LAZAR BERMAN
'A career happens if you love music. And if a career does not happen, do not worry because you still have music that you love" says Lazar Berman. His international career began relatively late: in the middle of the seventies, he finally received permission to appear in the United States for the first time. At this point, he was already a greatly admired and renowned artist in the Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries for twenty years. Until his first visit to the West, he was known only by name: a pianist of incredible technical mastery who was able to play the last movement of Chopin's B flat minor Sonata in less than fifty seconds. When Emil Gilels made his début in America, he was convinced that Richter was the only pianist better than himself. A few years later, Gilels spread the new message - he said that Lazar Berman was the best among them. But for almost two decades since his name came to the attention of the public, Berman remained a mystery. His triumphant début in the United States took place in 1976, and it proved that Berman is much more than a master of technique. Within a few months, he had become one of the most highly praised artists of the international music scene. Throughout his sold-out American tours, he captivated audiences with his musical interpretation and grand romantic style. As well as returning to the US in the following seasons, he also made his European debuts in Paris, London and other European capitals. Within a short time, he had made numerous outstanding recordings, among them the Tchaikovsky Concerto with Herbert von Karajan.

Sviatoslav Richter; Leading Russian Pianist
Updated:
Los Angeles Times , Saturday, April 2, 1997
German MOSCOW Sviatoslav Richter, who rose to fame in the Soviet Union in the 1940s to become one of the 20th century's leading pianists, died of a heart attack Friday in a Moscow hospital, the Russian Culture Ministry said. He was 82. Renowned for improvisatory genius, Richter could sell out any concert hall in the world, even at age 80. Although the music world had many pianists who were technically brilliant, Richter was one of the few who excelled both technically and artistically. His was a wide repertoire that included practically all styles, from Bach to Debussy, Prokofiev and Shostakovich. When Richter played a series of concerts at the Los Angeles County Music Center and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in 1965, Times music editor Albert Goldberg said audiences were treated to "true Richter magic." "Pianistically the quality was unvarying," the critic wrote. "He is one of the masters of the instrument."

Piano
Acclaimed throughout the world, Russian pianist Margarita Fyodorova is considered one of the greatest pianists of her generation. Her long and distinguished career has included appearances throughout the former Soviet Union, Europe, Asia, South America and the United States. She has performed as soloist with all the major Russian orchestras, including the Moscow and Leningrad Philharmonic, under the batons of Mravinsky, Svetlanov, Rozhdestvensky, Ivanov and others. At the request of Dmitri Shostakovich, Madame Fyodorova gave the western European premiere of his Second Piano Concerto, using the original manuscript Shostakovich entrusted to her on that occasion. Madame Fyodorova is noted for the breadth of her repertoire, and commands one of the largest of any living pianist; she plays more than 70 piano concertos. She has performed the complete works of many major composers in her celebrated "monograph" concerts. These include the complete keyboard works of Bach, Chopin, Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, Prokofieff, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff and many others. She is renowned for her interpretations of the music of Alexander Scriabin, whose complete works she presented in a series of five concerts for the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1972. She is also a champion of contemporary Russian music, and frequently programs significant new compositions. Before winning the Smetana Competition in Prague and the Silver Prize in the J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1951 (alongside Tatiana Nikolayeva's Gold and Jorg Demus' Bronze) Madame Fyodorova was a protégé, along with her colleagues Richter and Giles, of Heinrich Neuhaus at the Moscow Conservatory. A versatile performer, she is also a leading Russian harpsichordist and an authority on baroque music. Madame Fyodorova is a senior faculty member of the Moscow Conservatory where she has taught for more than 25 years, and has recorded extensively for Melodiya records. Margarita Fyodorova's outstanding career earned her the distinguished title of Honored Artist of the RFSFR, awarded her by the Soviet government in 1972.

trovar.com Sviatoslav Richter - an introduction to his life and work Sviatoslav Richter, widely regarded as one of the finest Russian pianists of the twentieth century, was born in Zhitomir, in the Ukraine, on March 20, 1915. His father, Theophile, was an organist and gave the young Sviatoslav his early musical training. Richter’s mother, Anna, was a talented artist who loved music and was related to the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. The young Richter was essentially self-taught and developed his exceptional technique by playing whatever music he liked. By the age of eight he was playing opera scores, including the music of Richard Wagner. He had the ability to memorize any music at sight. Richter grew up in Odessa, where his father taught at the Conservatory. Also growing up in Odessa at the same time were Emil Gilels and David Oistrakh, who would later become Richter’s chamber-music partner. During these years he was a “repetiteur,” or rehearsal pianist, in Odessa. His debut as a soloist came on February 19, 1934, at the Odessa House of Engineers. The program included the Chopin Ballade no. 4, Polonaise-fantaisie, and E Major Scherzo, as well as a selection of Nocturnes, Etudes, and Preludes, all difficult pieces. The recital was a great success and Richter’s career as virtuoso was under way. In 1937 Richter left Odessa for Moscow to study with the great pianist and pedagogue Heinrich Neuhaus. Richter did not take the entrance exam at the Conservatory. He simply asked Neuhaus to teach him. Neuhaus listened to his playing and said, "Here is the pupil for whom I have waited all my life. In my opinion, he is a genius." Neuhaus declared that he had nothing to teach Richter but accepted him as a pupil anyway. On November 26, 1940, while still a student at Moscow Conservatory, Richter made his Moscow debut. Here he gave the first public performance of the Prokofiev Sonata No. 6 and made a highly favorable impression on both the audience and the composer. When Prokofiev completed his Seventh Sonata in 1942, he gave it to Richter for the premiere. Richter learned the piece in only four days, and performed it the following January. Richter also gave the first performances of Prokofiev’s Eighth and Ninth Sonatas, the last of which was dedicated to Richter.

Famous Piano Teachers: Part One
There is a large amount of information on the web about the great piano teachers of the past . This article is an attempt to organize some of that information. It is nowhere near being complete, but by browsing through this information you should be able to get a good idea of who some of the teachers were, and who some of their students were. I have not tried to go into any detail about methodology or technical approaches except in the broadest sense where appropriate.

Pyotr Tchaikovsky
(1840 -1893) created a great number of piano works. These compositions were intended to serve specific purposes and be performed in certain environments. Works like the First Piano Concerto were created for big concert halls to celebrate solemn moments of Russian history and unify the national spirit. Miniatures were usually performed at home, in a circle of friends and family. They are a symbol of the privacy and comfort of many wealthier Russian homes and reflect their style of life in the 19th century. Though Tchaikovsky's piano miniatures were addressed mostly to nobles and prosperous townsfolk, his music speaks to everyone. Intimate and sincere, with rich melodies and simple to perform, the music gained great popularity for the composer.
This album combines Tchaikovsky piano miniatures from Op. 5, 7, 10, 19, 40, 51 and 72.
Sviatoslav Richter (1915-1997), one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century, was born in Zhitomir, Ukraine, into a family of musicians. His talent was recognized and encouraged from a very early stage. The Richters soon moved from Zhitomir to Odessa, a provincial city in Southern Ukraine. Theophil Richter, father of Sviatoslav, was a professor at
Odessa Conservatory. At the same time and in the same city lived also David Oistrakh and Emil Gilels. By the age of eight Richter played opera scores by Wagner and at age nineteen he gave his first solo piano concert.
