Bates People in the News Pianist Jon Nakamatsu to perform with Bates Orchestra Oct. 22, 2003 Classical pianist Jon Nakamatsu Classical pianist Jon Nakamatsu, gold medalist in the 10th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, will perform Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto with the Bates College Orchestra at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall, 75 Russell St. Called "a major pianistic talent" by the Denver Post, Nakamatsu first performed at Bates in September 2002 in the Bates College Concert Series. A California native and former high school German teacher, he secured his place on the international scene in 1997 by winning the coveted Cliburn gold the first American to have achieved this distinction since 1981. Equally comfortable in solo recital, chamber ensemble or in front of an orchestra, Nakamatsu brings a formidable grasp of repertoire ranging from Bach to contemporary composers like Lukas Foss. "Besides being an astounding technician," wrote Chicago Tribune reviewer Dan Tucker, "Nakamatsu shows impeccable taste; he puts a high gloss on anything he plays." Nakamatsu will make a five-day visit to Bates that culminates with the orchestral concert. "I'm quite excited about getting to know him better and all of us being on stage with him," says Carlsen. Composed in 1868, Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor (Op. 16) is a staple of the Romantic repertoire and is the work that first put this Norwegian composer on the international stage. Lively, tuneful and imaginative, the concerto is overtly indebted to Norwegian folk music and as such is an enduringly popular result of a 19th-century wave of musical nationalism.

Mr. Nakamatsu was recently named Debut Artist of the Year by NPR's Performance Today. He is featured in Playing with Fire, a documentary about the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, which began airing nationwide in October 1997 on PBS. Harmonia mundi issued a CD of works by Frederic Chopin in the fall of 1998, in addition to the previously released recording of live solo performances from the Competition. Mr. Nakamatsu has also made a live CD recording at the Dvorak Hall in Prague with the Brno Concert Orchestra and the Masterworks Chorale. He has studied piano privately with Marina Derryberry since the age of six and has also worked with Karl Ulrich Schnabel as well as pursuing extensive studies in chamber music and musicology. In addition, he studied composition and orchestration with Dr. Leonard Stein of the Schoenberg Institute at the University of Southern California. Mr. Nakamatsu is a graduate of Stanford University with a bachelor's degree in German studies and a master's degree in education. During the 1998-99 season, Mr. Nakamatsu toured the United States and Europe including recitals at Jordan Hall in Boston; Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley; the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; and appearances in France, Italy, and Switzerland. On June 8, 1997, pianist Jon Nakamatsu was the Gold Medal winner of the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the first American to have achieved this distinction since 1981. Named Debut Artist of the Year (1998) by National Public Radio's "Performance Today," Mr. Nakamatsu has made three recordings, two of which are available on the harmonia mundi label. Jon Nakamatsu's extensive recital tours throughout the United States and Europe have featured debuts in New York City (Carnegie Hall), Washington, DC (John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts), Boston, Chicago, Paris, London and Milan. Jon Nakamatsu, the 1997 gold medal winner at the Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition , will visit Ithaca College on Wednesday, October 21, for a free performance in Ford Hall Auditorium. Featuring works by Beethoven, Chopin, Balcom, Stravinsky, and Liszt, the 8:15 p.m. program is the same one Nakamatsu will perform five days later in his debut at Carnegie Hall, where ticket prices range up to $50 per seat. Then a 28-year-old high school German teacher from Sunnyvale, California, Nakamatsu boasted no conservatory background before the Van Cliburn competition. His gold medal effort made him the first American to have achieved that distinction since 1981 and it won him overnight status as a popular hero in the highly traditional medium of classical music. Following his success at the Van Cliburn, Nakamatsu embarked on two seasons of international engagements, including performances with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Boston Pops at Tanglewood, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and the symphony orchestras of Fort Worth, Milwaukee, San Francisco, and Utah, collaborating with such conductors as James Conlon, Mark Janowski, Raymond Leppard, and Keith Lockhart.
