Pianist
A pianist is a person who plays the piano . A professional pianist can perform solo pieces, play with an orchestra or smaller ensemble , or accompany one or more singers or solo instrumentalists . A performing classical pianist usually starts playing piano at a very young age, some as early as three years old. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music . Average review score: Beautiful and Captivating Mr. Nakamatsu's Chopin interpretation is absolutely beautiful and poetic, and it does not suffer from the quirky eccentricities that some performers add into their interpretations- instead, it is fresh, clear, precise, dynamic, and captivating. A negative is that the recording suffers from some echoing reverbs. However, this is more than made up for by the amazing Steinway concert grand that Mr. Nakamatsu used for the recording: it has a brilliantly rich and sonorous tone that magically assists him in conveying the deep emotions and the lyrical richness of Chopin's music- indeed, this is one of the best pianos I have ever listened to. Lovely Playing!

El Camino Youth Symphony
Jon Nakamatsu came home. But if you missed his performance last Saturday with the San Jose Symphony, there's no need to panic. He's coming back to the Bay Area in just a week to perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 2 with ECYS at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 9 and Sunday, March 10. "It's a big event. I'm looking forward to it," said Nakamatsu. Nakamatsu, best known for his win at the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, is also locally remembered as a Stanford University alumnus and former Saint Francis High School German teacher. Although Nakamatsu now tours nationwide with 60-80 concerts a year, he still makes regular stops in the Bay Area. "Playing for the hometown crowd is really fun. You can't disappoint the people who supported you for so long," he said on Sunday.

Pianist Jon Nakamatsu, winner of the Gold Medal in the 1997 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform a free concert at Drake University on Friday, Feb. 13. The performance will start at 8 p.m. on the Jordan Stage in Sheslow Auditorium in Old Main, 25th Street and University Avenue.
A native of California, Nakamatsu is the only American to win the Van Cliburn Competition since 1981. That feat turned the former high school German teacher into a popular hero overnight in the highly traditional medium of classical music.
Nakamatsu's extensive recital tours throughout the United States and Europe have featured debuts in New York City (Carnegie Hall), Washington, D.C., (the White House and the Kennedy Center), Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Paris, London and Milan. He also has appeared as soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The New World Symphony, as well as the orchestras of Cincinnati, Dallas, Dayton, Detroit, Fort Worth, Honolulu, Milwaukee, New Mexico, Rochester, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Toledo and Utah. Named Debut Artist of the Year (1998) by National Public Radio's "Performance Today," Nakamatsu has been profiled by "CBS Sunday Morning" and Reader's Digest magazine. He records exclusively for Harmonia Mundi USA, which has released five CDs, the most recent of which contains performances of Rachmaninoff's “Third Piano Concerto” and “Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini,” with Christopher Seaman and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.
