Joshua Bell
The poetic musicality of Joshua Bell has earned the American-born violinist a prominent position among the leading musicians of the world. As winner of the Seventeen Magazine/General Motors competition, he came to national attention at 14 years of age. His Philadelphia Orchestra debut that same year, followed by his Carnegie Hall debut, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and subsequent exclusive recording contract, created a sensation that rapidly spread throughout the music world. Today, at age 30, Joshua Bell has earned a reputation not only as a dynamic performer, but as a dedicated and thoughtful musician who has successfully bridged the gap from child prodigy to inspired and mature artist. Last season marked the inauguration of Joshua Bell's first chamber music festival in London's Wigmore Hall. This season, Mr. Bell returns to Wigmore Hall with pianist Olli Mustonen, bassist Edgar Meyer, cellists Steven Isserlis and Gary Hoffman and the Orion String Quartet for performances featuring works of Martinu, Bartok, Kodaly, and Dvorak. Additional chamber music projects range from festivals in Salzburg, England and Edinburgh with Steven Isserlis and pianist Stephen Hough, to duo recitals with bassist Edgar Meyer in Illinois, and a trio concert with Mssrs. Mustonen and Isserlis at Lincoln Center in New York. Joshua Bell also tours in recital throughout Europe and North America.

"Janne" Sibelius började pianospelet före skolåldern i sitt hem i Tavastehus.

You actually get a chance to see some of out more famous comedians in action back when they were almost unknown. The highlight of this dvd, for me anyway and hopefully others, was that this is one of the very few chances you get to see the late, great Bill Hicks on camera. For fans of his cd's, it's worth the money just to see him on film. Definitely worth it. He is able to take any topic in the world and find some humor in it. I think anyone, even if you are not a fan of standup, will love this collection. george carlin is the best!!!

JAZZ Michael Brecker Quindectet Wide Angles (Verve) For those who didn't do Latin at school, a quindectet is a 15-piece band. So this is saxophonist Michael Brecker's big band project. But don't expect a conventional big band, with its brass and saxophone sections. This is more "orchestral" in conception, with instruments including french horn, flute, bass clarinet, oboe, violin and cello. Most of the 10 pieces were written by Brecker. There are some gifted soloists on hand (such as Alex Sipiagin, Robin Eubanks, Mark Feldman, Erik Friedlander and John Pattitucci), but Brecker is the primary soloist. He lives up to his reputation as the foremost virtuoso playing tenor saxophonist today, but unless you're a Brecker fan, you may well find Wide Angles Adrian Jackson POP Various Artists Brought To You By The Letter F: Another French Revolution (The Letter F) This sonic smorgasbord of new French music comes on as if the spirit of music historian Alan Lomax has been let loose in the clubs and chatrooms of Paris. But whereas France of late has been synonymous with the glacial grooves of Air or Daft Punk's retro irony, this 13-track collection is big on hip-hop, party-ready rhythms and electronic weirdness. There are the more familiar names, including sister act Les Nubians, but the best of this often excellent collection is such outfits as Clotaire K, who plumb a mysterious middle ground between traditional Arabic beats and a near-Bollywood jigginess. A "new Tanglewood" is being built within a two-hour drive from mid-town Manhattan and Philadelphia in the heart of the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
The new facilities just received a $15 million matching grant from outgoing Pennsylvania governor Tom Ridge. The center, to be known as the Tom Ridge Pavillion, will be the site of summer retreats for various arts organizations. The groups now signed up are the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra (PSO), the Philadelphia Orchestra, the American Ballet Theater, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the Pennsylvania Ballet.
The PSO had been seeking a summer home since 1991, when it stopped playing summer concerts at Great Woods in Pittsfield, Mass. An attempt in the 1990s to set up a summer home in Bedford County, Penn., fell through.
"Now more than ever, we have to appreciate the value of the arts as a way for people to deal with a huge range of emotions," Gov. Ridge said in a speech. "Maybe as we move forward with this performing arts center, we'll inspire the schools to pay as much attention to the arts as to sports programs."
Plans for the center also include performances by music and drama students at New York University.
