MUSIC REVIEW Nonken Reigns By Michael Manning, Globe Correspondent, 10/31/00 Saturday night in Brandeis University's Slosberg Recital Hall, Marilyn Nonken performed one of this or any year's best and most demanding recitals of 20th-century piano music. Titled ''American Spiritual,'' her program comprised works by the American Charles Ives and by the English composer so beholden to him, Michael Finnissy, in whose ''North American Spirituals'' her exceptionally musical approach did the most. Finnissy's music has been described as severe, although the present selections (which also included "Kemp's Morris," written in 1978) are considerably less aurally contentious than his "Seventeen Immortal Homosexual Poets" heard locally less than two years ago. Nonken's performances, which stressed lyricism, abounded in color and nuance, made convincing contextual and rhythmic sense of the sudden storms of sound and the prolonged buffers of silence, and brought clarity and direction to the sometimes self-obfuscating complexity of Finnissy's textures. In ''Kemp's Morris,'' the composer has the pianist wear bells on the wrist, a variant of the Morris dancing tradition of wearing them on the legs. Nonken's attention to the choreography of her hands added that extra measure of control that elevated it beyond mere effect or affectation. Ives's ''Concord Sonata'' is that composer's titanic contribution to the piano's literature, and few are the pianists who can manage it. Even fewer have managed it as well as Nonken, who again employed proven pianistic virtues in the rendering of a wholly original and radical work of art.

Since my late teens, when I discovered the music of Schoenberg and the postwar moderns, I’ve been fascinated by the twentieth-century repertoire. In college, I was fortunate to study with a pioneer of new music piano performance, David Burge, for whom many landmark works were written, including George Crumb’s Makrokosmos I . As my tastes have developed over the past decade, my repertoire now includes a variety of composers, ranging from Alvin Lucier, Mario Davidovsky, Milton Babbitt, Salvatore Martirano, and Charles Wuorinen to younger voices such as Lee Hyla, Jason Eckardt, Jeff Nichols, and David Rakowski. I generally find myself drawn to atonal works that are rhythmically adventurous, conceptually unusual, and physically demanding, and to composers with distinct voices and strong musical personalities. As a performer, I mediate the delicate space between the work as written and the music as heard. Composition, writes the composer Chris Dench, is “the making manifest of a particular vision

Ives: Sonata No. 2, "Concord"
Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata is a beast of a piece, with some of the literature’s thorniest passages over its sprawling length (almost three-quarters of an hour) and requires an expert ability to sort out the texture’s disparate strands. A high percentage of the score contains densely written chords – some would say "muddy" – that also sound muddy if not clarified. As with voicing in Beethoven or other composers, the interpreter here needs to show the listener what to listen to – to point the way amid the thickets. Granted, Ives may have intended some messiness as part of the effect, but the pianist still needs to say, "Here, look at this, even though there are a zillion other things fighting for your attention." Making short work of this complexity, Nonken more than proved her mettle by playing expert tour guide, and the results were scintillating. She was especially effective in the contrasts between crunchingly dense pages that abruptly disappear and in their wake are replaced by wispy soliloquies. As she raced around the keyboard, occasionally pausing for a hymn here and there, some might say this is Ives at his most maddeningly disorganized, but I find this piece exhilarating. It is also exhilarating watching a star pianist perform it, since it is horrendously difficult to play – not only for "getting all the notes" but also in the stamina required.

Morton Feldman, "Triadic Memories" , Marilyn Nonken, Piano, Miller Theatre, Columbia University, New York City, October 26, 2003 (BH)
According to the composer, this piece is "a bit like walking through the streets of Berlin where all the buildings look alike, even if they’re not." If that’s the case, perhaps we all should visit Berlin periodically, as Feldman’s distinctive sound world is unlike any other, and in marked contrast to say, the "new complexity," just to cite a genre at the opposite end of the spectrum. This work, like many of his others, is long (ninety minutes without pause) and very soft; the dynamic level rarely rises above "ppp." It is a remarkable piece, especially when performed with the concentration and artistry shown here by the talented Marilyn Nonken. In her refreshingly straightforward program notes, she explained that she chose "to maintain a steady eighth-note pulse throughout that approximates the heart rate at rest." This is substantially slower than in some of the recordings (i.e., versions by Takahashi or Goldstein), and the result was an almost physical sense of tranquility that pervaded the performance and lingered for hours afterward.
