A Portrait of Russian Pianist Nikolai Lugansky : Poet and Virtuoso From Klassik Heute
Written by Peter Schlüer
Translated by F. Delbrück
Edited by Valour Two years ago, in a supremely transparent interpretation of Chopin's Etudes , Nikolai Lugansky offered impressive evidence of his ability to present virtuoso pieces with undemonstrative ease, yet full of poetic meaning. Even before his victory in the 10th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, he was already earning his place among the elite of the younger generation of pianists with impressive recordings of Rachmaninoff and successful debuts in Europe, South America and the Far East. And now a new recording of works by Chopin has been issued, his fourth with the French label Erato.
However, it is not only Chopin and Rachmaninoff that the young Russian is able to play with sensitive brilliance: he has already approached works by the German Romantics with astonishing sensitivity, as his reading of Robert Schumann's Symphonic Etudes , in particular, demonstrates. The soft delicacy with which he plays the final posthumous variation, in which shimmering harmonies descend from high F with angelic tenderness, bears witness to his understanding of a psychological dimension which Germans and non-Germans both call, for want of a really accurate translation, "

Nikolai Lugansky, pianist Making his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut is Nikolai Lugansky, the gold medalist of the 1994 International Tchaikovsky Competition. Mr. Lugansky's career has taken him to many of the most celebrated concert halls of Europe including the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Salle Pleyel (Paris), London's Royal Festival Hall, Auditoria Nacionale (Madrid), Gasteig (Munich), and Alte Oper (Frankfurt), among others. Nikolai Lugansky is a gifted chamber musician whose repertoire includes works representing the complete range of epochs and styles from the time of Bach to the present. A Warner Classics International recording artist, his disc of Chopin's Etudes received France's Diapason d'Or award as best instrumental recording of 2000. It was also singled out by The New York Times when Anthony Tommasini wrote: "If you can play the Chopin études like this, you can play anything… Mr. Lugansky could have a big career." Mr. Lugansky won a second Diapason d'Or in 2001 for his recording of Rachmaninoff's 10 Preludes et 6 Moments Musicaux and his recording of Chopin's 24 Préludes won a Diapason d'Or in 2002. Future recordings include Rachmaninoff's Piano Concertos Nos. 1 and 3 with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Future engagements for Mr. Lugansky include concerts with London Philharmonia with Sir Charles Mackerras and the Gothenburg Symphony with Neeme Järvi.

Translated from the original French by Valour As the cheers exploded, Nikolai Lugansky regained his magnificent bearing and received the ovations straight as an i . As this persists and as he knows that he will have to play again, the pianist returns to the stage of the Palais des beaux arts of Brussels, but with a j e ne sais quoi - an imperceptible change. Precisely the manner which he possessed half an hour earlier, before launching into the Third Piano Concerto of Prokofiev. His expression is reserved, his shoulders pulled back, and his steps elongated and bounding until he reaches the instrument. There is something of the feline in this young Russian pianist whom the National Orchestra had chosen, on Friday, for its comeback. At the piano, this keen suppleness translates into a breathtaking ease which the artist never exploits in any way but to serve the music which he offers to share with us. Lugansky is everything in interiority, sometimes even everything in poetry. Instead of a making a direct attack on the keyboard with his arm, in a way which would cause a roar, he prefers a whole body movement which seeks to put the keyboard in full vibration. And perhaps Simonov, who conducted this evening, did not have sufficient understanding of his young compatriot to avoid occasionally crushing him, during dynamic runs, with mass effects. We cannot, however, conclude from this that the National Orchestra of Belgium proved unworthy, as it put so much communicative enthusiasm into "Skazka", the symphonic poem of Rimsky-Korsakov, then in the Sixth Symphony of Shostakovich. Even more notable were the magnificent woodwind soloists, the clarinet of Ronald Van Spaendonck in particular.

Thursday, December 4, 2003 Meet the next great Russian pianist Former child prodigy Nikolai Lugansky lives 'inside of this music'
By Janelle Gelfand
The Cincinnati Enquirer
Nikolai Lugansky

He's just 31, but already Nikolai Lugansky is being called "the next one" in the line of great Russian pianists. Lugansky will make his Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra debut playing Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 4 this weekend. Modest and easy-going over the phone from his home in Moscow, the pianist says there was never a turning point when he knew music would be his life. "I became a concert pianist before I thought about it," says Lugansky. "When you study in (Moscow's) Central Music School and you're 7 years old, you've already played in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, one of the best halls of Russia. If you are good, you play more and more in other cities. Then, you play abroad. ... So it starts before a young man thinks what he wants to be. It became my life." Whether or not he plays in the style of legendary Russian pianists like Emil Gilels or Sviatoslav Richter - the latter one of his idols - is a moot point. Lugansky's recordings of Rachmaninoff and Chopin on the Erato label reveal an exciting technique - as well as sensitivity, color and transparency.
