Guiomar Novaes
Her Life
G Antonietta Rudge , another Brazilian pianist who made an international career in Europe in the beginning of the century and whom Artur Rubinstein considered as one of his musical passions.
In Brazil Mme. Novaes married the Brazilian architect Octavio Pinto, who was probably her greatest admirer. They had two children, Ana Maria and Luiz Octavio. Octavio Pinto was an architect, but also a composer. His piano suite Scenas Infantis (Memories of Childhood), published by G. Schirmer, was recorded by his wife and often played as encore in her recitals. Mme. Novaes was invited by Queen Elizabeth II to play a recital at the opening season of Queen Elizabeth Hall in London on April 30, 1967; the program included works by Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy and encores by Villa-Lobos, Purcell and Vuillemin.
Her Recordings
On RCA Victor
Mme. Novaes's old 78 recordings on RCA are now available on a single CD called GUIOMAR NOVAES - THE COMPLETE VICTOR 78s. That CD was released by (CD 702) I. Philipp - Feux-Follets Op. 24 #3 - rec. 27 June 1919

About Us Our Season Tickets Past Artists ... Home Past Artists Established in 1892 as the Tuesday Morning Musical Club, Tuesday Musical's first concerts were held in local homes and the Fontenelle Hotel ballroom. After 1911 it expanded into local theaters and emerged as a non-profit concert series of international artists, open to all. Many of the artists, unknown at the time of their engagement here, have since become legend; some have been relegated to oblivion, but all contributed in some measure to the musical life of Omaha. It has been estimated that in the first 70 years following the change from club to non-profit organization, Tuesday Musical brought 95 percent of the world's greatest artists to Omaha. Here is a partial list of artists who have been part of this pioneer endeavor:
Charles Wakefield Cadman, pianist
Paul Kennedy Harper
Max Landow, pianist
Eugene Ysaye, violinist
Raphael Navas, pianist
Harold Bauer, pianist
Louise Homer, contralto

Unissued Studio Recordings
(Koch) [2CD] 133 minutes Some pianists just have everything, and for the most part, Guiomar Novaes was one of them. In this all-too-brief survey of her studio and concert recordings at the zenith of a remarkable career, what emerges is a picture of an artist who was far more comfortable and persuasive in front of an audience than in front of a microphone. Nevertheless, this document preserves for posterity the kind of free flowing plasticity, insouciant charm and gentility of phrasing that made her famous. Errors abound in the liner notes, misstating the keys of certain works (we are told , for example, that the Chopin B flat minor sonata is in the major, and that the 13th Prelude is in F sharp minor, instead of F sharp major). Two mazurkas (op. 41:1 and the posthumous A minor) go entirely uncredited. A citation from a review of Novaes by Virgil Thomson implies he had written an appraisal of the performance heard here. It was not, but was the curmudgeonly critic's reaction to an unpublished recording. ORDER THIS CD FROM CROTCHET

Reviews for The Art of Guiomar Novaes:
  • Her last classic recordings
This album was recorded in the late 1960's, and although Novaes had recorded Chopin for Vox/Turnabout label in the 1950's, this recital is still essential, and the recording sounds better than her earlier work. She combined technique with a natural musical flair that is lacking in todays young pianists, and I listen to these old recordings instead of the latest shooting super-stars.
The Brilliant Brazilian Pianist Who is All But Forgotten
Guiomar Novaes debuted in 1915 in NYC at age 19-and was compared favorably to the greatest pianists of the day by top critics. As with most women pianists in those years, she did not receive the attention she deserved. She also recorded in the 40's and 50's for Vox which was not a quality label. A few recitals were recorded by Columbia and later in life, in the 60's she recorded some for Decca, but that was after her prime. As a pianist studying in the 50's, I considered her the greatest Chopin pianist ever and I cherished those few records I had. I am delighted to have these CD's but angry and sad, as are others who know her playing, that she was not included in the Phillips "60 Greatest Pianists of the Century" There are many who would rank her among the top 10! Her Chopin recordings are truly a wonder-lyricism, technique, power, and accuracy at breathtaking speedsJust listen to the Etudes, or the Presto movement of the 2nd Sonata!

Still is his teens, Nelson Freire was awarded First Prize at the Vianna da Motta International Competition, and in London he was awarded the Dinu Lipatti medal presented by Harriet Cohen. His international career began with a series of recitals and concerts in the four continents where he established his reputation as one of the foremost pianists of his time.
On disc, Nelson Freire has made astonishingly few recordings. His first recording released in 1968 stunned the American critics and since then, each rare recording he made has been snapped up and treasured by the piano cognoscenti. In October 2001, Mr Freire signed an exclusive contract with Decca and has just recorded a programme of solo Chopin works which will be released in Spring 2002.
