In the News Several new and noteworthy pages on the internet feature women on this site:
Barbara Nissman is full of energy and vision as she discusses the rerelease of her performance of the complete Prokofiev Sonatas, as well as upcoming plans for a Prokofiev biography and his concerto recordings. This February 9, 2002 interview with Sugi Sorensen of Prokofiev.org is a reaffirmation of the abilities of the mature artist. Imogen Cooper's performance at Wigmore Hall, January 29, 2002, received a notable review by Colin Clarke for the Music Web . There are not very many internet-only classical performance reviews, particularly featuring women pianists other than the top 4 or 5. It was surprising and impressive to see Olga Kern listed as one of only three musicians in Amy Brown's site of Amazing Women . Sitting right along side of Madonna and Tori Amos, Olga Kern is portrayed as a down-to-earth, struggling young woman, talking about her career and the changes she made in her life between the 1997 Van Cliburn Competition and the 2001. A greatly encouraging article for the young, aspiring woman.

The Russian pianist Anna Malikova gained immediate international recognition when she won First Prize at the ARD Competition in Munich in 1993. This important prize is very rarely awarded and for a period of 12 years Anna Malikova has been the only pianist to win it. Prior to her success in Munich, she was a prizewinner in the three other competitions in which she took part, in Oslo (1988), Warsaw (Chopin, 1990) and Sydney (1992). Anna studied music at the Uspensky Music School of Tashkent with Tamara Popovich and in Moscow at the Central Music School and Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Lev Naumov. Since the late 80s she has performed extensively in the former Soviet Union both in recital and with orchestra and has appeared at many major German festivals. She currently performs regularly throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and South America. Her tour of South America in 1999 was so successful that she was immediately invited back. She recently had to give up her teaching position at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow because she is in so much demand on the international concert circuit. Click CD sleeve for discography
Anna Malikova's rapidly-growing concert duties are accompanied by an active recording schedule. A number of Cds have been released so far: a Chopin recital, the two Concertos by Chopin, Schubert sonatas in A major and B flat major, and a Cd with Liszt transcriptions of Schubert lieder. Further recordings of all Chopin études, préludes and impromptus were released to commemorate the Chopin Year in 1999. With two Cds featuring piano works by Shostakovich and Prokofiev Anna Malikova is presenting music of her native Russia and a new Cd with a selection of piano sonatas by Padre Antonio Soler has just been released.

Since Anna Malikova won 1993 the 1st prize at the ARD Competition, the first time in 12 years that this prize was awarded, her career has been skyrocketing. When one meets her for the first time it is difficult to imagine how she can muster much strength at the piano, as she is a tiny and descreet, almost shy person. However, when the conversation turns to music, her eyes quickly show fire and the fragile person of her changes into a powerful pianist, who knows exactly what she wants.
While reading the biography of the today 35 years old pianist one is surprised to find her still so young, as it is filled with so many events and episodes. But we wanted to know how it was at the very beginning, wanted to know exactly about details of her life. This was sort of laying the foundation, as it was at this type of music school, where early preparations could be made for a professional music education later on. The best students of these special schools from all over the former USSR were always sent to Moscow. explains Anna Malikova. But Tamara Popovich had a reputation of being extremely demanding, far more than anybody else.

So spielte Anna Malikova.
xx

58th International Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój
Date:
Friday, 01 August 2003
End date: Saturday, 09 August 2003
Venue: Poland, Duszniki Zdrój - Duszniki Zdrój Organizations: Foundation of International Chopin Festivals in Duszniki Zdrój Description The International Chopin Piano Festivals in Duszniki Zdrój have been held for the last fifty-eight years. The Chopin Manor is a unique place where several generations of artists, both Chopin and piano music fans, have been convening. This is the oldest Polish music festival, and at the same time probably the oldest pianist festival in the whole world that has been held incessantly over the years. "The Artists of the United Europe" is the motto of this year's festival. The festival will feature artists from thirteen EU countries and representatives of countries that will join the twenty-five united European nations in the future. The programme of the 58th International Chopin Piano Festival is made up of twenty recitals and concerts performed by outstanding musicians, and of master classes led by pedagogues of international renown. The event is going to be the first opportunity for the overwhelming majority of the invited artists to visit Poland.
