Jenny Choi and The Third Shift http://www.jennychoi.com
“Grounded in the confessional singer-songwriter aesthetic—particularly the contemporary blood-on-the-drapes style of Tori Amos and Fiona Apple—Choi applies the results of countless hours of music lessons to jazzy piano-based arrangements that display both taste and grace. And her two sprightly punk numbers are an energizing surprise… Choi’s also a striking lyricist… though the words are often cutting, Choi and her mates make music that soothes.”

8 June 2002 - Finding myself in North Carolina, I tried to contact a friend or two. I got through to Judy Tseng. I knew her years ago from the internet and from her years in DC.
She invited me to a social gathering of the Raleigh-Durham chapter of NAAAP (Nat'l. Ass'n. of Asian American Professionals), of which she's (chapter) president.
Judy and her husband, Andrew Chin (?), do an Asian American show for a local community access cable tv channel. (Either Channel 8 (Durham) or 10 (Raleigh), or maybe both.) The program is called, "Asian Focus." And they interviewed me about this, here, website (AAMP!itude) for their show. I'm afraid I didn't look that good on camera, from what little playback I saw. (So you potential viewers out there, consider yourselves to have been warned!) Although, I imagine it will be repeated over the course of the ensuing months (probably at unusual hours), so viewers might be able to get used to my odd screen presence. (That is, if Judy and Andrew decide to use the material.) And afterwards, we all watched part of the Stanley Cup hockey game between the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes (being played at ESA in Raleigh). 15 June - There was a free concert tonight by singer/songwriter Tom Prasada-Rao at a local outdoor amphitheater (in Catonsville, MD), so I decided to take advantage of it. I've known about him for several years, but this was my first time seeing him onstage.

    MUSIC
Music reviews: John Michael Montgomery, The Duke Robillard Band, Jenny Lin, Rachel Z Trio
October 8, 2000 COUNTRY John Michael Montgomery "Brand New Me" (Atlantic) Brand-new stuff? Not really. Montgomery sticks mostly to the mix of contemporary country and twangy pop that made him a star in the early '90s. There's a life-affirming anthem ("Brand New Me"), a barroom rocker ("That's What I Like About You") and, of course, a big love ballad ("Even Then.") The only thing that's different and we don't mean different in a good way is "The Little Girl," already at No. 5 on the country singles chart. This weeper about a child who endures the murder-suicide of her drug- and alcohol-abusing parents is a little too reminiscent of those maudlin story songs that tarnished country music's image back in the '60s. Otherwise, this is mostly serviceable, mostly radio-ready fare. It's not bad, but there's nothing here to rival "Life's a Dance" or "I Swear." By Greg Crawford, Free Press staff writer BLUES The Duke Robillard Band "Explorer" (Shanachie) In founding Roomful of Blues a band that never received proper credit for jump-starting the jump-blues craze then replacing Jimmie Vaughan in the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Duke Robillard proved nothing if not adaptable.

"I'm gonna have a moment to think," she said, before launching into her song. "I'm selfish, I do it for myself," Jennifer said of her piano-playing. "I like listening to myself play and also comparing myself to others and trying to perfect what I'm doing to better myself. That's something that is actually, like, driving you." Family Crucial to Success "I wonder all the time where it comes from, but I don't know if it's discoverable," said Joseph Polisi, president of the Juilliard School, which teaches some of the great young artists. When asked why so many of these young artists are Asian, Polisi said: "I think that mix currently of family, tradition and respect for a type of genre of music certainly does exist in China, Japan and Taiwan, Korea of course. That's a tradition we see less in America today."

A Bright Future Recently, Jennifer placed first among pianists her age in Southern California. She thinks she wants it for a life. "There are several paths," she said, "and I've kind of chosen the piano path already, but there are still other paths I can take." Many young stars flame out before they grow up. The pressure of practice and performance is sometimes too much. Others have everything it takes, including inner strength. "Music is something that I believe is given to us from God, and it's something that we should really appreciate it," Jennifer said. "And I enjoy music because I'm able to actually create it. And I can make my parents happy, I can make myself happy and I can touch other people, I hope."

WGUC's 40th Anniversary Gala It takes a big event to celebrate a big event, so WGUC pulled out all the stops for its 40th Anniversary Gala. On Sunday, October 1, we presented a Gala Dinner and Concert in the Omni Netherland Plaza's Hall of Mirrors. Persons from WGUC's past and present came together to honor past accomplishments, renew old friendships and celebrate the station's future. The exciting evening included dinner and a private concert featuring internationally acclaimed musicians Cho Liang Lin and André-Michel Schub. Lin and Schub's duo violin/piano recitals have long captivated audiences around the world. André-Michel Schub has been described by the New York Times as "pianistically flawless... a formidable pianist with a fierce integrity." Mr. Schub's career is a distinguished one, having performed with the world's most prestigious orchestras and conductors. Mr. Schub was the 1974 winner of the Naumberg International Piano Competition, 1977 recipient of the Avery Fischer Recital Award and 1981 Grand Prize Winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He continues to tour annually in duo-recital with Cho-Liang Lin. Grammy Award-winner Cho-Liang Lin, "Jimmy" to his American friends, was named 2000 Instrumentalist of the Year by Musical America. He has been recognized for 20-odd years as a remarkably sweet-toned and persuasive violinist. Since winning the Julliard Violin Competition and the Queen Sofia International Violin Competition in Madrid at age 17, Jimmy Lin has maintained a high-speed concert life, playing with every major orchestra and under the world's most distinguished conductors. Not to rest on his laurels, however, Lin started an international chamber music festival in his native Taiwan in 1997.

BUENA PARK, CA (March 26, 2004)—"An exciting young talent who wants to touch the world." That's how ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings described 14-year-old Californian Jennifer Lin on March 5, when he introduced her as the program's " Person of the Week ." There were stars in the audience and more on the stage, but 14-year-old Yamaha music student Jennifer Lin was the one who took their breath away at TED 2004. Lin, an accomplished pianist and composer, has been a student of the Yamaha Music Education System (YMES) since age 5 and is well-known in Yamaha circles as one of the outstanding students in the Junior Original Concert program. Her emergence into wider fame this month came about when she addressed the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference in Monterey, CA on February 27. TED, founded in 1984, is an energetic annual gathering of minds and ideas. Highlights of previous TED conferences have included early demonstrations of the Macintosh computer, the Sony compact disc, fractal geometry and the groundbreaking 2001 animated film
