Saturday, September 14, 2002 :::
Before, I begin, if you wish to learn more about Kaikhusru Shapurji Sorabji, go here: http://www.music.mcgill.ca/~jwapnick/sorabji/sorabji.html . It contains a link to the Sorabji Archives near London, from whom I purchased the manuscript.
Today, I begin my great quest. At approximately 6:45pm, my mom came into my room and delivered my package: my own photocopy of the manuscript to Sorabji's 1917 Sonata, named "#0". It is named thus because he later, in 1919, wrote his Sonata No. 1. My goal - To create a typed version of this manuscript, and possibly publish it in the process. This is a monumental task, considering that there are 30 pages, roughly 5 lines of music per page, each line containing 3 staves instead of the normal 2. In the words of Soheil Nasseri, the only pianist capable of playing this song, this guy is "an asshole." Why am I doing this you might ask? IB Extended Essay.
I began trying to type this thing not long ago, around 9:00pm. I had a few months earlier downloaded an eval. copy of a software called NoteWorthy Composer for free and it is, quite put, terrible. Don't download it. It's free, but there are much better ones out there. Well, it began fairly easily, I got the title and composer down with no trouble at all. I decided to skip the text and write it in later (did I mention that it is in french, script, and very small?). Well, so I began in measure one with my 3 staves of music. Now, you might ask yourselves... what is the time signature of this monster? 4/4? 2/4? 3/8? No, it is not that simple. Haha. The piece begins in 7/4. Yes... 7/4. And proceeds to change time signatures EVERY MEASURE for the first page... I have decided not to look further yet so as to avoid scaring myself to death.

Saturday, September 28, 2002 :::
Since my last post, all I have succeeded in doing was deciphering all the markings of the sonata throughout the piece. I have yet to being typesetting it, although I have decided that I will use Sibelius in doing so. I heard it was a very high-class software, and I hope it will be. Well, being as I still haven't really accomplished much, I wanted to post the New York Times review of Soheil Nasseri's Carnegie Hall performance. Being as this archive is dedicated solely to Sorabji, I will merely post those sections dedicated to this composer:

I'm now officially 24. One more number closer to the depths of mortality. Ugh.
I always feel really anxious when I have birthday bashes. Ever since I was little, I would get super excited for my own birthday parties, but then an overwhelming sadness would hit me soon after. I think it's the idea that all the important people in your life gather together just for you (or to hook up with your hot friends in some cases, but hopefully not in all). I find it somewhat discomforting because the only other time that really happens is during your funeral. So I always end up thinking that God's giving me this chance to see everyone one last time because I'm going to die soon. Yes, I can be paranoid at times.
I went to a bar 2 weekends ago, and it really made me think how things would be if the meeting-at-bar scene was really part of my culture. That's one way in which normal people hook up, they meet people at bars and clubs. The whole thing sounds so sleezy to me, but as my friend said, if YOU'RE there and YOU'RE normal, then there are probably plenty of other equally normal people there. But the idea is just inconceivable to me; what if they're a psycho murderer or a serial rapist? The truly crazy usually don't look crazy; for example, I think the unabomber used to a be a well-respected berkeley professor.
Anyways, so I walked into this bar with my friends just to chill, and I notice this one pretty cute guy. But then he was out of sight for awhile, until he came up and sat next to me a couple funny comments. (Guys, if you're trying to pick up girls, funny comments are the way to go because girls can shun the "hey baby let's get it on" pick up line, but they can't shun a funny comment). So this guy was really sharp, witty, and charming, and we talked for quite awhile, but then that was it. He lived close by so he invited me to visit his place (it was 1 in the morning), and inititally I thought 'oh cool, that would be fun to see other people's apts,' but then thankfully I wasn't drunk with alcohol, or naivete, so I thought 'waaaaayda minute! "visit?" as in a one-night-stand visit?!' No digits were given either.

Oh, What a Sticky Web We Weave
NY Times - Joyce Wadler Sept. 9, 2003 We depend on our friends at GQ for direction in matters of style, so when we heard that there was going to be a party in honor of the new editor in chief's first official issue last week, we had to go. The new editor, JIM NELSON, has been saying that he intends to make GQ more topical, that he is a newshound, that he loves pop culture; so certainly, you'll want to know about his hair.
It was combed up to a peak on the top of his head in a very subtle way, which nonetheless reminded us of TINTIN. (Style interpretation: The new GQ man will be bold. Impish. Disinclined to make jokes about Belgium.) Mr. Nelson, who wore a Prada sports jacket, yellow tuxedo shirt and Limited Edition jeans from the Gap, explained that he liked "doing the high-low thing." (Style interpretation: The GQ man makes more money than we do.)
As we were chatting about his background, Mr. Nelson also told us that he once worked as a comedy writer in Hollywood. Actually, he quickly clarified, he was a writer's assistant. "It was sort of like ROSE MARIE on the DICK VAN DYKE show," Mr. Nelson said. "You sit around the table with the writers, writing down everything they say — `doing table' it's called — trying to keep up with them as they're saying a million zillion jokes. It's sort of like a writer, but a half-writer, which is a painful thing in Hollywood."
(Style tip: Uh, the GQ man is unafraid to get in touch with his feminine side? No. That would be the old GQ. We've got it! Once you're top dog, it is perfectly fine for the GQ man to tell a story equating himself with a middle-aged woman in a powerless position who was comic relief. But wait until you're top dog.) Inside the party, at the Hudson Studios in Chelsea, we were intrigued with a young man who had a Tintin hair style just like Mr. Nelson's. (A bold move, young fellow, and whether it will make you or break you at the new GQ we cannot say.)
