Olli Mustonen, playing by numbers
Written for Virtual Finland by Mikko Hannuksela, Ondine
Olli Mustonen has merged the preludes and fugues of Bach and Shostakovich into a two-part programme. The first part was recorded in the order of keys used by Bach, i.e. chromatically ascending. The second part, now released by Ondine, features 24 preludes and fugues selected from both composers, organized according to the circle of fifths. Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) completed the 24 preludes and fugues of Book I of Das Wohltemperierte Klavier in 1722. Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) wrote his 24 preludes and fugues, Op. 87, in 1950-51. Bach's collection is organized by key in chromatically ascending order, whereas Shostakovich - like Chopin in his preludes - follows the circle of fifths. The preludes and fugues of both Bach and Shostakovich are steeped in numerical symbolism. Olli Mustonen perceived that this mathematical logic extended to the structural link between the two collections, a reciprocal symmetry. It is possible to perform all 24 pieces by both composers together without ever having to repeat a key. "These two spirals of keys complement each other wonderfully," Mustonen said of his discovery.

'There's some real magic in this disc. His brilliant, glittering, delicate playing adds an icy edge of enchantment and clarity to pieces that are already enchanting in their own right...One feels that Mustonen understands Sibelius' imagination from the inside; outside, his touch gleams with the otherworldly incandescence of frost patterns in the sunlight'.

'There is no questioning the power of Mustonen's artistic vision... his
strongly profiled response to gesture and character - articulated with breathtaking digital eloquence - animates this work's colourful array of Austrian, Russian, Scottish, Welsh and Irish styles with engaging spontaneity'.

Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Olli Mustonen: Mannerism Over Music By Philip Anson / January 12, 2001 On the Aisle Olli Mustonen, piano Solo Recital Carnegie Hall Jan. 12, 2001 The young Finnish pianist Olli Mustonen is one of the classical piano world's new brat pack who seem to be trying to redefine classical pianism through willful "derangement of the senses", to use a Rimbaudesque phrase. Listening to these technically impeccable performers, one wonders if their experimentation is motivated by boredom with the old or fascination with the new. Along with the provocative Croation Ivo Pogorelich and the flamboyant Russian Arcadi Volodos, Mustonen uses the score as a springboard for his own aleatory experiments with tempo, phrasing, and dynamics. I guess Glenn Gould is the father of this eccentric school of young rebels who wilfully alienate conservative listeners, while building a small but vociferous following among the cognoscenti. Pogorelich's slow tempos and weird silences turn his concerts into sessions of mental torture or sublime zen meditation, depending on your expectations. Volodos is the idiot savant of the Steinway, performing astounding digital acrobatics that verge on a circus act.
