"...I would hear a big luscious chord or orchestration on the radio or television that I liked. When I asked what it was I would always be told that jazz had something to do with it."
"I see music as a journey of one's own self-discovery and it can lead you down many roads."
"I believe that you make your own opportunities and in that regard, things have not changed significantly."
"There has been an increase in new and alternative outlets with broadcasting turning digital and the internet. It is a new frontier and the music and its purveyors will find their way."
ARTIST IN FOCUS:
JULIAN JOSEPH, PIANIST/COMPOSER Okay, so we are playing Jazz. So you've got to think fast.
It's music where you have to think on your toes.
So much of music is a challenge but to achieve the "JAZZ" in Jazz is the ultimate,
the hunger for Swing, the desire to move and be moved, the Blues. It's all there when it's Jazz. We practice going over and over the melodies, over and over the harmonies

The Long-Awaited Follow-Up to Fluffy Ruffle Girls . . . Virginia Eskin Plays Joseph Lamb "I used to have a theory that the rags written by women were superior to those of men, until I strolled into Joe Lamb. His rags are a lacy, laden with arching melodies, and finger-leasing as any the ladies wrote. There is a nostalgic turn of phrase in everything he touched, which has made his works very popular among pianist." Virginia Eskin American Beauties The

Eskin,
Piano When Virginia Eskin turned her lively classical skills to a collection of little-known rags by women (Northeastern's Fluffy Ruffle Girls, NOR CD 9003), the critics raved. Now she returns with a delightful collection of tunes, both widely-known and rare, by ragtime great Joseph Lamb. Joe Lamb (1887-1960) published many rags early in this century, then mostly abandoned commercial music until his rediscovery in the 1950's. But even during this hiatus he kept composing in his unique, almost-classical style. Today Lamb is considered one of the three most important composers of ragtime, along with Scott Joplin and James Scott.

By Matthew Clark
[Reprinted from the Oct, 1980 edition of
Keyboard Magazine

ACCORDIONISTS, IN ALL likelihood, do not suffer from persecution complexes more than any other group of normal citizens, but every now and then, when you hear one of them wondering in bewilderment why the accordion has not shaken its image as a cornball instrument, in the other-wise chic world of modern keyboards, you sense the frustration that many of this lot must occasionally feel, along with the humor that helps them cope with the situation. Take Joseph Macerollo, one of the most respected figures in the progressive fringe of the accordion community. On the liner notes to his album Interaccodinotesta, this internationally-acclaimed artist, this veteran of recitals and performances with a long list of contemporary chamber ensembles, was moved to write the lines that hang like a despairing cloud above. Seldom has a baseball metaphor been given such a glum application. Although he is known mainly for his work with contemporary music, Macerollo's heritage as an accordionist is in the conservative traditions of the instrument. Born in Guelph, Ontario, sixty miles west of Toronto, he was steered toward the accordion by his parents, who were eager for him to follow in the footsteps of his uncle, an accordion player specializing in wedding gigs for local Italian families. By the age of eleven, he was leading his own combo. "A friend of mine used to pick me up and literally put the accordion on my lap," Macerollo laughs. "I used to play for four hours almost nonstop at these weddings. I was one of those zombie players."

joseph E. Murray – Autobiography. the hours of study and hospital duty were long, life was The other lifetimes would be as a pianist, backwoodsman, tennis
http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1990/murray-autobio.html
I was born, as were my father and his parents, in Milford, Massachusetts, a town 30 miles southwest of Boston. My father's parents were of Southern Irish and English extraction. My mother was born in Providence, Rhode Island, soon after her parents had emigrated to the United States from Italy. Father was a lawyer and a District Court Judge, mother a school teacher. Both parents had benefited from and stressed the value of the educational opportunities this country offered. By example and precept they emphasized the need for service to others.
From earliest memory I wanted to be a surgeon, possibly influenced by the qualities of our family doctor who cared for our childhood ailments. As a second year high school chemistry student, I still have a vivid memory of my excitement when I first saw a chart of the periodic table of elements. The order in the universe seemed miraculous, and I wanted to study and learn as much as possible about the natural sciences.
I chose to attend a small liberal arts college, College of the Holy Cross , and concentrated on Latin, Greek, Philosophy and English. Assuming I'd receive ample science in medical school, I took the minimum of chemistry, physics and biology.

http://www.thunderstruck.org/pianist.htm
The Pianist: A Review By Will Johnson "The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness." Joseph Conrad (1911) The Holocaust was such an overwhelmingly horrific event that somehow it is hard to grasp and understand. Numbers and statistics do not do justice to this awful travesty, and does not capture the true scope of this incredible evil. It is easy to forget that the people who died had lives, hopes and dreams like every one of us. It is hard to fathom how normal people could treat others with such murderous hatred. The Pianist is the intimate portrait of the struggle of one man through this dark period in our history. Wladyslaw Szpilman, portrayed by Adrien Brody, was a talented and passionate Jewish musician in Warsaw, Poland. Based on this man's true story, Roman Polanski follows as this man survives through unspeakable and unimaginable terrors. He follows him into the depths of despair, depression and hopelessness. He leads us through the bloodshed, violence and unspeakable hatred. From 1939 until 1945. Szpilman sees everything he loves and holds dear stolen from him mercilessly. The tagline for this film is "Music was his passion. Survival was his masterpiece."

