From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Oscar Levant , born December 27 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania - died August 14 , was a pianist and an actor , better known for his character than his music Born into a musical family, Levant moved to New York with his mother in after the death of his father. He began studying under Zygmunt Stojowski , a well established piano pedagogue. In 1928 Levant traveled to Hollywood where his career turned for the better. During his stay, he met and befriended George Gershwin Around Levant began composing on a serious note. This led to a request by Aaron Copland to play at the Yaddo Festival of contemporary American music on April 30 of that year. Successful, Levant began on a new orchestral work, Sinfonietta During the years of and , Oscar Levant syndicated his own talk show, The Oscar Levant Show . The show was highly controversial, finally being taken from the air after a comment in regards to Marilyn Monroe ; 'Now that Marilyn Monroe is kosher, Arthur Miller can eat her.' He later refuted he "hadn't meant it THAT way." Several months later, the show was rebroadcasted in a slightly revised format. The show was now taped to use as a buffer to Oscar's antics. This however, failed to prevent Oscar from making some comments of Mae West 's sex life, cancelling the show for good.

Oscar Levant
Born Dec 27 1906
Died Aug 14 1972
Oscar Levant had a unique career. To quote an essay by Dixie Burge, Oscar Levant flourished as (and subsequently gave up each, one by one) gifted composer, concert pianist, radio personality, movie star, successful recording artist, best-selling author, talk-show host and quiz show panellist
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s Levant composed and performed an eclectic range of popular and classical music. One bizarre highlight was the composition of a 15 minute opera, for, all of things, a Charlie Chan film. Well, to be fair, it was Charlie Chan at the Opera
A minor entry in the catalogue was the score for the Ginger Rogers movie In Person in 1935. This was his only work with Dorothy Fields who wrote the lyrics for three Levant melodies. All three songs are currently available on recordings by Bobby Short, Peter Mintun and Kay Thompson.

The American Composers Orchestra begins its Millennium celebration with the first of its "20th Century Snapshots" series at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, January 10, 1999 at 3 pm. Conductor Dennis Russell Davies leads an unusual program four important American pianists in four works for piano and orchestra. The concert, entitled The Gershwin Circle, focuses on the international impact of George Gershwin and his music and features Leon Bates, Scott Dunn, Alan Feinberg, and Ursula Oppens, in music by Oscar Levant, Vernon Duke, Maurice Ravel, and, of course, Gershwin.

The Gershwin Circle
by Carol J. Oja With the composers brought together in "The Gershwin Circle," a fresh perspective emerges on Gershwin's impact. Oscar Levant and Vernon Duke (aka Vladimir Dukelsky) both spun within Gershwin's orbit–Duke as a fellow composer of popular songs, also as a collaborator with George's brother Ira, and Levant as Gershwin's amanuensis and foremost interpreter at the piano. Focus has most often been placed on Gershwin's impact on his American modernist contemporaries, whether Aaron Copland in the Piano Concerto or George Antheil in his Jazz Symphony. These figures identified primarily with the concert hall. To incorporate jazz, they reached down from an artistic position of accepted authority to elevate an idiom they regarded with varying degrees of condescension. The real change for Levant as composer came in 1935, when he began studying with Arnold Schoenberg in Los Angeles. At the same time, Levant was writing tunes for films produced by the Fox and RKO studios. Schoenberg's appointment books, as recounted in Sam Kashner and Nancy Schonberger's illuminating book, A Talent for Genius: The Life and Times of Oscar Levant, show that Levant worked with Schoenberg from April through September 1935 and again from October 1936 through November 1937. During this period, Levant wrote the piano concerto featured here, as well as a string quartet and Nocturne for orchestra. Levant's Piano Concerto embodies these contradictory forces–the blues-based harmonies and pulsating rhythms of Gershwin and the atonality of Schoenberg. Levant himself called the work an "exercise in relentless atonality," but it ranges much wider than that, even including a "boogie woogie" passage, as Levant termed it. It sounds like Gershwin in an acid bath.

"A Smattering of Ignorance," "The Unimportance of Being Oscar" and "The Memoirs of an Amnesiac" are all the testimony of a man who was the victim of his own genius. Oscar Levant was born on December 27, 1906 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the son of a repairman. Beginning at age 16 with a move to New York, Levant embarked on a journey towards self-expression as a concert pianist, teacher, bandleader and composer - all before reaching his 20th birthday. As an artist, Oscar Levant was comparable to King Midas in that all that he touched - music, film, and literature - turned to gold. As a man, however, Levant lived in and succumbed to his own tortured mind.

by Sam Kashner In developing his musical talent during the late '20s and '30s, Oscar Levant studied under such masters as Stojowski, Schoenberg and Schillinger. He would then become a best friend, protégé and world-renowned interpreter of George Gershwin. Most memorable of his Gershwin idolatry is An American in Paris (1951), where Levant plays every member of the orchestra in a performance of Gershwin's "Concerto in F."
