Interview

Thursday, December 4, 2003 Meet the next great Russian pianist Former child prodigy Nikolai Lugansky lives 'inside of this music'
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Nikolai Lugansky

He's just 31, but already Nikolai Lugansky is being called "the next one" in the line of great Russian pianists. Lugansky will make his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4 this weekend. Modest and easy-going over the phone from his home in Moscow, the pianist says there was never a turning point when he knew music would be his life. "I became a concert pianist before I thought about it," says Lugansky. "When you study in (Moscow's) Central Music School and you're 7 years old, you've already played in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the best halls of Russia. If you are good, you play more and more in other cities. Then, you play abroad. ... So it starts before a young man thinks what he wants to be. It became my life." Whether or not he plays in the style of legendary Russian pianists like Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter - the latter one of his idols - is a moot point. Lugansky's recordings of Rachmaninoff and Chopin on the Erato label reveal an exciting technique - as well as sensitivity, color and transparency.

Saturday, December 6, 2003 CSO's Russian-Gallic night filled with pleasant surprise Concert review
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
An unfamiliar program and two rising-star artists may not have been the best box office draw for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra's first home concert, following its triumphant tour of Japan. But on Friday in Music Hall, there were pleasant surprises in the half-Russian, half-Gallic evening, an evening that began on a restrained note but resulted in two standing ovations. Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky was the soloist in Rachmaninoff's little-known Fourth Piano Concerto , with guest conductor Stephane Deneve, of France, on the podium. The pianist, who won the Tchaikovsky Competition in 1994, proved to be much more than a brilliant technician in his Cincinnati debut. His thoughtful phrasing and luminous touch gave sense to a work that doesn't have the lyricism or grandeur of the Second or Third , and he communicated its beauty.

Usually those who manage the more athletic pieces come up short in poetry in the quieter ones, while the fingers of those adept at evoking the tints and colors in these tone poems have sounded awkward when the pace quickened. Good versions of these works are not scarce, but great ones are exceedingly rare. Artur Rubinstein never recorded the set, though he did record the

PROM 66 Prokofiev, Shostakovich ; Nikolai Lugansky (piano), Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Alexander Lazarev (conductor); Royal Albert Hall, 8 th September 2003 (AR) The highlight of this Prom was the incandescent playing of Prokofiev’s youthful First Piano Concerto by of Moscow born pianist Nikolai Lugansky. Undoubtedly one of the greatest living exponents of the classical Russian repertoire, despite his youth, Lugansky brought colour and clarity to the score, playing with both great agility and vigour: one second, rippling and sparkling; the next metallic, brittle, bringing hard-edges to the first movement. In the closing passages he played like a man possessed, at such great speed his hands were a veritable blur, but despite this frantic velocity, nothing was fudged, and all the notes were given distinct value. Though well paced by Alexander Lazarev, the orchestral playing from the brass was often too loud, sometimes drowned out the soloist. After this inspired first half what followed was a travesty: the noisiest and most crudely conducted account of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.7 in C ‘Leningrad’ (1941)

His view of these 'collected miniatures as large scale work' is at once sure and convincing, and founded upon a marvellous technique. It is of course a tribute to Chopin that the most formidable technical challenge is never less than musical, so that at this level of performance the emotional interpretative insights begin to come flooding in. There is no lack of intense rhetoric, of dazzling virtuosity, but it is always in the service of structural command. Lugansky is helped by a recording which successfully combines clarity, atmosphere and impact; and as such the great C minor Nocturne, Opus 48 No. 1, makes a particularly potent effect.

    Description:
In 1862 came the radical turnabout: Tchaikovsky resigned from his position as a civil servant and enrolled at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire to study composition under Anton Rubinstein and Nikolai Zaremba. In 1866 he began teaching composition at the Moscow Conservatoire, where he remained for 12 years. It was during this intensive and especially productive period of composition that he wrote his first great works. However, his productivity was overshadowed by major problems: in order to counterbalance rumours concerning his homosexuality, Tchaikovsky rushed into marriage with one of his students. This resulted in chaos, inner despair and, finally, a suicide attempt.

Kent Nagano is a member of the Russian National Orchestra Conductor Collegium and has served as artistic director for several RNO commissioning projects. Renowned for his gifted interpretations of both the orchestral and operatic repertoire, he is Chief Conductor of the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Principal Conductor of the Los Angeles Opera and Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra. Starting in 2006, he will become Generalmusikdirektor of the Bayerische Staatsoper.