The Bach monogram (You can diagonally read J S B in it from the upper left to the lower right corner.) Introduction Well, this was an elaborate introduction to this article about Bach's Goldberg-Variations. It makes you feel humble. How difficult is it to capture Bach, and his music in words! A number of items which I am going to mention have been extensively descripted by others already, but it might be interesting for you as my reader to look closer to some things I discovered. I do hope this article can lead you to a better understanding of the work, that's why.
The time of Bach We go to Dresden, 1742. About 250 years ago, in the middle of the late baroque era. Society and religion are characterized by big contrasts: people live with full religious devotion on one side, but on the other hand we see a strong growing rationalism. In everyday life we see humility collide with the urge to develop the individual. There is a growing interest in science. The Ars Rhetorica is the base of many art disciplines, both in religious and secular areas. Big geniuses like Galileo, Kepler and Newton were busy laying the foundations of our modern astronomy, mechanics and physics. We look at the birth of the Encyclopedia Brittanica and for the first time see the development of precise scientific gadgets. Leibnitz and Newton worked on integral calculus, which formes a basis for our modern mathematics.Van Leeuwenhoek developed a microscope and observes protozoa. Clocks and time counting machines reach a very high level of perfection.

Reproduced by permission. One day in 1946, a young Los Angeles man named Joseph Rickard looked on in horror as an African-American mother and her daughter were turned away from a dance studio where they had sought ballet lessons for the little girl. The studio's instructor told them that blacks could not study classical dance and directed them to a tap-dance studio. The outraged Rickard, a Caucasian and himself a ballet dancer, vowed to do something about this injustice. Believing passionately that all who shared his love for dance should be able to enjoy it fully, he set about starting his own dance studio specifically for African-American students. In the years after World War II and on into the 1950's, African-Americans were beginning to make tentative steps into many areas of mainstream American life, including dance. By 1951, Janet Collins would become the first black premiere dancer in the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, and in 1954 the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo would accept its first black ballerina, Raven Wilkinson (whose acceptance was limited, however, since her fair skin induced most audiences to assume she was Caucasian). But, prior to the limited integration in the 1950's, African-American dancers had been barred altogether from major ballet studios. In the 1920's, when ballet was a young dance form in the United States, aspiring dancers of color had no choice but to study either in segregated settings or as private students of prominent white teachers willing to take them. By 1937 a black ballet company, the American Negro Ballet, debuted at the Lafayette Theatre in Harlem.

FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT Born: October 22, 1811, Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany
In his own words...
"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason...Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul."
Hungarian pianist, composer, and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form. Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
In 1848, Liszt abandoned his concert career to concentrate more on his composing. He took the post of court conductor to the Duke of Weimar, and it was here that he wrote or revised many of his most well-known pieces. Late in life he moved to Rome, taking minor orders there in 1865. Much of the rest of his life was taken up with composing religious music, although he kept up his career as a teacher and performer, dividing his time between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest.

Dr Joseph Ostroski recommends you know thyself... and thy medical history
Dr Joseph Ostroski by Sarah Reed Friday, May 21, 2004 With the spiritual soundness that differentiates Caymanians from the rest of the world, “know thyself” could very possibly be a comment made among young professional women in their business suits during conversation while they wait to cross the road in George Town. Or, it could easily be a comment made by a mother to daughter in lecture as they carry groceries back home. Instead, it is the 37-year motto of a man due to be honored with an Appreciation Award on Thursday from Cayman Islands Cancer Society because he understands and has grown to cherish Cayman’s people, and its way of life. Seventy-year-old Dr Joseph Ostroski sat behind his desk at his office in Doctor’s Hospital in Coral Gables, Florida and reveled in how fortunate he has been to have spent over three decades nurturing a very special relationship with the health care professionals and the people of the Cayman Islands. “My first awareness of the Cayman Islands was my introduction to a urologist, Burke Hunter, who worked very near my office in Miami,” remembers Dr Ostroski. “He was Caymanian and he brought me his cousin to treat.”

There are Christmas verses that can have a dozen of different melodies, varying considerably from region to region. The number of Christmas carols is surprisingly large even in world's proportions. Very old and valuable is the Dubrovnik Missal from 12th century, now kept in the Bodleian Library in Oxford. http://www.josephdiamond.com/barbadosreview.html
Night five of the Barbados Jazz Festival was opened by pianist Joseph Diamond. Accompanied by Leo Traversa on bass and Diego Lopez on drums, Diamond's smooth, easy listening tones and tunes were just the thing after a long day. Their music fit right in to the setting of the Heritage park, which complete with individual stalls offering tempting fare, was an ideal venue to perpetuate the festival-like atmosphere. It had the desired degree of intimacy, yet open enough to roam and listen at leisure. All those combined made for special moments for what has come to be a special event. Diamond, who said he started dreaming about Barbados a week before he got here, is patently in love with Barbados, its women and flying fish. He played tracks from his debut CD " Not Your Typical New Yorker" and if any of the music sounded familiar it was because it's featured on the cable television series "Sex in the City". He endeared himself to the Bajan audience, women in particular, when he dedicated "Bajan Beauty" to the island's beautiful women. That one had quite a few heads and shoulders shaking to the steady soca beat Lopez was generating. He did justice to the Caribbean beat. Lopez dropped it in the dance hall style, handling the one drop and Shango beats with equal aplomb. It is simply amazing what diversity of sound only eight notes can produce. Despite the dissimilarity in styles of Sonny Emory and Joseph Diamond, the contrasting sounds characterize the well established Barbados Jazz Festival.

    Why concertatore
Concertatore is a rather old-fashioned name for a conductor in an opera house. Typically and colloquially, Italians refer to the person who leads an orchestra as il direttore d’orchestra. The person who not only leads the performance but works on the conception and realization of a piece with singers, stage directors, choreographers, and just about anyone else involved, however, was historically il direttore d’orchestra e maestro concertatore . This is not to slight a direttore, mind you. That person may come in half-way through the season, for example, and do a large number of performances in outstanding fashion. But the most gratifying part is being that concertatore —pulling together diverse forces and leading that concerted effort in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.
