By inviting musicians and dancers who rose to fame outside China to return home to reconnect with audiences and performers and revisit the sources of their inspiration, the festival's organizing committee did more than produce a week of dazzling entertainment. It offered dramatic evidence of how far Chinese art and culture have progressed in the two decades since China opened its doors to the outside world. It also demonstrated how eager Chinese artists are to come back when called. Given only eight weeks' notice, artists like the composer-conductor Tan Dun, the pianist Lang Lang, the Metropolitan Opera's bass-baritone Tian Hou Jiang and the dancer Tan Yuan Yuan joined forces with Shanghai's own Huang Dou Dou. The U.S.-based Committee of 100 Cultural Institute, which counts the cellist Yo Yo Ma and the architect I.M. Pei as board members, was hoping to demonstrate that cultural exchange is the best means to furthering understanding.
