Above all, Fischer-Dieskau's Wozzeck and Dr.Schon role is excellent.
This CD must be criticized due to liner note. Looking at LP version of Wozzeck(DG 138 991/2), its liner note includes precise article on Georg Büchner(original author of the stage play "Woyzeck") and Alban Berg by Gustav Rudolf Sellner(Stage producer of Berlin Deutsch Opera) and on consideration of recording by Otto Gerdes(Recording producer). His strongest 'competitor' is perhaps Vladimir Horowitz, but his weak point is the width of repertoire. Other Austro-German pianists like Backhaus Rudolf Serkin and Kempff are not comparable to Richter in this respect, too. Sviatoslav Teofilovich Richter was born in Zhitomir, in Ukraine. His father(Teofil) learned piano and organ in Vienna Conservatory, but moved to Ukraine because of the illegal duel. He married one of his pupil. But our young Slava did not learn much from his father. He almost taught himself. We can't know the excat reason, but I guess there are some clue in Heinrich Neuhaus's 'The Art of piano playing'; Piano teachers are so busy teaching his pupils as to have little time for their own children. Anyway, we can hear of Slava that he can play Liszt's work at 16, and the most complex orchestral scores(e.g. Wagner) at first sight. He was enough to be called a real genius.
He began the legendary musical life only at 16 at Odessa by a Chopin program, which was a great success. He came into the Odessa Opera as a

    The Artist
Alexei Lubimov , born in Moscow in 1944, received his musical training at the Central Music School and the Moscow Conservatory, where he was one of the last students of Heinrich Neuhaus. Lubimov, who is unique in the extraordinary breadth of his musical expertise, first made his mark as a champion of contemporary composers in 1968, when he gave the Moscow debuts of works by John Cage and Terry Riley. He also premiered works by Schoenberg, Webern, Stockhausen, Boulez, Ives, Ligeti, and many others in the Soviet Union. He is the founder and artistic director of Alternativa, the Moscow festival of the musical avant-garde. For some years, Lubimov was denied permission to perform outside Russia. During this period he developed an interest in authentic instruments. In 1976, he formed the Moscow Baroque Quartet and gave the first performances on fortepiano in the USSR of works by Mozart and Haydn. Together with Tatiana Grindenko, he founded a baroque ensemble, the Moscow Chamber Academy. Since 1987 Lubimov has performed outside Russia. He made his North-American debut at Lincoln Center in April 1991. Lubimov has a long-term contract with Erato, for whom he has recorded the complete Mozart Sonatas on fortepiano. Recent releases include Schubert Impromptus, Beethoven Sonatas, and works by Chopin and Brahms.

Complete Music for Cello and Piano
Born: 20 March 1915, Zhitomir (near Kiev)
Died: 1 August 1997, Moscow Ukrainian pianist Sviatoslav Richter was soon dubbed "notoriously unreliable" - cancelling concerts almost every year (often at he last moment) or changing his whole programme. But there were always inner constraints or health reasons, and ultimately it has not harmed his reputation as one of the world's finest pianists. As a boy, Richter had only sporadic piano lessons, yet a natural, insatiable curiosity about everything to do with music helped him on his way until he began as a repetiteur at the Odessa Opera when he was eighteen. This period endowed him with a knowledge of opera unusual in a pianist and taught him how to make the piano "sing". The same year he began rehearsing the piano literature in earnest, gibing his first public recital - still self-taught - the following year. At twenty-two he entered the Moscow Conservatory, as a pupil of Heinrich Neuhaus, and under the latter's intelligent direction he matured into a professional, without losing his originality.

