10. Motion (4:19) Jimmy Raney 11. You And Me (4:19) Al Cohn Total Time 58:12 After his Berklee experience Joe began making a living as a working musician - something he’s done now for over 20 years. He free-lanced on upright bass in and around the Boston area. He’s also spent significant time on guitar as a sideman backing great artists like Buddy DeFranco, Artie Shaw and Al Grey. Joe spent six years and played all across the country with Artie’s band and has been with trombonist Al Grey (a veteran of the Count Basie Orchestra and Frank Sinatra’s band) for about 10 years. Two Funky People (the title refers to the fact that there are two guitarists on this date and is also a direct reference to their famous fathers) is funky in a refreshingly relaxed way. Unquestionably there’s strong energy and drive in both Joe’s and Doug’s playing but nothing is overdone or frantic. I especially enjoy the teamwork and interplay in this quartet - both between Joe and Doug as well as the rock solid rhythm section of Dennis Irwin (bass) and Barry Ries (drums).

La Quinta pianist to give performance of Mozart’s complete works
  • More stories about theater
    By Jeff Britton

    Special to The Desert Sun
April 18th, 2002 Wayne McEvilly eats, drinks and breathes Mozart. The La Quinta pianist often spends Saturdays wending his way through all 17 sonatas, a feat he has clocked at four hours and eight minutes.
On April 27 at the Springs Theater of the Palm Springs Convention Center, McEvilly invites the public to attend a concert that might make its way into the Guiness Book of World Records. Beginning at 1 p.m., with two 20-minutes intermissions, he will perform the entire canon.
According to McEvilly, it will make the first time any pianist has ever done so, not in London, Vienna, New York, nor in any other world music capital, but here in Palm Springs
“It is so extraordinary,” explains the former music professor who holds a doctorate in music from the University of Southern California. “I don’t think any other pianist even thought of doing this. For Mozart lovers, it is one chance in the lifetime to hear them all performed without (sheet music).”

By MARC TOPKIN, Times Staff Writer
    Published May 9, 2004
QUESTION: First car? WAECHTER: Oh, boy. A 1970-something Cadillac. The front window was spider-webbed, it was covered in rust, one headlight didn't work, one window wouldn't go up so I got soaked all the time, the key broke off in the ignition, there were oil spots in every parking spot. QUESTION: Favorite late-night snack? WAECHTER: Whatever's not rotten in my fridge. QUESTION: Dream date? WAECHTER: You mean besides my girlfriend? You might want to put that in there. Hmm. It's got to be Faith Hill. QUESTION: What's in your CD player? WAECHTER: I've got two with me - a pregame mix CD with Metallica, Linkin Park, stuff like that, and (jazz pianist) Norah Jones. QUESTION: Okay, Mr. St. Petersburg, what's your favorite local spot?
