Prague Chamber Orchestra
"Valentina Lisitsa, Piano; Sergei Nakariakov, Trumpet"
A litany of accolades in the American Press from the New York Times to the San Francisco Chronicle followed their twelfth North American tour last season. One American critic called the Prague Chamber Orchestra "a remarkably well-disciplined, excellent body of musicians in which each musician is a maestro." This world- renowned, 36-member ensemble begins its 1998 U.S. tour at The January Series with a repertoire ranging from baroque to today's leading composers. The Orchestra plays without a conductor, sustained instead by the superb musicianship of each player, unique in their exquisite precision, intonation, and balance. Two outstanding Russian soloists, the stunning pianist, Valentina Lisitsa, and the brilliant trumpeter, Sergei Nakariakov, complement this remarkable orchestra in its first appearance in West Michigan.

MADISON, WI — April 12, 2004 — The Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra is pleased to announce an exciting line-up of repertoire and guest artists for its 2004 Concerts on the Square® season and its 2004-05 indoor season, including the Masterworks series and Holiday Concerts.
Bob Sorge, WCO Executive Director, says, "I'm really pleased with the 2004-2005 season. It builds on the WCO's reputation for doing fresh and exciting repertoire. The season as a whole is very dynamic – with recitals in the middle of orchestral programs, unique instruments such as the basset clarinet, and wonderful repertoire that is both familiar and new. You won't find a season with the feeling of spontaneity that this one has anywhere else."
One of the most anticipated Concerts on the Square performances will be the July 28th concert featuring 16-year-old vocalist and rising star Hayley Westenra. Her newest CD, Pure, was released in the U.S. and Canada April 6th. Pure has already gone 10x platinum in New Zealand, making her the best-selling artist ever in the country’s history, and she is the fastest selling debut classical artist in the U.K., where the album debuted at #1 on the classical charts and #8 on the pop charts.

Dear Friends,
The fourth edition of our acclaimed Piano Series has it all: a recital by one of the most renowned pianists in the world today; a duo-piano program by two incandescent young artists who have rekindled an avid interest in this fascinating corner of the keyboard repertory; the San Diego recital debut of the young Ukrainian pianist whose SummerFest performance last August made an indelible impression; and last but certainly not least, an American piano legend whose concert appearances are eagerly awaited by both audiences and professional musicians around the globe. Emanuel Ax is surely one of the most highly regarded and in-demand pianists in the world. His performances of the great cornerstones of the solo keyboard repertory command the highest accolades, and his devotion to the towering classical masterworks is matched by a fervent dedication to performing new works by today's most important composers. Duo-pianists Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff are, quite simply, the hottest item on the current concert scene. Catapulted to international prominence by their blazing, competition-winning performance at the 1991 Dranoff Two-Piano competition in Miami, they have left audiences cheering for more in every city where they have played.

Dynamic Duo Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff Debut at Weill Recital Hall, Tuesday, December 17, 8 pm
New York, NY - The keyboard duo of Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff makes its Weill Recital Hall debut on Tuesday, December 17, at 8 pm. The husband and wife pair will exhibit its fiery pianism with two works by Schubert: in G minor for piano duet, Op. 54, and Fantasy in F minor for piano duet, Op. 103. Additionally, Ms. Lisitsa, who is making her Weill Recital Hall solo debut, will interpret 24 Chopin Etudes from Op. 10 and Op. 25.
Pianists Valentina Lisitsa and Alexei Kuznetsoff virtually exploded onto the American music scene in their formal United States debut in Chicago. This young piano-duo has garnered several competition prizes in its native Ukraine and continues to win critical acclaim in the United States as well. By the time Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff met at the Kiev Conservatory, they were both winners of numerous international, national, and local solo and chamber music competitions. They combined their talents and began working as a two-piano team with Ludmilla Tsvierko. In 1990, after only a few weeks of preparation, Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff captured first prize at the Ukrainian Chamber Music Competition. In 1991 the duo won first prize in the Third International Murray Dranoff Two Piano Competition. Shortly after their victory, Lisitsa and Kuznetsoff made their home in the United States and recently became American citizens.

DEBUSSY: Jeuxpoeme danse Six epigraphes antiques (Orch.
Ansermet)/DUKAS: La Peri; The Sorcerer's Apprentice /SAINT-SAENS: Danse macabre
Ernest Ansermet conducts Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Paris Conservatory Orchestra (Dukas)
Testament SBT 1324 69:02 (Distrib. Harmonia Mundi):
Vintage 1953-1955 performances led by Ernest Ansermet (1883-1969), mathematician and conductor extraordinaire, known for the chaste and self-effacing literalism of his style, which eschewed aggrandized subjectivity. Ansermet's reputation, somewhat like that of Munch and Inghelbrecht, lies mainly in French music, but his range was quite broad and embraced Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Bloch, Falla, Handel, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky. A strong similitude of taste and style exists between Ansermet and Igor Markevitch, although the latter tends to be more fiery in temperament. But I recall that one of Ansermet's last records for London Decca, his performance of the Lalo Scherzo, had my telephone ringing at WHRW-FM, where I broadcast it for the SUNY Binghamton station. At least two inscriptions included by Testament are noteworthy: La Peri, from 1955, is in sterling, stereo sound, and it has strong personality and lovely, arched phrasing. It omits the more famous fanfare, but the ballet proper is exalted Dukas. The Debussy ballet Jeux received its second commercial recording here under Ansermet, the first belonging to Vittorio de Sabata on RCA. This music, an interwoven rondo-burlesque, still mystifies even after ninety years of existence. Ansermet makes smooth logic of its elusive figures. More successful as melos are the six Ancient Epigraphs in Ansermet's own orchestration, vividly colored and nuanced, delicately rendered. The two popular pieces, The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Danse macabre, are certainly poised and balanced, perhaps a bit less neurotically effective than the Stokowski and Mitropoulos versions which provide more earthy electricity.
