October 22 ~  The Artist's Destiny Liszt: Final Years
S o r r o w f u l and great is the artist's d e s t i n y ~ Franz Liszt Born on this day in Raiding, Hungary, composer Franciscus Liszt (1811-1886) was considered the greatest pianist of his time. Known for revolutionary interpretations and dramatic showmanship, the bravura musician invented the symphonic tone poem , and was the first to perform a solo recital. Bach is the foundation of piano playing, Liszt the summit," praised pianist Ferruccio Busoni. "The two make Beethoven possible." Pianist Felix Mendelssohn agreed that Liszt played with "a degree of virtuosity and complete finger independence and a thorough musical feeling that can scarcely be equaled." A child prodigy who studied with Mozart' s infamous friend Antonio Salieri, Liszt was a friend of writer Victor Hugo and inspired in 1831 by a passionate performance by Niccolo Paganini at the Paris Opera House. The violinist's brilliance consumed Liszt with the desire for musical showmanship and perfection "My mind and fingers have worked like the damned," wrote the gifted and charismatic Liszt in 1932. "Homer, the Bible

La Folia derives from a 16th century Portuguese dance which has attracted many composers, in particular those of the Baroque period, Correli and Vivaldi. Juta Aragonesa is also a dance, but it originates from the Spanish region, Aragon. These dances were no doubt the temptation for Busoni. His arrangement dated 1894, makes full use of these dance rhythms with percussive enhancements and harmonic embellishments. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Hans Swarowski enjoyed a successful career as both teacher and conductor. Swarowski himself was taught in Vienna by Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Richard Strauss in various capacities. He performed throughout Europe, conducting in major cities such as Prague, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Berlin and Zurich.

The Students of Liszt on Record and Reproducing Piano Roll
Twenty students of Franz Liszt are known to have made records, piano rolls, or both. Between them, these pianists left more than 300 performances on records, and an even larger number of reproducing piano rolls - one of the most extensive and thought-provoking links that exists to 19th-century piano performance practice. Availability is spotty, though. Some of these pianists have had their records substantially or completely reissued on CD; others have been little reissued, or not at all. (Only Rosenthal has had a high-quality reissue of his piano rolls.) Some rolls and records are almost certainly lost, such as Stavenhagen's one known recording. Even if the rolls survive, many were made for Hupfeld's virtually extinct Triphonola reproducing piano, including the rolls by Menter, Roth, and Schytte - three of the four eariest Liszt students to make piano rolls. Of course, the rolls could be translated into a digital medium, though there may not be anyone alive who's qualified, capable, and motivated to do this. Master List of Repertoire . This page contains all the repertoire on records by Liszt students, along with which pianist or pianists recorded each piece. I will not do this for piano rolls, unless many more become available for actual listening.

Franz Liszt by Alan Walker
Teachout, Terry
To say that Franz Liszt was the most famous pianist of the 19th century barely suggests the extent of his celebrity. Born in Hungary in 1811, he made his debut at the age of nine, met Beethoven three years later, and was known throughout Europe by the time he was thirteen. ...The "problem" posed by his music is that its Romantic rhetoric is as alien to modern sensibilities as, say, the poetry of Shelley... ...By contrast, Alan Walker's biography is a brief for the defense: it contends unequivocally that Liszt was both a great man and a great composer... ...t Fortunately, many early recordings of Liszt's music have been reissued on CD, among the most notable of which are Simon Barere's matchless 1934 performances of Reminiscences de Don Juan and the Rapsodie espagnole, both of which are part of Simon Barere: The Complete HMVRecordings, 1934-36 (Appian CDAPR 7001, two CD's... ...The world persisted to the end in calling him the greatest pianist," Saint-Saens once said, "in order to avoid the trouble of considering his claims as one of the most remarkable of composers... ...The word Liszt himself used to describe his playing was "transcendental...

A Romantic icon and one of the first proponents of the orchestral tone poem, Franz Liszt was an unparalleled keyboard virtuoso and a supremely talented and innovative composer. He was also renowned as a mercurial personality and bandit of love; in short, like the flamboyant violinist Niccolo Paganini, Liszt lived the Romantic ideal to the hilt.
He was born in Hungary in 1811, and began to study the piano at the age of six. He exhibited unusual talent on the instrument, and gave a number of successful concerts while still a child. After continuing his piano studies with the help of Hungarian nobility, he moved with his family to Vienna, where he studied with Carl Czerny and the now-infamous Antonio Salieri. He made more concert appearances, and audiences took to his passionate and technically immaculate playing. Next was Paris, where, at the age of 16, he decided to take up long-term residence.
Liszt is perhaps best-known, however, for his piano music, and much of it is utterly magnificent. His monumental one-movement Sonata in B minor (1853) is one of the masterpieces of instrumental solo music, along with his 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies; with No. 2 in C-sharp minor being the most widely known. His numerous tone poems, showpieces and smaller works for piano are brilliant examples of a restless, Romantic imagination, informed but quite removed from the rigor of Classical forms.

FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT Born: October 22, 1811, Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886, Bayreuth, Germany
In his own words...
"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason...Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul."
Hungarian pianist, composer, and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form. Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
In 1848, Liszt abandoned his concert career to concentrate more on his composing. He took the post of court conductor to the Duke of Weimar, and it was here that he wrote or revised many of his most well-known pieces. Late in life he moved to Rome, taking minor orders there in 1865. Much of the rest of his life was taken up with composing religious music, although he kept up his career as a teacher and performer, dividing his time between Rome, Weimar, and Budapest.

Franz Liszt
What Was Liszt's Technic Like? This question has been asked of me by students, teachers and other music lovers, with such frequency as to induce me to attempt an analytical description of Liszt's technic, although the tesk is one before which not "to falter would be sin." We usually mean by "technic" a well trained human playing apparatus, a well developed finger mechanism, supported by wrist or arm or both, as the case chances to require. We mean the "mechanical" side of music making; that side which has nothing to do with spirituality except to serve its purposes as an unquestioning underling. This technic can be acquired by any one that has a good drill master and teh requisite persistence in practicing, because it is "mechanical." If in the face of this definition of technic I should speak of such a thing as a "spiritual technic" I should run the risk of being laughed at, and yet - there is such a thing, as we shall presently see is a crude exemplification.
