A Brand New Star- Nativity Play: More details
Price £30.00 plus shipping
(Please see order form for details. )
Thank you for your interest in the Nativity Play "Brand New Star".It is a very simple short script with narration telling the traditional Christian Nativity story.
I have included page 1 of the script so you can get an idea! There are eight modern original songs, as listed below. Schools sometimes add their own selection of other traditional carols to produce a longer concert. Otherwise, the production is about 40 minutes in length. Last time I staged it in my own school it was performed by 85 children including choir, but it can be performed by a group as small as 15. (Cast List below)
The package contains script, CD, and basic sheet music. The CD contains two copies of each song, one with vocals for rehearsing, one "backing track" for performance. Therefore no musical ability is needed, but you will need a CD player and microphone for the most effective delivery. (Alternatively, some schools use their own pianist or organist etc.)

COMPOSERS
FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT
Born: October 22, 1811. Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886. Bayreuth, Germany
In his own words...

"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason... Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Hungarian pianist, composer and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form.
Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
Liszt was born in Hungary, where his father was in the employ of a wealthy family. His early talent in music was rewarded by the support of a group of Hungarian nobles who subsidized his studies in Paris. There he became part of an important circle of artists, writers and musicians that included

John Cage and Lejaren Hiller: HPSCHD
John Cage and Lejaren Hiller composed HPSCHD in the 1960s for 7 harpsichords playing computer-processed versions of music by Mozart and later composers, 51 tapes of computer-generated sounds, 6400 slide images, and 40 films projected on large screens throughout the performance space. The first performance was at the University of Illinois on May 16, 1969. The performance was five hours long and attended by more than 8000 people. HPSCHD is arguably the largest and wildest composition of the 20th century.
This presentation at the Chelsea Art Museum will use synthesizers instead of harpsichords and video and DVD projectors instead of slide and film projectors. It is, as artistic director Joel Chadabe puts it, "a new production of HPSCHD for the 21st century."
The synthesizer performances are by Robert Conant Anthony de Mare , and Joseph Kubera

Joseph Baermann Strauss was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, just ten years after the Civil War . Raised in an artistic family, Joseph loved poetry and hoped to pursue a career in the arts like his mother, a pianist, and his father, a painter and writer. Though he never became a fine artist, one day young Joseph would help create one of the most famous bridges in the world. An Inspiring Bridge
At the University of Cincinnati, Strauss developed lifelong interests. He continued writing poetry, but mostly studied commerce and economics. Standing five feet, three inches tall, Strauss struggled to overcome the limitations of his slight frame. After trying out for the football team, Strauss ended up recovering in the school infirmary, spending his time gazing out the window at the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge, America's first long-span suspension bridge. Strauss developed a deep fascination with bridges. Earnest, Determined, Ambitious
A tenacious campaigner, Strauss was selected by his peers as both class president and class poet. For his commencement address in 1892, Strauss penned a 21-stanza poem titled "Reveries," and presented his senior thesis, an outlandish proposal to construct an international railroad spanning the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia. Alfred K. Nippert, Strauss' fraternity brother, recalled, "Before a crowded house, a bewildered faculty, and a distinguished group of visitors and speakers, this modest, soft-spoken young graduate unfolded his Utopian dream." Though Strauss' plan was unorthodox, his earnestness won over the skeptical audience.

Seattle pianist/composer Bill Anschell attended Oberlin College and Wesleyan University, receiving a music degree from the latter in 1982. "While at Wesleyan, he studied privately with Bill Barron, composition; and T Ranganathon, South Indian rhythmic theory. He later spent three years in Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked with legendary bassist Richard Davis and was featured in an hour-long special over Wisconsin Public Radio. From 1989 to 2002 he lived in Atlanta, working extensively both as a bandleader and as a sideman for visiting and resident jazz artists. During that period his trio appeared in leading events across the Southeast, including the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the Atlanta Jazz Festival, and Piccolo Spoleto. In the fall of 1996, Anschell led the trio on an 18-concert tour of Central and South America. They returned in 1999 and 2001 for follow-up tours of Brazil, Peru and Paraguay.
From 1992 to 1996, Anschell worked extensively with vocalist Nnenna Freelon, serving as her musical director and pianist. In that capacity, Anschell performed in festivals and concert halls across the U.S. and throughout Europe. Among the group's many touring highlights were appearances at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Holland, the Nice Festival in France, the Monterrey Jazz Festival in California, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. Their performances were widely broadcast on radio and television including National Public Radio's "JazzSet," hosted by Branford Marsalis; Radio France; and French national television.

