Franz Liszt
Admittedly the greatest pianist in the annals of music, and a composer whose status in musical literature still forms a debatable question, b. at Raiding, Hungary, 22 October, 1811; d. at Bayreuth, Germany, 31 July, 1886. His musical precocity was early recognized by his parents, and his first teacher was his father, Adam Liszt, a musical amateur of rare culture. His first public appearance at Oedenburg at the age of nine was so startling a character, that several Hungarian magnates who were present at once assumed the financial responsibilities of his further musical education. Taken to Vienna by his father, who devoted himself exclusively to the development of his talented child, he studied the piano for six years with Czerny, and theory and composition with Salieri and Randhartinger. His first public appearance in Vienna (1 Jan., 1823) proved a noteworthy event in the annals of music. From Beethoven The result of this environment led to the unfortunate alliance (1834-44) with the Countess d'Agoult (Daniel Stern). The fruit of it was three children - a son who died early, Blandina, who became the wife of Emile Ollivier, Minister of Justice to Napoleon III Beethoven monument at Bonn (1845), are but two striking examples. Having reached the pinnacle of success and fame as a pianist, he now concluded to abandon the career of a virtuoso, to devote his time and energy to creative work and the public fostering of higher musical ideals.

FRANZ JOSEPH LISZT
Born: October 22, 1811. Raiding, Hungary
Died: July 31, 1886. Bayreuth, Germany
In his own words...

"Music embodies feeling without forcing it to contend and combine with thought, as it is forced in most arts and especially in the art of words. If music has one advantage over the other media through which a person can represent the impressions of the soul, it owes this to its supreme capacity to make each inner impulse audible without the assistance of reason... Music presents at once the intensity and the expression of feeling. It is the embodied and intelligible essence of feeling, capable of being apprehended by our senses. It permeates them like a dart, like a ray, like a mist, like a spirit, and fills our soul." Hungarian pianist, composer and conductor. Lizst was an innovator in his piano and orchestral works, and created new approaches to form.
Franz Liszt embodied all of the great ambitions of the Romantic era, and many of its contradictions. His life spanned three generations of Romantic composers. In his early life, he was an extravagant virtuoso, the darling of the ladies, and a creator of new and adventurous music. In his old age, he turned to the church, becoming a priest, writing sacred music, and championing the music of a new generation.
Liszt was born in Hungary, where his father was in the employ of a wealthy family. His early talent in music was rewarded by the support of a group of Hungarian nobles who subsidized his studies in Paris. There he became part of an important circle of artists, writers and musicians that included

Liszt, Franz Hungarian-born pianist and composer, founder of the solo piano recital and perhaps the greatest pianist of all time, as well as one of the important composers of the 19th century.
Liszt was born on October 22, 1811, in the village of Raiding, near Sopron. He studied the piano first with his father, then with the Austrian pianist Carl Czerny in Vienna, where he also studied theory with the Italian composer Antonio Salieri
Career
Residing in Paris for 12 years, Liszt knew many of the city's luminaries, including composers such as the French Hector Berlioz and the Polish-French and, among many literary acquaintances, the French novelist and poet Victor Hugo , the French poet Alphonse de Lamartine Heinrich Heine . His connections with Lamartine and Lamennais particularly influenced his career, as did the appearances in Paris, beginning in 1831, of the Italian violin virtuoso Richard Wagner
From 1839 to 1847 Liszt toured the Old World from Lisbon to Moscow and from Dublin to Istanbul. He rose to a fame surpassing that of Paganini. In 1847, however, he abandoned his career as a virtuoso, rarely playing in public again. The same year he met the Russian princess Carolyne Sayn-Wittgenstein, who remained his closest, most influential companion for the rest of his life. From 1848 to 1861 he was musical director at the grand ducal court at Weimar, giving performances of works by Berlioz, Wagner, and others, as well as his own.

