes the best songs almost write themselves.
Bill Anderson , in Criswell Freeman (1994), The Book of Country Music Wisdom Punk is not just the sound, the music. Punk is a life-style. There are a lot of bands around who claim to be punk and they only play the music, they have no clue what it's all about. It's a life-style I chose for myself.
Billie Joe Armstrong , New York Rock magazine (April 1998). Interview with Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day It's the way you play that makes it. . . . Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story.
William James "Count" Basie Of course, there are a lot of ways you can treat the blues, but it will still be the blues.
William James "Count" Basie And since September 11 and the war with Iraq, I think people are more attuned to music that's got something to say. It's just a shame that such things have to happen for more people to get into it.
Billy Bragg , The West Australian (16 September 2003). Bragg blends new and old One of the hardest things to do in rock'n'roll is walk it like you talk it.

Owl Prowl
Darkness enfolds the little group of hikers like a shawl. The early spring evening is scented by water, the air velvet against bare skin. Venus hovers below the sickle moon lighting a temporary tableaux above the lake. Clouds scud across the moon. Stars and planets appear then fade. The air stills. It is a night for listening.
Deep woods dweller Jacques Privat walks the levee road around Lake Martin, where he lives, on such a night. Tender spring peepers call to him. A splash on the quiet surface of the water mildly disturbs the calm. Ducks chuckle, a subdued sleepy sound.
Jacques stops at a spot he knows well, where the dense heaviness of a live oak creates an opaque island in the darkness, cups his hands to his mouth, and lets go a whooping hoot, "whoo hoo who oooh." He waits a heartbeat. Another. And then the answer comes, with startling, frightening power, "ah ah ah who ah whoo oo ah."
"That’s a barred owl," Jacques says. "Whooo hooo," Jacques calls, and within seconds, "who ooo who ah" resonates from the deep wood. Jacques raises his hand to his mouth to hoot again, but before he utters a cry, "ho hoo ah," erupts, another owl gives throat to the night. "Wha wha ooo," a third owl answers.
A forth responds, the notes deepening like a pipe organ before bursting into a weird whistling gurgle, a maniacal laughing cry that draws the little group on the levee tight together. Again, back and forth, in rondo and response the parliament of owls fill the night with a sound both beautiful and cadenced with midnight horror. A flask makes the rounds. Dutch courage.