Joseph Schillinger
September 1,1995 marked the 100th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Schillinger. This great man was truly the Renaissance Man . . . a mathematician and pianist of the first rank who established music as a natural science. Schillinger was a true genius whose intellect germinated a magnificent system to explain how music works, what it is and how to make it. And make it they did! George Gershwin and Glenn Miller were two of the many fortunate ones who personally studied with him. Using patterns given to them by Schillinger, these artists gained fresh new ideas for their particular style. All exhibited their best work after studying with Schillinger. What was this magic? What was it that brought out the classic beauty of Summertime or the jazz great PEnnsylvania 6-5000? Considering the results of his students' work, clearly Schillinger's methods are far superior to any others known. Just who was Joseph Schillinger? What was this knowledge that Schillinger imparted? What was the spark of genius that made him unique? Let us take a brief look at his biography, then maybe we can understand. He came to America in 1928 and let us think a minute about what it was like then. There was no TV, no stereo, no color photography, silent movies; just one half the population as today, and prohibition was the law of the land. America was a rural, not urban society. Movies and radio unified the people . . . it was their media, it was their time. But then as now human nature was the same and people wanted a better life, better things, continued improvements, as it is our nature to try to attain perfection. They wanted their own music to express their world.

Love and politics by Vince Darcangelo Matthew Ryan is standing at the intersection of history, where music past and future culminate in the emotional refrains of his new CD, Regret Over the Wire. Literally, Ryan is in a Kansas City hotel room, brushing his teeth, musing on music, politics and his career in the middle of a successful tour with Gary Jules. "This is my fourth record, and I'm having more fun now than I ever did," says Ryan. "There's just more and more great audiences that seem to be looking for that community that only music can offer outside of politics and AA." Regret Over the Wire, Ryan's fourth disc, is his best-selling release to date. "It justifies why I need to do this on some level," he says. "You can't measure yourself by sales, but the human part of sales is the fact that there are people that are, at some level, sitting at home or driving around with your record and agreeing with what you have to say." What Ryan has to say is both sad and hopeful, mixing tales of heartbreak with sharp political commentary. The way Ryan sees it, there's not much difference. "I think everything is love and politics," he says.

Jazz pianist learned from the greats

Wilmington man has been part of music history By GARY SOULSMAN
While growing up on the East Side of Wilmington in the 1940s, Dean Jenkins was mentored by Clifford Brown, a young musician on his way to becoming one of the great bebop trumpeters. Later, Jenkins proved his own talent on piano, playing with performers such as trumpeter Lee Morgan and saxophonist Gene Ammons. It was as a jazz musician that Jenkins found his true calling in life. And in the off-hours he found a liking for heroin. Eventually, his habit led to a run-in with the law and a three-year sentence in the old New Castle County Workhouse. Jenkins made use of the time by humming tunes and writing them down.

April 13, 1940 Vanguard Classics OVC 8008 Most of us tend to think of chamber music as a sterile affair in which refined musicians gently amuse a staid group of corseted ladies and starched gentlemen amid lavish splendor. Pretty dull stuff. A few minutes of this disc should forever demolish such an absurd myth. This is, quite simply, one of the greatest concerts ever recorded. Blazing with passion, it ranks right up there with Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall, James Brown at the Apollo, the Allman Brothers at the Fillmore, or your own sweat-drenched favorite. As with most such events, its supreme quality arose from a unique confluence of forces, a single moment in time that would never recur. Joseph Szigeti, one of the most acclaimed violinists of the century, was a fervent advocate of modern music. Bela Bartok was not only an accomplished pianist but one of the most influential composers of his era. Both were life-long friends, allied by their ardent nationalism and anti-fascism, who emigrated to America. Szigeti came first. Bartok arrived on April 11, 1940. This recital two days later was their first in the New World.

Professor of Urology, Emeritus
"Had he been a soldier, he would have been General.
Had he been a politician, he would have been Senator.
Had he been a nobleman, he would be have been King." Joe Kaufman was the most distinguished urologist of his day. He was a complex, multifaceted individual, who was a brilliant physician and surgeon, a great teacher, and a personal inspiration to all who knew him. In any room of people operating room, lecture hall, athletic field, or social gathering his presence was the dominant one. He influenced the lives of thousands of patients, trainees, co-workers, and students during a UCLA career which spanned nearly 40 years. During those years, both UCLA and the specialty of urology changed from struggling start-ups into important forces. No individual did more to lead these transitions than Joe Kaufman. Joe was effective because of his innate leadership abilities, and also because he was a striking physical presence. Tall, dark, and handsome, he had a booming voice and a commanding demeanor. He was an extremely gifted communicator, clever and funny, both with the spoken and written word. In his many areas of endeavor, he exuded a self-confidence, which assured the best possible result. He was often called a "Renaissance Man" because he was talented in many different fields.