Major Works:

Hungarian Rhapsodies, for piano (1846-1885)
symphonic poem (1848)
Listz was a prolific composer of symphonic works, chamber music, sacred and secular choral works, piano music, organ music, and songs. Listz also did musicians a great service by transcribing numerous great orchestral works for piano. These include Beethoven's symphonies 5, 6, and 7 and Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Other Information: Please note: Liszt's birthplace of Doborjan, Hungary is now known as Raiding, Austria. After World War I, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory and 60% of its population as the result of the Trianon Treaty of 1920. In a recent article, entitled "Bad Treaty That Won't Go Away," concert pianist Dr. Balint Vazsonyi wrote "Of Hungary's four greatest composers, all born in Hungary of course, only Zoltan Kodaly's birthplace remains [in Hungary]. On today's maps, it appears as if Franz Liszt had been born in Austria,Erno Dohnanyi in Slovakia, and Bela Bartok in Romania. On Bartok's birthday, the Hungarian delegation, wishing to lay a wreath, was turned back at the Romanian border." Many thanks to D.K. Bognar, editor of Hungarians in America

Detailed Information about Introduction (born Raiding, 22 October 1811; died Bayreuth, 31 July 1886). He was taught the piano by his father and then Czerny (Vienna, 1822-3), establishing himself as a remarkable concert artist by the age of 12. In Paris he studied theory and composition with Reicha and Paer; he wrote an opera and bravura piano pieces and undertook tours in France, Switzerland and England before ill-health and religious doubt made him reassess his career. Intellectual growth came through literature, and the urge to create through hearing opera and especially Paganini , whose spectacular effects Liszt eagerly transferred to the piano in original works and operatic fantasias. Meanwhile he gave lessons and began his stormy relationship (1833-44) with the (married) Countess Marie d'Agoult. They lived in Switzerland and Italy and had three children. He gave concerts in Paris, maintaining his legendary reputation, and published some essays, but was active chiefly as a composer (

Franz Liszt (1811 - 1886) Franz Liszt was a virtuoso pianist, composer and Romantic artist par excellence. Liszt is remembered today largely for his important contributions to piano technique and repertoire. Despite being remembered as mainly a pianist, Liszt actually spent a comparatively short period in his life as a touring concert artist. In his mid-30s he retired permanently from the concert stage and dedicated himself to composition and teaching. Under the guidance of his father, an amateur musician, the young Liszt toured Europe showing off his prodigious pianistic talent. A turning point came when Liszt, then in his early twenties, heard the virtuoso violinist Paganini perform. He decided that he would dedicate himself from then on to doing for the piano what Paganini did for the violin. After isolating himself in intense practice, he finally succeeded admirably in his goal, writing a number of works of hither-to unheard-of difficulty, many based on music by Paganini. Using his own compositions and virtuoso fantasies based on contemporary operas, Liszt took Europe, Russia and Turkey by storm as a soloist. After reaching the highest levels of society and being endorsed by royalty from every country, Liszt abruptly gave up the stressful life of a touring concert artist and settled down to pursue other artistic goals. This period in Liszt's life was a very fruitful one. He extensively revised many of his earlier works to give them more musical and poetic depth, and in the process often greatly reduced their technical demands. Liszt was a deeply philosophical man, and much of his musical work is inspired directly by the poets and writers he admired, including as Byron, Goethe, Lamartine and Senancour.

Liszt made his public debut when he was nineteen years old. Soon afterwards prince Esterhazy heard him and was much impressed. Funds were raised for a serious musical education and Liszt went to Vienna to study composition with Salieri and piano with Czerny. After two years he was set to pursue his studies at the conservatory in Paris, but Cherubini, then the director of that institution, refused to admit him because he was a foreigner. After a further private eduction he played at the houses of rich families and in 1824 he made his debut in London. He caused a sensation and soon played at Drury Lane and before George IV.
The experience of seeing him perform usually put his audiences in Paris in a state ecstasy and when in 1830 he met Paganini, Berlioz and Chopin, they inspired him to exploit his romantic spirit and to find his own style as a composer.
The duchess d'Agoult left her husband in 1833 to follow Liszt and their liaison resulted in three children: Blandine, Cosima and Daniel. They separated in 1839. Under her writer's name Daniel Stern, Marie D'Agoult published the novel "Nélida", relating her relationship with Liszt. He probably never forgave her for doing so. Among Liszt's many other affairs with women was the one with Lola Montez, ending in Liszt locking Montez into a hotel room and running away himself.
