Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan in 18 Films
The positive effects of a good film series are many, but one of its most alluring powers is its ability to take long-familiar films and cast them in a new light. Well-thumbed movies, whose every nuance may seem old hat, are revealed as containing fresh, untapped resources. So it is with MOMA’s new series "Waterfront: A Journey Around Manhattan in 18 Films," an ambitious grouping of movies whose unifying element is their interest in New York’s docks, piers and rivers. "Waterfront" includes avant-garde experiments like Charles Sheeler and Paul Strand’s 1921 short Manhattan and Mark Street’s Fulton Fish Market (2003) alongside Hollywood fare that made use of the picturesque squalor of waterside tenements and watering holes. Sam Fuller’s lurid Pickup on South Street (1953) features Richard Widmark as a small-time crook who stumbles into major league Commie nefariousness when he swipes a handbag containing top-secret microfilm. Widmark’s bachelor pad, overlooking the East River, avoids the need for one of those pesky refrigerators by keeping his brewskis cool in the water. Fuller, always fascinated by the seamier aspects of New York, and the world in general, revels in the pre-Giuliani tawdriness of the seaport area. What once housed Julius and Ethel Rosenberg (their apartment was just down the block from Widmark’s screen residence) is now home to Abercrombie & Fitch. As critic Clive James once put it, "There is never any harm in being reminded that the way we live now is not normal."

Hello there, and Happy Earth Day. I've been working on updating and checking the Links page. Thankfully, most of them are in good working order (after I spent a lot of time a couple of months ago, back in my [sigh] pre-defunct iMac-Adobe GoLive days). Revisiting some sites, though, I was so impressed all over again by the good things they had to offer that I urge you to check at least one in particular out: Jacket Magazine . This is a gem which should not be overlooked, a literary e-zine that is just as distinguished, if not more so, as its print counterparts. It is "published" and edited, solely, by poet John Tranter , and you can read his detailed and entertaining explanation of why he made the move to the internet, "The Left Hand of Capitalism," here . I originally included it here because Jacket 's tenth issue was, in part, a tribute to our dear Frank, but I quickly realized that Tranter was making all kinds of other plum editorial decisions. There does seem to be a slight technical issue with some of the links to poems in individual issues. In the last year, Jacket transitioned to a new URL/domain name, and this may be a kink left over from that.

American cellist Kate Dillingham
made her first appearance with orchestra in 1998 with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra "The Seasons" at the Gneissin Institute in Moscow and with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic at the Yusupov Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia. She has been described as "a polished performer with the kind of sensitive understanding that can transform merely brilliant playing into moving musical statement." In 1998, following her debut in Russia, Ms. Dillingham returned to study with Maria Tschaikovskaya at the Moscow Conservatory. In the summer of 1999, she completed a master course in Germany with Professor Tschaikovskaya and was hailed in the German press for her performance of the Haydn Concerto in D, as "The very talented cellist from America . . . one to watch for in the future." Shortly thereafter, Ms. Dillingham returned to Russia to perform and record the two concerti of Haydn in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. She went on to tour in Romania and conduct masterclasses in both countries. In May of 2000, Ms. Dillingham signed with Connoisseur Society Records, which released her recording of the two Haydn concerti with The Moscow Chamber Orchestra "The Seasons" in December of 2001. She can be heard playing the Haydn Concerto in C at www.mp3.com "Kate Dillingham with The Moscow Chamber Orchestra" which to date has received over 50,000 plays. In December of the same year, Ms. Dillingham collaborated with pianist Blair McMillen on her second recording for Connoisseur Society Records which included works by Debussy, Honegger and Fauré.

Academic honors announced for fall semester

for fall 2001 new freshmen
GREEN BAY - Facing its tightest enrollment picture in nearly a decade, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has announced it will stop accepting most new-freshman applications on Friday, Feb. 16, for fall semester 2001. The cutoff is the second-earliest on record for UW-Green Bay. The school stopped accepting applications in late January in 1993 but, in most years since, has remained open until late spring or summer. "Despite our best efforts to 'reel things in' before we reached this point, we're going to have to curtail incoming freshman applications or run the risk of going well over our enrollment targets," says Steve Neiheisel, assistant dean for enrollment services. UW-Green Bay experienced an "exceptionally strong" flow of new applications over the fall, Neiheisel says. More than 2,000 applications have already been received for what are projected to be 980 spots in the next new-freshman class. In addition, improved retention of continuing students and the larger-than-expected freshman class this past year have contributed to the squeeze. UW-Green Bay has a state-approved target of 4,357 full-time equivalent students for fall 2001. The targets help UW System institutions maintain quality by keeping enrollment aligned with available resources such as adequate class sections and student services.
