The band featured the great trumpeter Clifford Brown , altoist Lou Donaldson , pianist Horace Silver and bassist Curly Russell in addition to the leader/drummer. All of the music has since been reissued as part of a Clifford Brown box set for Mosaic, but this is the original LP. The first volume is highlighted by "A Night in Tunisia," "Quicksilver" and "Once in a While" and finds all of the participants in inspired form. Classic bop.

Advertising March Email Charles Larry Carlton Al Jarreau was born on March 12th 1940 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Singing since the age of four, he also excelled in sports and was an above average student with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation. In 1975 Jarreau signed with Warner Brothers and released "We Got By". That same year he received a German Grammy for "Best New International Soloist". His second German Grammy came with his follow up album "Glow". In 1977 he won his first American Grammy for "Best Jazz Vocal Performance", A Grammy for "Best Jazz Vocalist" in 1978 and 1980. George Benson was born on March 22nd 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He started singing at the age of 8 in a local nightclub. In 1962, a 19 year old Benson was hired by organist Jack McDuff as his sideman. He released his first album as a leader in 1964 "The New Boss Guitar". In 1976 he released "Breezin" which soared to #1 and won a Grammy for the Leon Russell hit "The Masquerade" and received Platinum sales. He has won 8 Grammy Awards that stretch from 1976 to 1983.

Larry Marietta's Music Notes from Sunday Morning Services at FCCB Sunday, November 23, 1997 THIS MORNING'S MUSIC A first cousin of Mozart by marriage, Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) was pushed by his father to be a child prodigy. While he did not possess the immense talents of his cousin, Wolfgang Amadeus, he nonetheless quickly established a name for himself as a composer, pianist, and conductor. Unfortunately, his personal life did not always equal his professional reputation, as he was incarcerated several times and seemed unable to maintain steady employment. However, his role in music history is epoch-making, for with his operas, he ushered in the era of musical Romanticism. For the piano he wrote brilliant compositions, introducing new elements of chord and passage construction. His use of reoccurring musical themes in his instrumental works provided a vital evolutionary link for the operatic dramas of Wagner. f "Come, O Thankful People, Come" is considered to be one of the finest harvest hymntexts in all hymnody. Its author, Henry Alford (1810-1871), was a prominent English theologian best known for his 20-year labor in producing a four-volume edition of the Greek Testament. A prodigious child, at age six he wrote a life of Paul, at age ten a pamphlet entitled "Looking Unto Jesus the Believers' Support Under Trials and Afflictions." At age 16 he dedicated his life to God by writing on the flyleaf of his Bible: "I do this day, in the presence of God and my own soul, renew my covenant with God, and solemnly determine henceforth to become his, and to do his work as far as in me lies." ST. GEORGE'S WINDSOR was composed by Sir George Job Elvey (1816-1893), organist of St. George's Chapel in Windsor, as the setting for James Montgomery's "Hark! The Song of Jubilee." History 6 W ith the death of Monk Montgomery in 1982, the Las Vegas Jazz Society lost its driving force and the administrative structure gradually dissolved. The Society's spectacular first seven years were over and a ten-year "phase II" began to unfold. After Monk died LVJS no longer published its newsletter, Think Jazz; in the post-Monk decade, Las Vegas jazz history is recorded in Arts Alive, newsletter of the Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada. Fortunately the (now defunct) Arts Council had co-sponsored Jazz Month for five years, so it was primed to continue sponsorship, partnered with the City of Las Vegas. Chris Olson Chris Olson was vice president of Electronic Trading at Solomon Brothers through 1998, where he built the first equity trading desk on Wall Street, a feat which revolutionized the way all equity trading is done today. Later Olson went on to CommerzBank AG, where he was able to apply this technology on a more global level. Today he is hoping to accomplish similar advances in the media management sector, with his company Spheric Media, a D.C.-based software provider that he founded in 1999. Olson is also lending his talents to Holt International Children’s Services, an organization that provides adoption services around the world, specializing in the Far East and Eastern Europe. Olson first became familiar with Holt 18 years ago when his parents adopted his sister Molly. He is currently engaged in a project for Holt that will lend Web-camera technology to adoption shelters thereby giving adoptive parents the ability to communicate with their children in the months before they arrive in the United States as well as allow prospective parents who are not able to travel to the Far East or Eastern Europe to communicate with children there. Jazz Scene 122403 By Don Henke Friday night was another guitar night in the Oregon District. At the Blue Moon Restaurant Tom Downs paired with bassist Dave Spyridon for some nice sounds. The tunes ranged from the Beatles to Duke Ellington and from Joe Zavinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" to "The Woody Woodpecker Song", made famous by Kay Kyser in the '40s. If you can remember that one, you probably don't want to admit it. Due to a death in the family, Doug Simon did not make the gig at Pacchia that night but he sent a worthy substitute in Bugsy Brandenburg, who's been playing in Cincinnati for longer than he probably cares to remember. The veteran guitarist was accompanied by Simon's regular group, saxophonist Tim McCord, bassist Eric Sayer and drummer Brad Elliott. All are excellent players and a sad event turned into an evening of some great jazz. The Noah Bellamy Quartet, minus Noah Bellamy, played at Therapy Café Saturday night. Pianist Lars Potteiger, bassist Ariel de la Portilla and drummer Scott Davis did some admirable trio work, despite a request to "play something by the Rippingtons". They didn't. But they did play "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" and "My Favorite Things", among others. The same night, the Ron Jones Quartet delivered some great jazz, from hard boppers to ballads. Jones had an unbelievable alto saxophone solo on John Coltrane's "Impressions", which was exceeded by young William Menefield's piano solo. Words can't describe Menefield's playing. You have to hear it and then you might not believe it. "Impressions" was followed by "Autumn Leaves", which gave bassist Sonny Stephens and drummer Terry O'Mahoney their chance to shine. Jones also gave a beautiful reading to "Body and Soul" and the evening was capped off by some soulful blues, on which trumpeter Mario Abney sat in.
