Michael Christie leads the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra during a concert last year.
Classical connections Colorado Music Festival stresses communication and community in 27th year By Wes Blomster
June 22, 2003
As he approaches his third season as music director of the Colorado Music Festival, Michael Christie says that he is "encouraged by the possibilities and humbled by the reality" of the challenge that the 27-year-old program presents. A mere one year older than the festival, Christie was named maestro in the CMF's 25th anniversary season, when he was only 26. "It's a youthful program," he says, "and I saw immediately that the festival could become anything. Christie is well aware of the responsibility that came his way with the festival, founded by Giora Bernstein in 1977. In Bernstein's 24 years at the helm of this major summer classical music program, the CMF gained wide recognition. Bernstein was respected for his commitment both to the standard repertory and to modern and contemporary works. In several seasons the CMF received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for innovative programming. While the new maestro shares the founder's commitment, his programs clearly reflect the image of youth and experimentation that he brings to the program. Although eager to bring new dimensions to the experience of music, Christie stresses repeatedly that he will never program a work that the audience will not enjoy.

RAGTIME: The Musical

Music by Stephen Flaherty. Lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. 1996 Toronto Cast. Ted Sperling, cond.
RCA Victor 68629-2 (CD only). 1996. Jay David Saks, prod.; James P. Nichols, eng. DDD. TT: 62:07 In my full review of Ragtime , I called it my personal Recording of the Year, so I'd be less than consistent if I didn't also choose it as one of this year's R2D4s. The fact is, I still find Ragtime an exciting and at times profoundly moving work. Despite having listened to the CD at least a dozen times, I'm apt to find tears coming to my eyes during the reprise of "Wheels of a Dream" in the finale. Great performances from the large cast, and the recording, while multimiked/multitracked, is unusually fine-sounding. If your CD buying budget for this year allows for only one show-music recording (pity!), make it Ragtime OFFENBACH: Les Contes d'Hoffman (The Tales of Hoffman)

Several symphony patrons remarked on how well Cooper melded the precise and distinctive orchestra sounds with Lisitsa's piano playing. The pianist's deep musical understanding was noted by several symphony-goers Sunday afternoon. Frieda Owen of Parkersburg said Lisitsa combined the strength of a male pianist with the delicacy of a female pianist to present a dazzling performance. Symphony Society board member Susan Christopher of Vienna saw Lisitsa perform six years ago in Chicago. She believes the young pianist has gotten even better since then and put on an amazing show. The audience could easily follow the sad and joyous periods in the piece by her piano-playing style - sometimes forceful and slower at other times.

Valentina Lisitsa, concert pianist currently under management with CAMI
"I had heard of different similar organizations, but none of them had such generous and broad ideas for its members: organizing the annual Laureates Festival, awards and master classes, promotion and publicity for the promising ones. All of these things are so often promised, but so seldom seen. YAI has done it for me and therefore I consider that its future development is vital for the young musicians and for saving classical music. I would like to express my deepest thanks and gratitude for all that has been done for me by YAI. I shall always remember that."

Bright Star Season presents Prague Chamber Orchestra January 27
On January 27, the Viterbo College Bright Star Season will host the world-renowned Prague Chamber Orchestra, with a special appearance by noted pianist Valentina Lisitsa. The show promises to be one not soon forgotten.  “Each musician is a maestro,” heralded an American critic during the first North American tour of the Prague Chamber Orchestra Without Conductor (translation of its full Czech title). An ensemble of 36 musicians, the Orchestra plays without conductor, sustained instead by the superb musicianship of each player, and is renowned for its exquisite precision, intonation and balance. In rehearsal and performance, each individual contributes as an interpreter, similar to more intimate chamber music ensembles. The Orchestra’s repertoire ranges from Baroque to the twentieth century and often includes compositions of today’s leading and active composers. The New York Times characterized the Orchestra as a “marvelous precision instrument.” The Washington Post described the ensemble’s musical sound as “light, clear, perfectly articulated and fresh as a spring gust of wind.” Rome’s Il Giornale d’Italio wrote: “They demonstrated the highest form of artistic discipline, not blind and passive discipline to a conductor but an enlightened and conscious one.” After its successful tour in February of 1996 in the eastern part of North America, Prague Chamber Orchestra makes its eagerly awaited thirteenth North American Tour in 1997?98 season with the remarkable young Russian pianist Valentina Lisitsa and the acclaimed Russian trumpeter, Sergei Nakariakov.
