Feinstein, Michael (b. 1956)
page: American pianist and singer Michael Feinstein has had a lifelong fascination with the popular music of the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s. He cites Al Jolson and Bing Crosby as his earliest musical influences, but among the most important were George and Ira Gershwin. An avid collector of their recordings since he was a boy, Feinstein became an archivist for Ira Gershwin, in which capacity he was able to study rare recordings and unpublished material by the Gershwins. A popular performer in clubs and on the concert tour, Feinstein has also put out twenty albums, two of which were nominated for Grammy awards. Sponsor Message.
Feinstein was born in Columbus, Ohio"not exactly a hotbed of musical activity, especially for . . . show music," as he admitson September 7, 1956, already well after the heyday of the songwriters that he would come to admire. Music was a part of Feinstein's life from his earliest days. His father, Edward Feinstein, a meat salesman by trade, was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America and took his young son along to the meetings. His mother, Florence Mae Cohen Feinstein, an amateur tap dancer, shared his father's "great passion for music," according to Feinstein.

Raconteur, TV personality, concert pianist, self-described "verbal vampire" and sometime supporting player in films. Levant had originally planned a career as a concert pianist but, after playing in dance bands and becoming George Gershwin's protege, he devoted himself to interpreting the composer's works and, utilizing his own eccentric personality, played character parts or more accurately variations on his own character in films. He did, however, enjoy considerable success as a concert pianist and, at one point in the 1940s, was the highest paid concert artist in the US. More...

Oscar Levant is remembered chiefly for two things: his recordings of classical piano musicparticularly the works of his friend George Gershwinand his appearances as a lovably neurotic sidekick in several movies, among which the musicals An American in Paris and The Band Wagon are probably the best known. ...By the 1980's, the comic mode to which Levant gave impetus, and whose practitioners ranged from Lenny Bruce to Woody Allen, had degenerated into self-indulgence and belligerence... ...By the early 50's, both Levant's career and his life were beginning to fall apart... ...The authors make out Levant's life to be a painful, futile struggle of talent with selfdestructiveness, with the latter ultimately winning out... ...A strange kind of insecurity indeed... ...Encapsulating and recasting his experiences in book form in The Memoirs of an Amnesiac and The Unimportance of Being Oscar, Levant managed to hit the best-seller list twice again in his final creative brushes with fame... ...SUCH is the basic outline of a rich, complex, and truly surprising life, told well by the husband-and-wife team of Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger...

By John Ardoin T o celebrate the 100th anniversary of Gershwin's birth in September, 1998, Carnegie Hall opened a remarkable exhibition of memorabilia of the Gershwin brothers George and Ira in its Rose Museum. (The exhibition runs through October 4, 1998, and is open daily from 11:00 am to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays. Admission is free. For further information, call 212-903-9629.) The show's title, "Nice Work If You Can Get It," was borrowed from one of the brothers' best-known songs, and, as the catalogue published by Carnegie Hall observes, the two men were opposites in personality, lifestyle, and creative pursuits: "George and his brother Ira represent a unique and perhaps the most successful collaboration in American music. George the composer and pianist, with his musical ability, charismatic personality, energy and ambitious drive, became internationally famous while still in his early twenties and died tragically at the age of thirty-eight.

He was born on December 27 to a musical family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania . Levant moved to New York with his mother in after the death of his father. He began studying under Zygmunt Stojowski, a well established piano pedagogue. In 1928 Levant traveled to Hollywood, California where his career turned for the better. During his stay, he met and befriended George Gershwin , Around Levant began composing on a serious note. This led to a request by Aaron Copland to play at the Yaddo Festival of contemporary American music on April 30 of that year. Successful, Levant began on a new orchestral work, Sinfonietta . During the years of and , Oscar Levant syndicated his own talk show, The Oscar Levant Show . The show was highly controversial, finally being taken from the air after a comment in regards to Marilyn Monroe ; 'Now that Marilyn Monroe is kosher, Arthur Miller can eat her.' He later refuted he "hadn't meant it THAT way." Several months later, the show was rebroadcasted in a slightly revised format. The show was now taped to use as a buffer to Oscar's antics.
