Reviewer: "Guys and Dolls" crew, cast – take a bow
By Sondra Erickson Princeton High School cast, pit orchestra and crew need to take a bow for their outstanding production of “Guys and Dolls,” a musical comedy of Broadway taking us back to the early ’30s and New York City’s picturesque population of eccentrics, gamblers, Salvation Army workers and lots of nonconformists. It is the story of good versus evil with good winning out – the work of a struggling Salvation Army mission in downtown New York trying to change the bad habits of a dozen craps shooters and hoping to convert them and others to a better life by knowing the Holy Scriptures. In case you have forgotten, the musical boasts such favorites as “Bushel and a Peck,” “If I were a Bell,” “I’ve Never Been in Love Before” and “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat.” Caught up in the chronic New York scene of gambling is Nathan Detroit and his chorus nightclub-singer girlfriend of 14 years, Miss Adelaide. Talk about talent in these two portrayals. Charlie Moe played Detroit as though he had lived in the day of high rollers in New York. Even his musical lines were punctuated by a New York accent. Moreover, the same can be said of Tara West as Miss Adelaide, singing in a rich, New York contralto, even though her character was plagued by sneezes. What is even more laudable is that the characters made us believe their plight. Detroit is broke because he takes terrible risks throwing the dice and is afraid of commitment. Miss Adelaide is at her wit’s end as she tries to make the letters to her mother fact rather than fiction (that she and Detroit had been married for 12 years and had five children). As a chorus-line member she longs for a normal life as wife and mother only.

Laurie Beechman
photo by Paul Greco When Laurie Beechman lost her battle with cancer March 8, 1998, the theatre world lost one of its most dynamic performers and one of the all-time great belters. Anyone who ever heard Laurie pour out her heart in such theatre anthems as "Memory" or "I Dreamed a Dream" never forgot the experience of listening to that voice that seemed to go in the ear and move directly to one's heart. Beechman, in fact, possessed a voice that originated from deep in her soul, evoking both the joys and pains of life. She had one of the strongest belts around, but she could also create delicate, softer sounds that moved listeners just as profoundly. Thankfully, Beechman's legacy will be remembered in a new 50-minute documentary produced and directed by Gaylen Ross. Entitled "Listen to Her Heart: The Life and Music of Laurie Beechman," the film will premiere at a by-invitation-only screening March 31 at the Directors Guild in New York City. In addition to the commentary from some of the theatre's finest, the documentary boasts some of Beechman's show-stopping vocal moments. Producer Ross explained to me earlier in the week, "What we tried to do is find highlights from her Broadway career but also not eliminate the cabaret part of her life, which was so important. We, of course, have 'You'll Never Walk Alone,' which was the closing number she did for President Clinton's inaugural. That was one of her last performances in public — it was an amazing moment. And, we found some wonderful archival broadcast material. We have her singing 'Tomorrow,' which she never did sing in

UMS will return to Hill; season to include stars
May 5, 2003 BY MARK STRYKER
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER The University Musical Society will celebrate its 125th anniversary season by regaining use of its signature venue, Hill Auditorium, which reopens in January after 20 months and $39-million worth of remodeling. The venerable University of Michigan arts presenter announces its 2003-04 music events today. The season counting previously announced theater and dance events, includes 68 performances of 43 events 14 percent fewer events than this season. UMS officials blame the weak economy, cuts in state arts funding and tight university budgets for the drop. But the familiar integrity of UMS' programs, which feature international stars, insider favorites and exploratory ideas, remains intact. And the face-lift to Hill promises a shot of enthusiasm and relief for audiences and UMS officials. The renovations include new mechanical systems, rest rooms, lower-level lobby, seats and wider aisles. The changes will reduce seating capacity from 4,100 to about 3,500. Without Hill, UMS has been forced to use alternate venues, including Orchestra Hall in Detroit and the Detroit Opera House, for its signature Choral Union series. Subscriptions to the Choral Union series dropped 15 percent this season. Average revenue per Choral Union concert dropped 24 percent. Still, UMS officials say overall ticket revenue for all series is up 22 percent, mostly due to the Royal Shakespeare Company residency.

The group delivers upbeat pop-electronica in a way that is mysterious, sultry, and atmospheric. She play keyboards and guitar (favoring old Fender Strats!), and Mark Partridge handles guitars. I can't stop singing the melodies to myself. That's a good sign, even though I'm not much of a singer. I think you'll be humming along too!