    Heinrich Neuhaus
was not only a great pianist in his own right, but was also very much responsible for bringing Prokofiev together with one of his greatest interpreters of the last century, Sviatoslav Richter. Of most interest to Prokofiev fans on this site is a pdf download of an extract of Richter's essay on Prokofiev: the extract itself is more or less redundant now since the essay has been published complete in 'Sviatoslav Richter - Notebooks and Conversations' by Bruno Monsaingeon. But the download is still worth checking out as it also includes an interesting (though in idiosyncratic English) introduction by Valery Voskovoinikov and Lorenzo Seno, and useful explanatory footnotes for Richter's entire essay which - as far as I know - have not been published elsewhere. The site also has pictures of Prokofiev and his family, plenty of pictures of Neuhaus, and essays written in memory of Richter in the wake of his death in 1997.

The son of a Russian mother and of a musician father who emigrated to the Ukraine from Germany, pianist Sviatoslav Richter was born near Zhitomir on 20 March 1915. He was a violinist and coach before perfecting his pianistic skills with the Moscow master teacher Heinrich Neuhaus. At the age of 19, the young accompanist/conductor made his debut in Russia, and shortly thereafter Prokofiev dedicated his Ninth Sonata to him. Richter was a legend in the West even before he finally appeared in Central Europe in the 1950s. His first U.S. concert in 1960, at New York's Carnegie Hall, was preceded by great expectations. His recordings had already caused a sensation: the most prized were his early recordings of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto and Sonata, his thunderous interpretation of Prokofiev's First Concerto, and his dazzling performances of Schumann's and Liszt's virtuoso works.

Robert Fulford's column about Glenn Gould's 1957 Russian tour
Globe and Mail , March 11, 1998) The great hall of the Moscow Conservatory was only half filled on May 7, 1957, the first night of Glenn Gould's first European tour. At the age of 24 Gould was already well launched in North America, having played with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein and recorded Bach's Goldberg Variations. But in Russia he was largely unknownuntil the May 7 concert changed everything. News of his talent flashed around Moscow, and tickets for his remaining concerts sold out the next day. He "became famous literally overnight," according to Sofia Moshevich, a pianist who grew up in the Soviet Union and now lives in Toronto. She discusses Gould's Russian trip, a great event in Canadian cultural history, in an article for GlennGould , the twice-yearly magazine of the Gould Foundation (P.O. Box 190, 260 Adelaide Street East, Toronto M5A 1N1). An engaging combination of scholarship and nostalgia, GlennGould resurrects obscure Gould interviews and reviews, covers new Gould books, announces events like the international Gould conference in Toronto in September, 1999, and charts the progress of his reputation around the world. The issue containing the Russian piece also has a fascinating article about Gould's status in Japan, written by Junichi Miyazama, the writer and critic who regularly translates Gould material into Japanese.

    Alexander Technique for Musicians
    Working to a Principle
by Pedro de Alcantara The principles and procedures of the Alexander Technique apply to all areas of musical activity, from technique, sound production, and interpretation, to daily practice, rehearsal routines, and the mitigating of stage fright and health problems. My first book, Indirect Procedures: A Musician's Guide to the Alexander Technique , was published by the Oxford University Press in 1997. In it I discuss in detail the applications of the Technique to music-making. Here I propose to highlight a few of the points I elaborate in my book, in particular those concerning a musician's daily practice. Although I address these observations to an imaginary musician reader, I should like to think that non-musicians could benefit from studying them too. 'A person who learns to work to principle in doing one exercise,' wrote Alexander, 'will have learned to do all exercises, but the person who learns just "to do an exercise" will most assuredly have to go on learning to "do exercises" ad infinitum '. Let us establish a series of constants which, taken together, create the working principle to which Alexander refers.

The film about the incomparable Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter is an experience for all, who have been deeply affected by this man's art. Richter was often called "the best pianist in the world" - and not just by the press, but by many leading pianists themselves. This film contains treasures of archival footage of Richter in recitals, his own recollections of his long and fascinating life and the on-camera interviews given just before his death. The film is very well-made, balancing as it does Richter's voice-over narration with historical footage of many events in the Soviet Union - among them, Stalin's funeral. It is incredible to follow the life of one human being, who rises to world prominence out of the circumstances, which made his very survival questionable and to sense in all of it the Guidance of a Higher Power. The Guidance, which is available to
