Bruce Adolphe's "name that composer" piano quiz Meet Jonathan Biss
PT Young Artist-in-Residence
Q: Welcome to PT, Jonathan! We've heard you on PT before through concert performances, but our PT listeners don't know much about you. Let's start with some basics... Where are you from? Where do you live now?
Biss:
I grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, home of Indiana University, where my parents both teach. I left when I was 17 to go to Curtis, in Philadelphia, and I've just recently moved to New York.
Q: Your parents are violinists Miriam Fried and Paul Biss. What prompted you to take up piano rather than the violin?
Biss:
Neither I nor anyone in my family has a convincing answer for this. I have an older brother who started playing the piano when I was 4, at which point I started agitating to play as well (it took my parents a couple of years to give in...) Now I sometimes wish I'd taken up a string instrument, although playing the piano means I now get to play chamber music with my parents, which is fun.
Q: With both your parents being classical musicians, you've obviously grown up listening to a lot of classical music. What are some of your childhood memories of this experience?

Dinu Lipatti
Dinu Lipatti March 19 December 2 ) was a Romanian pianist Lipatti was born in Bucharest into a musical family: his father was aviolinist, his mother a pianist, and his godfather was the composer GeorgeEnescu . He finished second at the 1934 Vienna International Piano Competition, which led to Alfred Cortot , who thought he should have won, resigning from the jury in protest. Lipatti subsequentlystudied under Cortot and Nadia Boulanger in Paris Lipatti's career was interrupted by World War II , and following the warhis performances were less frequent owing to the cancer which eventually killed him. Hedied in Geneva Despite a relatively short playing career, and a relatively small recorded legacy, Lipatti's is considered among the finestpianists of his time. He is particularly noted for his interpretations of Mozart and Chopin
Recordings
Everything Lipatti played was full of poetry and grace. Sadly there are few recordings of his performances, but all showoutstanding sensitivity and assurance. EMI 63038 opens with the Chopin Sonata no. 3 in b minor, opus 58, and includes music by Liszt , George Enesco, and the best Ravel Alborada del Gracioso ever captured on disc. Philips 456892 also contains most of thismaterial, along with the

Prin intermediul documentelor, fotografiilor si obiectelor ce i-au apartinut, donate muzeului de catre fratele pianistului, ambasadorul Valentin Lipatti, s-au ilustrat momentele unei cariere muzicale stralucite. Many well-known classical composers were able pianists themselves; for example, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Ludwig van Beethoven Franz Liszt Frederic Chopin ... Robert Schumann , and Sergei Rachmaninov were all virtuoso pianists. Some pianists have special preferences as to which composer's music they play. Most western forms of music can make use of the piano. Consequently, pianists have a wide variety of forms and styles to choose from, including jazz classical music , and all sorts of popular music Well-known or influential classical pianists:

Favorite Pianists
Below is a list of the pianists of the past and present (not many of the latter, regrettably) whom I admire the most.
Dinu Lipatti
This goes without saying. Investigate my archived Lipatti section on this site.
Alfred Cortot Clara Haskil
A wonderful pianist who had a liquid sound. She went unrecognized most of her life but for her last few years enjoyed a glowing international reputation.
Josef Hofmann Mischa Levitzki Ignaz Friedman
One of the true originals. Humongous sound and a fiery imagination make his Chopin and Liszt recordings particularly worthy of investigation.
Josef Lhevinne
Sadly, his complete commercial recordings fit on one CD. A marvel to listen to.
Solomon Artur Schnabel
Having made the first complete recording of Beethoven Sonatas, Schnabel was known as a Beethoven specialist but plays all the German and Viennese composers with marvelous clarity. His Waldstein Sonata is phenomenal.
William Kapell
Another pianist who died young, Kapell had a fiery temperament that suited the Khatchaturian Concerto that launched him to stardom. His Prokofiev Third Concerto is electric.
Earl Wild
One of the greatest pianists who somehow never got the reputation he deserved. He still plays marvelously well.

It is worth mentioning that the immense value of any unpublished Lipatti recordings cannot be translated into financial worth. It is possible that some collectors have continued to hold onto their prized possessions in the belief that they will one day be worth a fortune. The longer any recordings remain technically unrestored in private hands, the lower their commercial viability becomes. It is to be hoped that any such collectors will recognize that the value of these performances can only be measured by the effect that they can have on the musical public at large. Romanian-born pianist ANDA ANASTASESCU is founder and artistic director of the London Schubert Players chamber orchestra. She gave her first public performance at nine with works by Beethoven and Prokofiev, in the Dalles Hall, Bucharest, within a year of learning the piano. After graduating from the Bucharest Conservatoire, she studied in Paris and London and attended master-classes with Halina Czerny-Stefanska and Sergiu Celibidache. At St Germain-en-Laye, Paris, she was unanimously awarded first prize at the 1974 Claude Debussy Piano Competition presided over by the composer Georges Auric. Her international career spans four continents and her performances include concertos with the philharmonic orchestras of Romania and the former Soviet republics, the Salzburg Mozarteum Ensemble, the BBC Concert Orchestra, and the European Community Chamber Orchestra as well as orchestras in the Far East and the USA. She worked with such conductors as Pascal Tortelier, Sian Edwards, Barry Wordsworth, Victoria Zhadko and Lim Yau. Several of her overseas concerts have been promoted by the British Council. Broadcasts have included BBC Radio 2's Saturday Gala Night, live recitals and recordings for the French National Radio and live orchestral concerts for the Romanian National Radio and Television. In 1989, Anda Anastasescu founded the London Schubert Players chamber orchestra and, in 1991, she established in Romania the Constantin Silvestri International Festival and Concerto Competition for Young Musicians (patron Lord Menuhin) in memory of the celebrated Romanian-born British conductor and composer Constantin Silvestri. She is also president of the Silvestri International Foundation.

Recorded 1937 Dinu Lipatti (pianoforte) with Nadia Boulanger* (pianoforte). EMI Great Recordings of the Century CDM 5 67566 2 Crotchet The Chopin is one of the composer's richest works, but its teeming counter-melodies and its profusion of contrasting ideas, not to speak of its technical demands in a purely mechanical sense, often lead to confusion and have discouraged frequent performance. No one has justified (indeed removed) its complexities more than Lipatti. No one has found a more natural dialogue in the first movement between the divine impetuousness of the primary material and the melting loveliness of the secondary theme, and in the Largo his long singing lines and his delicate accompanying figures converse freely with one another. It seems a banal comment but when in the wild spin of the finale heavy chordal writing is set against filigree passage-work it really does seem impossible that only one person is playing. The Liszt is deeply poetic while respecting the more extrovert character of the composer and the duets with Nadia Boulanger must be some of the most upbeat Brahms ever recorded, yet with no sacrifice of their deeply romantic nature. A black mark to EMI here for, firstly, giving the whole set only one track and, worse, for listing them numerically instead of in the order in which they are played (the above is correct, with no.6 played both at the beginning and at the end). Seldom has a fringe work like the Enescu had a performance which has revealed such a range of colour and clarity of utterance in it.
