COMA Music library COMA's Music Panel COMA's Music Library was established with the intention of providing a reference resource of new music suitable for amateurs. The music in the Library was acquired through selection (including commissioning), donation (by amateur and professional composers, and by publishers) and recommendation (by composers and publishers). The COMA Music Panel was formed in 1994 to lay down a number of basic criteria to ensure that the music retained in the Music Library was of a high quality and a genuinely useful and practical resource. The first meeting of the Panel, on 21 July 1994, focused on developing these criteria, as well as considering how best to grade the music that was submitted, how to promote it, and what to do with anything that was felt unsuitable. Since this first Music Panel meeting, there have been over 900 works submitted to the COMA Music Library. The original panel members (Diana Burrell, Simon Foxley, James Harrison, Gillian Moore and Margaret Quail, along with COMA Director Chris Shurety), also advised on the selection of tutors for events such as the Summer School, COMA's commissioning policy, competitions and calls for pieces, and publications and recordings. The Music Panel has grown over the years since its inception and currently numbers 25, including experienced UK-based professional composers, past tutors, and representatives from organisations with relevant aims and objectives:

There are also some leftovers from the Tango Projekt.Perhaps the precursor of this Spectrum. Howard Skempton the pre=eminent British miniaturist 'Cantilena' is here, hovering with an air of eridite presence, his voice is rather taciturn like, yet talismanic with a few purely wrought tones. Andrew Toovey's 'Still'I found is not as remarkable as his brilliant chamber works,of dense complexity. Here the upper register clusters seemed overly labored, and unintentional within the context. Jonathan Harvey's 'haiku' is the ultimate effrontery for this miniscule musical parade, a mere single arpeggiated gesture, one press-down of the sustaining pedal, a mere 20 seconds, or as long as the envelope decay dies. I found overall that it is the structural context that harbors the conceptual complexity, even the more pronounced examples as Roger Redgate's 'trace' is not as rhythmically forbidding as a measured particle exhumed from Ferneyhough, who is mirabile dictu absent from the proceedings here. Also the epigones of complexity, as Barrett, Dench,Fox are out of the picture.Why?.If you smite their faces do they not shed a tear,if you cut them, do they not bleed.

A 20 th Century Tower of Babel This lecture by 's founder and Emeritus Editor, given as part of the Inte rnational Composers Master Class and Music Week at Bilbao , is a reflection not only of Dr Peter Woolf's personal interest in contemporary music but of his international standing as a critic on the subject. Through many years of music going, both in the UK and abroad, PGW has been at the forefront of introducing UK audiences to new and unfamiliar composers, most notably by conceiving and launching in summer 1999. At a time when many music journalists both in the mainstream press and in the newer forum of Internet journalism have been hardened against contemporary composers PGW fought hard to give these new composers the recognition they deserved. Under his editorship, covered festivals ignored by all but the most radical print sources - and in many cases the international festivals reviewed by him remain the only English language reviews available.
