"The most rewarding aspect of the creative
process for me is the incredible freedom
of expression that it provides, and how
it allows me to share, unconditionally,
states of the soul with others. The
creative process validates my
whole existence; it connects
me to the universe."

Alexandra Mascolo-David
, a native of Lisbon, Portugal, is associate professor of piano at Central Michigan University. She holds a piano diploma from the Oporto Conservatory of Music, and the doctor of musical arts degree in piano from the University of Kansas. Dr. Mascolo-David taught for two years at Iowa State University, and served on the summer faculty of the Interlochen Arts Camp in 1994 and 1995.
Fluency in the Portuguese, Italian, French and English languages has been a great asset to Dr. Mascolo-David when she has played recitals, given lectures, workshops, and master classes in Europe, Latin America, and the United States. In recent years, Dr. Mascolo-David has explored the evocative piano music of Portuguese and Brazilian composers. She is in the forefront of researching the works of Francisco Mignone, and her performances, especially of his Valsas Brasileiras (Brazilian Waltzes), have been widely praised. Her compact disc recording of Volume One of the Valsas Brasileiras was released in February 2001; the Atlanta Journal-Constitution praised this release by stating: “Young Portuguese pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David’s debut disc is a treasure…she plays them [the waltzes] with a poetic, almost improvisatory spirit, in full command of the composer’s urbane voice…a notable disc…”

  • THE GUARNERI STRING QUARTET
    Saturday evening, October 7, 2000, at 7:30 p.m.
    Ames City Auditorium
Virtually a household word, the Guarneri String Quartet needs little introduction to music lovers. The ensemble has circled the globe countless times, playing in the world's most prestigious halls on five continents; their discography is immense and their recordings are the standards to which one often compares other performances. Founded in 1964, the Quartet has just made its first personnel change, as cellist David Soyer steps down and is replaced by his former student, Peter Wiley. Mr. Wiley recently performed at a Town and Gown concert as a member of Opus One.
