JazzFest 2002

JazzFest Photos:
Jazz fans enjoy a wonderful time and great music at the Pensacola JazzFest in historic, downtown Seville Square. Thanks go out to our individual donors, corporate sponsors, the NWFL and Florida Arts Councils, and all our wonderful volunteers who work hard all year to raise the $50,000 needed to put on this annual free festival, our annual gift to the community! There are usually two stages and almost continuous music. JazzFest 2005 is scheduled for April 3-4 so mark your calendar now!
The Kids Stage will be in Fountain Park and parents are encouraged to bring the children so they can enjoy and learn about America's Music. All programs will be audience interactive. For example, the Swing Dancers can give the kids an opportunity to dance with a real expert! Performers will take questions, maybe even suggestions, from the audience. More information on the Kids' Stage....

    The Joseph H. Patt Interview
(This interview first appeared in Clifton Magazine in the Winter of 1993. The text is from the original article. The images of the band have been added.
    - Tom Wulf, Blackmoon Webweaver) Cincinnati's founding fathers of alternative rock are also Cincinnati's best kept secret. Joseph H. Patt talks to Blacklight Braille.
The percussionists of Blacklight Braille set themselves up in a circle. Congas, cowbell, and assorted hand drums march forth to the listener's ears and shower down in rhythmic melodic drops. Piano and harmonica join the sound orgy, creating a surrea l and intriguing musical assonance- Juba this and Juba that.
    Juba killed a yellow Cat.
    Juba!
chants Blacklight Braille lyricist and conceptual artist, Thomas H. Owen Knight. This is fringe rock as created by Cincinnati-based Blacklight Braille. Sitting on his porch, sixtyish Owen Knight discusses Blacklight Braile and the term fringe rock over a few glasses of blackberry wine.
He describes fringe rock as "Music created by rock musicians, yet not quite meeting the classical definition of rock' n' roll. It differs to the degree that it might be said to fall within in entirely different location, fringe rock. When we started, we were doing a music that was so far out on the fringe that the beauties were cryptic or hidden."

Rilla of Ingleside - by Lucy Maud Montgomery
      CHAPTER XIII
      A SLICE OF HUMBLE PIE
"I am very much afraid, Mrs. Dr. dear," said Susan, who had been on a pilgrimage to the station with some choice bones for Dog Monday, "that something terrible has happened. Whiskers-on-the-moon came off the train from Charlottetown and he was looking pleased. I do not remember that I ever saw him with a smile on in public before. Of course he may have just been getting the better of somebody in a cattle deal but I have an awful presentiment that the Huns have broken through somewhere." Perhaps Susan was unjust in connecting Mr. Pryor's smile with the sinking of the Lusitania, news of which circulated an hour later when the mail was distributed. But the Glen boys turned out that night in a body and broke all his windows in a fine frenzy of indignation over the Kaiser's doings. Mary Vance dropped in one evening to tell the Ingleside folks that she had withdrawn all opposition to Miller Douglas's enlisting.

Promising "listener-friendly jazz and blues", Doug is joined by veteran bassist Skip Kutz , rhythm guitarist Garth Sheard and organist Ross Nykiforuk . This should be a perfect mid-holiday season break. Opening act for the evening is Tara Gibson , singer/songwriter/guitarist/front "man" for 60 watt vamp of Halifax. Her strong, sexy vocals, combined with provocative, original lyrics, are well-crafted and catchy. Tara spent her formative years growing up in Saskatoon where she studied piano with Zane Hrynewich. At 16 she taught herself to play guitar and cut her teeth busking on Broadway, and playing in celtic-rock bands. In 1992 she moved to Halifax where she still lives, works and plays.

It’s as if we have all just come through two years; everything that came before 9/11 is some distant year ago and what’s come after is part of the unfathomable, unbelievable, sobering year that is yet to close.
I don’t know anyone who has been able to make sense of the three and a half months that have just passed and I wonder how much distance and assimilation it will take for writers, musicians and artists of every kind to make cognoscente and meaningful statements about these changes of every kind that affect us now.
What happened in a green Pennsylvania field, Washington D. C. and New York City on the second Tuesday in September will be sorted out by time but not very soon by any of us still in witness.

Guitarist Sean Driscoll's Islands is an organic group effort featuring Bill Vint on saxes, Carlos Sanoja on bass, Patrik Andren on keys, Antonio Sanchez on drums and Doug Hinrichs on percussion. The group goes for a big sound reminiscent of the Pat Metheny Group with the addition of the strong sax playing of Vint. Driscoll's writing and soloing are both equally featured and well-developed here. A group to watch in the future.

    From The Hughes Reviews
The Sean Driscoll Group's Islands demonstrates what good, honest contemporary jazz should be. There are no light, breezy creme puffs or ventures into far-out left field here. The varied tunes on this self-released CD are accessible and listenable, yet challenging and intricate. Guitarist Sean Driscoll wrote all the tunes and is the namesake of the group, but this is definitely a group scene as opposed to leader and sidemen. The group seamlessly navigates shifting time signatures and provides telepathic accompaniment behind creative soloing. The six-piece band features a conventional instrumentation of sax, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums, and percussion. Visit CD Baby for ordering information.
