Franz (sometimes Ferenc Liszt October 22 July 31 ) was a virtuoso pianist and composer , born in Raiding, Hungary Four ages of Franz Liszt Liszt studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his life toured throughout Europe giving concerts. Liszt was well respected as his virtuosity had been admired by composers and performers alike throughout Europe, especially for his exuberant piano transcriptions of both operas and famous symphonies of the time, reducing the cost of hearing such music. His great generosity with both money and time were also much appreciated. Born in Hungary, Liszt displayed incredible talent at a young age, easily sight-reading multiple staves at once. He got his first lessons from his father Adam Liszt, who worked at the court of count Esterházy . Franz' first piano teacher was Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), but his father couldn't pay the lessons any more. Local aristocrats noticed his talent and paid him a scholarship, so that he went with his family to Vienna . Due to this, Liszt never learned his native language of

As pianist, composer and personality, Franz Liszt (b.1811) strides across the whole of the nineteenth century and is seminal in his influence on the twentieth. Although Liszt was born along with the first generation of romantic composers (Berlioz, Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn), he outlived them all to become a friend of Wagner and proponent of the "music of the future." Franz Liszt was born in Hungary to a father who worked for the Esterhazy family, and who soon recognized his son's prodigious gifts. After studies with Czerny and Salieri in Vienna in 1821, Liszt quickly made a name as a piano virtuoso, performing in London and Paris. By fourteen, he had written Don Sanche, an operetta that was produced in Paris. Here he lived from 1823 to 1835, becoming friends with leading literary figures and painters as well as with Berlioz and Chopin. These two composers along with Paganini, who he heard with amazement in 1831, were the primary influences in forming Lizst's complex aesthetic character.

Nationality: Hungarian composer and pianist
He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini, whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer ("Années de pèlerinage"). To help raise funds for the Bonn Beethoven monument, he resumed the life of a travelling virtuoso (1839-47); he was adulated everywhere, from Ireland to Turkey, Portugal to Russia. In 1848 he took up a full-time conducting post at the Weimar court, where, living with the Princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, he wrote or revised most of the major works for which he is known, conducted new operas by Wagner, Berlioz and Verdi and, as the teacher of Hans von Bülow and others in the German avant-garde, became the figurehead of the "New German school." In 1861-9 he lived mainly in Rome, writing religious works (he took minor orders in 1865); from 1870 he journeyed regularly between Rome, Weimar and Budapest. He remained active as a teacher and performer to the end of his life.

During the 1840s, he performed superhuman feats at the piano, overwhelming the European public and impressing musicians as much as concertgoers. "Chopin wished that he could play his own piano etudes the way Liszt did. Schumann wrote that Liszt "enmeshed every member of the audience with his art and did with them as he willed." Brahms later said, "Whoever has not heard Liszt cannot speak of piano playing." "Liszt was born in Hungary; his father was an administrator for the Esterhazy family (which Haydn had also served). At age eleven, Liszt studied in Vienna, where he met Schubert and Beethoven; during his teens and twenties, he lived in Paris, a city where romanticism flourished and a mecca for virtuosos. When he was nineteen and already acclaimed, Liszt was awed by the great violinist Paganini, who drove audiences into a frenzy and was half suspected of being in league with the devil. Young Liszt was determined to become the Paganini of the piano. He withdrew from the concert stage for a few years, practiced from eight to twelve hours a day, and emerged as probably the greatest pianist of his time. "To display his incomparable mastery, Liszt composed his

Deutsche Grammophon 423 571-2 GH full price There aren't many composers who have left a legacy of pianism; compositionwise or in execution, that can match the one of Hungarian composer Franz (Ferenc) Liszt. He left a formidable bulk of works, consisting of compositions of his own as well as transcripions of works of predecessors and contemporary colleagues. The Beethoven symphonies and several of Schubert's lieder are examples of Liszt's great fascination for the piano as medium for the most diverse musical expressions. The composer-musician Franz Liszt was regarded as the greatest of all pianists of his time, which says quite a bit considering one of his most ardent admirers was friend, rival and colleague Frédéric Chopin: a most able pianist himself.
However it is as composer he has made his distinguished mark in music history. Franz Liszt is nothing less than one of the most original among composers, in his highly personal and experimental music. When one is confronted with the works of Liszt it becomes apparent that this man did not find the excisting musical conventions sufficiently developed or quite simply inadequate as frameworks for his compositions. Of the staggering amount of works he produced, only an extremely maginal number are written in the sonata form; two of which are presented here. Other composers naturally also have a fair portion of their opus, written in forms alternative to the sonata, but with Liszt this form is hardly ever in use, and when it is, it is always challenged.

Liszt studied and played at Vienna and Paris and for most of his life toured throughout Europe giving concerts. Liszt was well respected as the height of virtuosity and had been admired by composers and performers alike throughout Europe, especially for his exuberant piano transcriptions of both operas and famous symphonies of the time, reducing the cost of hearing such music. Born in Hungary, Liszt displayed incredible talent at a young age, easily sight-reading multiple staves at once. Eventually, his mother convinced the local aristocrats to send him to Vienna at the age of 3. Due to this, Liszt never learned his native language of Hungarian , which he deeply regretted later in his letters and diaries. In Paris, Liszt attended a concert by the virtuoso violinist Paganini and became motivated to become the greatest pianist of his day. He often took to seclusion in his room, and was heard practising for over 10 hours a day. In this period he wrote 12 etudes to capture the depth of his incredible talent, the most famous of which is "La Campanella", a study in octaves. He was said to have fraternized with such noted composers as

Franz Liszt
Liszt was the son of a steward in the service of the Esterházy family, patrons of Haydn. He was born in 1811 at Raiding in Hungary and moved as a child to Vienna, where he took piano lessons from Czerny and composition lessons from Salieri. Two years later, in 1823, he moved with his family to Paris, from where he toured widely as a pianist. Influenced by the phenomenal violinist Paganini, he turned his attention to the development of a similar technique as a pianist and in 1835 left Paris with his mistress, the Comtesse d'Agoult, with whom he traveled widely during the following years, as his reputation as a pianist of astonishing powers grew. In 1844 he separated from his mistress, the mother of his three children, and in 1848 settled in Weimar as Director of Music Extraordinary, accompanied by Princess Sayn-Wittgenstein and turning his attention now to composition and in particular to the creation of a new form, the symphonic poem. In 1861 Liszt moved to Rome, where he found expression for his long-held religious leanings. From 1869 he returned regularly to Weimar, where he had many pupils, and later he accepted similar obligations in Budapest, where he was regarded as a national hero.

Van 1823 tot 1836 woonde Liszt in Parijs, van waaruit hij verschillende tournees maakte; hij studeerde zelfstandig piano (methode Kalkbrenner ) en bestudeerde de theoretische vakken bij achtereenvolgens F. Liszt : Jill, this is not a rude question and I appreciate having you and your friends asking me questions. O.K., I am in quarantine because at this point in history (1847), Constantinople is still a "closed" country. In other words, it is extremely difficult to be able to travel to this exciting city, and one must deal with the official red tape and immigration rules that govern traveling here. Jill: Cool, I guess my next question is how you came to give some concerts here in the first place.
