Horowitz, Rachmaninov, Rubinstein, Lhevinne, Cortot, Godowsky, Moiseiwitsch, Solomon, Friedman (Ignaz), Lamond (Frederic), Sofronitzki, Lipatti, Schnabel, Gilels, Arrau, Gieseking, Richter, Michelangeli, Wild, Brendel, Lugansky (Nikolai) Gyorgy Sajo of the rec.music.classical.recordings newsgroup tells us Argerich's tracks contain The Liszt and Prokofiev from the Busoni Competition (1957) and not what the CDnow and Tower track listings show. Also, while finding the sound in the last 2 discs (from the 60s and 90s) enjoyable, he's not happy with the sound on the mono transfers in the first 3 discs.
Paul Goldstein counters that pitch stability is important to him and that this is good on all of these and that he hears a "basically musical sound throughout" in contrast to the "muffled, denatured" results from, as an example, EMI's Schnabel Beethoven sonatas. He recommends this set as a very inexpensive way to hear "some of the most famous old piano recordings."

There I noted his “immense technical fluency” and “innate musical quality” while finding some of his playing “oddly detached”. The same qualities emerge in these fleet, exceptionally well-mannered performances of the Third and Fourth Concertos, set within Ivan Shpiller’s polite, even anodyne, partnership (try the one moment of orchestral glory, the introduction to the Third Concerto’s central “Intermezzo”) and Vanguard Classics’ gentle, soft-focus sound. Such an approach may be temporarily fashionable (recent discs by Andsnes and Thibaudet come to mind) but Rachmaninov’s regenerative glamour and urgency surely require at least as much recognition as his inherently aristocratic nature.

58th International Chopin Festival in Duszniki Zdrój
Date:
Friday, 01 August 2003
End date: Saturday, 09 August 2003
Venue: Poland, Duszniki Zdrój - Duszniki Zdrój Organizations: Foundation of International Chopin Festivals in Duszniki Zdrój Description The International Chopin Piano Festivals in Duszniki Zdrój have been held for the last fifty-eight years. The Chopin Manor is a unique place where several generations of artists, both Chopin and piano music fans, have been convening. This is the oldest Polish music festival, and at the same time probably the oldest pianist festival in the whole world that has been held incessantly over the years. "The Artists of the United Europe" is the motto of this year's festival. The festival will feature artists from thirteen EU countries and representatives of countries that will join the twenty-five united European nations in the future. The programme of the 58th International Chopin Piano Festival is made up of twenty recitals and concerts performed by outstanding musicians, and of master classes led by pedagogues of international renown. The event is going to be the first opportunity for the overwhelming majority of the invited artists to visit Poland.

Taneyev is known as one of Russia’s greatest teachers of composition. Despite counting Prokofiev, Scriabin and Rachmaninov amongst his pupils, little has been heard of his own compositional genius. This concert features his large choral cantata John of Damascus alongside his greatest orchestral work, the forth symphony.
