Home Biography Awards Reviews ... Send message Reviews "Pianist, Yin Ma, born in China 13 years ago but raised in the United States, is already launched on an international career, having won a handful of competitions, performed in China, Italy and Hungary. She showed affinity for Bartok, an even greater flair for Liszt. Lin responded to (the program's) challenges with exemplary vitality. She played Beethoven's Sonata op. 10 correctly and with solid technical assurance...if her career is not pushed too hard...her Beethoven should be quite special. Her Liszt is already outstanding...she played with a sure sense of the music's evocative charm and her interpretation of the Taranteella was fluent." - Joseph McLellan, The Washington Post, April 2, 1999 "An incredible young piano talent...swept away the audience with a virtuosity that would be amazing for a musician of any age. At only 13 years of age, Yin Ma is not only extraordinary because of her youth, but the beauty and skill of her performing provided an absolutely thrilling concert. The sight of Lin Ma's fingers flying over the keyboard made one's heart race with excitement and awe. Yin Ma has been well trained in the shadings of volume and texture and in bringing her whole body into the emotion of the music."

I specialize in teaching the piano to young people (including youthfully-minded adults). I teach and encourage the new Associated Board Jazz Piano course (beginners to advanced) as well as the Yamaha keyboard. I work privately from home and currently have 15 jazz piano students (from 8 to 40 years old) and 7 classical and 'early music' students. I'm a registered ISM and MU piano teacher and also teach theory and harmony. I run several 'group tuition' classes for primary age children in the Balham and Mitcham areas (Cat's Cradle Music School). These give primary-age children the opportunity to learn general music-making skills at the keyboard at a low price.

Music sometimes will take you where you didn't know you could go. But Hirsh did turn right on the sidewalk down the stairs from his Uphams Corner studio, and "just walked and walked and walked. And I just came across all these images that were beautiful in their own right, but just nasty." He saw chained-off playgrounds, scenic trees with rubbish in their branches. Beautiful and ugly. And then sitting at his window one morning, sipping iced coffee, the 32-year-old Malibu native and assistant director of a camp for Boston teenagers, looked out on Dorchester's Old North Cemetery in Uphams Corner and saw the sunlight glinting off the headstones. And this morning he is in Newport, Rhode Island, playing a piano and singing the words to "Beautiful Ugly," one of five finalists from across the country vying for the top spot in the Newport Folk Festival Talent Search.

While it left much to be desired as a movie, one of the main pleasures to be had from A MAN CALLED HERO was the inclusion of Yuen Biao in a supporting role. While Jackie Chan achieved new heights of stardom in the late 90s, Ah Biao found himself cast in pictures more and more unworthy of his talents. Sammo Hung squandering his talents in the abysmal MARTIAL LAW series was depressing enough but one can only wonder how "third brother" must have felt stuck in swill like TOUGH BEAUTY AND THE SLOPPY SLOP and THE HAUNTED HUNTER. Unfortunately, MILLENNIUM DRAGON continues this sad pattern, thanks to a ludicrous storyline, poor production, and the consistently deadly hand of former kung fu star turned hack director, Phillip Ko Fei (who also has a supporting role here).
