Roots of Dub Funk Ovuca Echo and the Bunnymen Basement Jaxx ... Mark Laliberte

Various Artists / Roots of Dub Funk / Tanty (CD)
Sample 30 seconds of Dub Funk Association's "Natty Dread Kung Fu" On a certain level, dub is a purely functional form of music sonic mind candy for stoners, tapping into an endless now of a groove that may change (or not), may have instruments come, go and bounce around with tape echoes fluttering behind, but is essentially the same, continuous and unending. So the repetition found in most of the tracks on the misnamed Roots of Dub Funk is excusable, up to a point. Some tracks are pleasant enough; the contributions from European producers The Technician and Alpha and Omega are easy background music. Other songs awkwardly try to attempt cross-genre dub-fusion with hip-hop and two-step styles that sound like a soundtrack for some Jamaican-themed mall food court. Ultimately, there's too little that's truly funky (in any sense of the word) on this collection of overly-sequenced and under-developed tracks. ec

Ovuca / Wasted Sunday / Rephlex (CD)
Sample 30 seconds of "Green Ball" Ovuca is a young fellow from Finland. Although I've never heard of him before (How scandalous!), this is apparently his fourth release on the Aphex Twin's Rephlex label. The Aphex Twin stamp is all over these tracks, particularly in the preponderance of cranky, angular beats laid over happy bunny melodies. It's not a bad influence to have, of course, but it makes it difficult to discern what, exactly, is coming from Ovuca's obviously hyper-creative mind and what's just rehashed Rephlex noodling. That said

Carnegie Hall Announces Plans for New Auditorium Season to Open Sept. 12 with Jazz, Classical, World Music By Brian Wise, WNYC.org Slide Show: Zankel Hall and its construction NEW YORK At a press conference Wednesday, Carnegie Hall announced plans for the inaugural season of Judy and Arthur Zankel Hall, the new 644-seat downstairs auditorium and educational center. Carved from bedrock directly beneath the hall’s main auditorium, the flexible recital space will host more than 80 concerts in 2003-04 including performances by Pierre Boulez, Yo-Yo Ma, Youssou N'Dour, Audra McDonald, and the Kronos Quartet. Designed by the New York-based architectural firm Polshek Partnership in conjunction with Jaffe Holden Acoustics, Zankel Hall sits on the site of a former movie theater, a space that was originally used for concerts when Carnegie Hall opened in 1891. Most noteworthy about the facility is its flexibility. The auditorium can be easily reconfigured through a remote-control system of lifts, steel trusses, and wagons, allowing for different stage positions and seating arrangements. The two-tier auditorium is contemporary in style with curved walls, blonde wood and bronze surfaces.

Both are reincarnations, and, while Miller has firmly established its new life, Zankel is on the threshold of one. Miller was once a clunky, hollowed-out cube of a concert hall at Broadway and 116th Street. By the 1950s, it regularly offered Spartan discomfort to students and music professionals eager to applaud new music by their teachers and friends and sneer at those composers' rivals. Fifteen years ago, the place was gutted, reshaped, raked, given comfortable seats, more even acoustics, better sightlines, and a new name—the Kathryn Bache Miller Theater. And in 1997, in came a new executive director, George Steel, a musician with a wide view of program possibilities for audiences, especially youngish ones open to all competence regardless of the zip codes on the scores.
