Smith's Orchestra was very successful from 1917 to 1921, reaching its peak popularity around 1919-1920, with the Victor Talking Machine Company issuing new Smith recordings almost every month. The labels on many Smith records have the phrase "for dancing" or "dance music." It recorded fox trots, one-steps, and waltzes, a few featuring a vocal refrain contributed by a Victor studio singer. Although musicians varied, generally eight instruments were used in the band, a combination of violin (Smith was a violinist), viola, piano, cello, trombone, cornet, drums. Smith's Orchestra began recording for the Victor Talking Machine Company on September 25, 1916. From this session came twelve-inch 35593 featuring Stewart James's "Songs of the Night" (the Victor Dance Orchestra is on the reverse side). It was issued in December 1916, and Victor's supplement for that month calls the orchestra "a new organization...popular with New York dancers." "Money Blues" was also recorded at this session but was held for a few months, and that session's take of a Cole Porter song went unissued. Two other performances recorded at this second session were issued on twelve-inch 35615: "Havanola" (also recorded by Prince's Band around this time for Columbia A5938 and by Jaudas' Band for Edison Blue Amberol 3298), and "Waltz from Drigo's Serenade." The disc was also issued in April, and Victor's supplement for that month gives "Havanola" the subtitle "Have Another," calling this "a very bright and cheerful number."

Meet the Artist... Mark Joseph Pianist Mark Joseph grew up in Sydney, Australia. At the age of five he was the youngest child ever accepted to the Conservatory of Music where he performed in concerts and won awards. He had originally planned to be a doctor, but soon realized music was his destiny. He received a Bachelor's degree in musical composition at the University of Sydney, and from then on, he began building an exciting career in what he was best at and loved most, composing music. Mark arrived in the United States in 1975 upon his acceptance to Berklee College of Music in Boston. He graduated from Berklee in two years Summa cum laude. Mark's career took a big leap in 1977 when he accepted a job writing and composing jingles for a company in Chicago. It was in Chicago that Mark met his future partner, Gary Klaff. Together, in 1979, they launched their own enormously successful company writing and composing jingles for nationally known companies. Their expertise was creating jingles for radio, TV, and business advertising. Some of their original musical creations were the McDonalds, Budweiser, Michelob, Pizza Hut, Mazda, Pontiac, Coors, and the Hoover Vacuum jingles. It doesn't stop there - Mark produced countless other jingles that included working with the Temptations, Frank Sinatra, the Neville Brothers, Lee Greenwood, Vince Gill, Jeff Baxter from the Doobie Brothers, and David Clayton Thomas from Blood Sweat and Tears.

Two of the main charities Dr. Long played concerts for were for Father Edison's Holy Spirit Parish in Pangarap Village, Tala, Kalookan City and the Diocese of Iligan and the St. Joseph the Patriarch Parish of Mabolo, Cebu City. The parishes in Kalookan City are very poor and can always use financial help. The proceeds from the benefit concerts Dr. Long performed for in VILLA SAN MIGUEL the Archbishop's Residence in Mandaluyong City, at San Carlos Seminary in Makati City, and CHRIST THE KING PARISH in Querzon City all were for the Parish of the Holy Spirit. These are all cities in the Manila region. The Concert at St. Joseph
the Patriarch Parish of Mabolo was for the Cebu area. Dr Long enjoyed hearing the mass at the Church of ANG MULING PAGKABUHAY NG ATING PANGINOON celebrated by Father Paul John Camiring. It was a treat to meet all the people she was trying to help and to sing for their large and active music ministry team! His parish is desperately in need of a new Keyboard!!...and a bigger church! Dr Long was deeply touched by the devotion of the people and the extreme poverty around them. Dr Long will continues her charity concerts for the people as opportunities arise. Alternative Text

DAN PINE Bulletin Staff Music lovers in the Bay Area have lost a local treasure. Sol Joseph, 90, longtime professor of music theory at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and former conductor of the Jewish Folk Chorus of San Francisco, died Dec. 3 after a long illness. "Sol was the sweetest and gentlest man," remembers Renee Enteen, who sang with the Jewish Folk Chorus when Joseph was the ensemble's conductor in the mid-1980s. "He was humble and soft, but a great musician." Born to Ukrainian immigrants in 1912, Joseph earned a master's degree in music from the University of Chicago in his hometown. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, staying on for a time in post-war Germany. In 1948, Joseph moved to San Francisco with his wife, Belle, and young son, Steven. Aided by the support of Bay Area classical music pioneers Maidie Bacon, Lillian Hodgehead and Ada Clement, Joseph joined the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory in 1948. There he taught theory, counterpoint, harmony and music literature. He also served as acting director and conductor of the Conservatory Orchestra until his retirement in 1977, when he was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree.

Piano
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Piano is a common abbreviation for pianoforte , a musical instrument with a keyboard (see keyboard instrument ). Its sound is produced by strings stretched on a rigid frame. These vibrate when struck by felt-covered hammers, which are activated by the keyboard. The word pianoforte is from the Italian for soft-loud , referring to the ability of the piano to play notes at many volumes. As a keyboard stringed instrument, the piano is similar to the clavichord and harpsichord . The three instruments differ in the mechanism of sound production. In a harpsichord, strings are plucked by quills or similar material. In the clavichord, strings are struck by tangents which remain in contact with the string. In a piano, the strings are struck by hammers which immediately rebound, leaving the string to vibrate freely.
