21. Talkin' Broadway Regional News & Reviews - "Come Fly With Me: The Songs & Storie
The veteran Avery Sommers (she replaced Nell carter on Broadway in Ain praise cannotbe given to the brilliant pianistmusical director Michael larsen.

An Evening with Sammy Cahn: It’s Almost Magic will be providing delightful don’t miss entertainment for lovers of The Great American Songbook through May 16 at Metuchen’s Forum Theatre. Sammy Cahn made a memorable 1972 appearance during the legendary early years of the Lyrics and Lyricists series at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y abetted by three singers and a pianist. The evening was so special that in 1974, with only the slightest of modifications, he brought his presentation to Broadway under the title Words and Music , where it was a critically acclaimed success. In subsequent years, he performed the show in London and on tour. The presentation written in its entirety by Cahn was an exceedingly fine work of popular art, but it is doubtful that many thought of it as anything more than a richly entertaining concert style entertainment by the extremely clever lyricist. With Cahn’s passing in 1993, I would not have expected to ever see it again. However, to our great good fortune, someone came up with the idea that the work could be revived with an actor performing the role of Sammy Cahn. And so, bedecked with a new title, it is now providing New Jersey audiences with one of the most delightfully entertaining evenings of the theatre season. If it is an evening of the “...and then I wrote” variety, and I’m not ready to concede that it is, it transcends the limitations of the genre. When seen with an actor portraying Cahn, it feels more like the one man plays celebrating such writers as Mark Twain and Charles Dickens which have enriched our stages for so many years. Unerringly, Cahn was able to organize the stories and observations which made him a terrific raconteur to fit what has proven to be an ideal format for a humorous autobiographical musical play which deserves to become part of our stage literature.

Artists Catalogue Tours ... About ECM Subtitled "sort-of-an-opera", The School of Understanding was conceived originally as a multi-media work integrating vocal and instrumental music, video projections of images and text, lighting design geared to musical content and stage environments for the performers. The School of Languages - as the work was intially titled- was premiered on August 31 and September 1, 1996 at Copenhagen's Museum of Modern Art, and subsequently recorded in the Danish Radio Studio for CD release. It is, arguably, Michael Mantler's most ambitious undertaking to date. The composer writes: "The fundamental theme of the work is 'understanding' - communicating literally through words and languages, and in particular recognizing and considering certain problems in today's society. The contextual framework is a language school where the Students participate in a multi-lingual conversation course led by the Teacher. After the Students have introduced themselves, some basic language study takes place. The principal common language is English, with key words, phrases and simple concepts being presented in several other langugaes (Danish, French, German, Italian, Spanish) in the song texts. The language is deliberately unpretentious everyday speech. The course then proceeds to its more advanced conversation stage. News reports of events are discussed, commented on, some personal stories are related by students, questions are raised and observations are made, but generally no answers are given.

    SOMETHING DOING
    DECEMBER 2000 NUMBER 56
Rose Leaf Ragtime Club November Meeting (11/26/2000)
    Reported by Gary Rametta
    Hello once again!
The swell of new guests came no doubt as a result of Ryan Carter's front-page article in the San Gabriel Valley section of the Los Angeles Times. That article appeared the Thursday following our October meeting. Ryan did a great job capturing the spirit and goings-on of that afternoon's activities in his report. Pictured prominently along with the report were Ruby Fradkin, our 10-year old Wunderkind, and Phil Cannon, a recent devotee who picks classic rags with his guitar-banjo.
Gary Rametta opened up the afternoon's show at 2:30 sharp, starting out with Charles Hunter's "Tickled to Death," a fun and bouncy Tennessee folk rag that develops its ragtime feel within a variation of the march form. Gary's next piece was a new one; Joseph Lamb's posthumously-published "Firefly Rag." This is a lovely, lush piece with a nocturnal ambience. To close his set, Gary then performed Scott Joplin's "Gladiolus Rag," one of the jewels of classic ragtime.
Messrs. George McClellan and Lee Roan immediately spiced things up with duet versions of three popular tunes from the early 20th century. First was "Smiles," written in 1917 by Lee Roberts. Next was "The Little Red Barn," a 1934 composition by Joe Young. Last was "Louisville Lou" a Milton Hager tune from 1923. The gents are always enjoyable to hear, and their sheet music collection must be encyclopedic.

    From Dr. David Lynch
We have just finished the Year of Music! Each of the great events of this year has seemed greater than the one before. It has been a fantastic, unbelievable year. The Kurt Weill Festival took place during the terrible week of September 11. I cannot tell you how proud I am of our students, real troupers who performed two full evenings of Kurt Weill songs (a German one and an English one), in spectacular fashion. They dealt with national disaster by dedicating themselves to this positive endeavor. As Beth Carter said so eloquently, our music seemed the only thing that week that did actually make sense. Guest lecturer Susan Borwick framed the whole thing amazingly with a presentation which tied Weill and his times to our own trauma: when can music express the inexpressible? Guest clinicians Patty Martin and Dirk Weiler provided great guidance and inspiration to our student performers. In October, composer Alice Parker was in residence to work with the Meredith choral groups, who joined the Raleigh Oratorio Society in a concert of Ms. Parker’s works. It was truly inspirational to watch Ms. Parker work with the choirs and interact with students and faculty. Once again, we saw proof of the fact that great artists are often also some of the kindest, most giving persons in the world. (And she loved our choirs!)

    Maurice Ohana

by David Salvage Whenever I mention Maurice Ohana ’s name to fellow composers or musicians, I learn they either haven’t heard any of his music or haven’t heard of him altogether. The utter lack of attention paid to this great French master in the United States must rank as one of the more significant scandals in contemporary music, and a retrospective of his work here is long, long overdue. In the meantime, Naive’s recently released 2-CD set of Ohana’s choral music (#782171) offers a good opportunity to get to know this overlooked (and absolutely first-rate) composer. Ohana’s cultural roots are as complex as his music is eclectic. Born in French Morocco to parents of Spanish/English decent, Ohana remained a British citizen until 1976 despite living in France for most of his life. In 1932 he left for Paris to study architecture but soon abandoned his studies to pursue a career as a pianist. While studying at the Schola Cantorum, he began to turn his attention to composition, and, after service in the British army during World War II, he turned to writing music full-time. In 1947 he founded a composers circle called the “Groupe Zodiac” which foreswore all aesthetic dogma. Even though the group had dissolved by the early 1950s, Ohana’s adversity to aesthetic programs and agendas left him on the margins of French musical culture for the rest of his life. (In France, to not be affiliated with Boulez and IRCAM is to go against the grain of the establishment.)

David Del Tredici's "Gay Life: A Cycle of Six Songs for Amplified Baritone Solo and Orchestra," which was commissioned by the San Francisco Symphony, gets its world premiere Thursday through Saturday at Davies Symphony Hall, with Michael Tilson Thomas conducting and baritone William Sharp the vocal soloist. The six songs of ``Gay Life'' chronicle the joys and sorrows of contemporary life from the point of view of a gay man. The composer incorporated the texts of such poets as Allen Ginsberg, Paul Monette and Thom Gunn in his multifaceted work. ``It's a big piece, 45 minutes, and all the songs are connected,'' del Tredici, told the San Jose Mercury-News . ``It celebrates gay life, beginning in a happier mode and going through the various stages of being a gay man finding a partner, losing a partner to AIDS, then, at the end, a meditation remembering what is wonderful and finding a kind of peace.'' Del Tredici, who now lives in New York, was born and raised in California and graduated from the University of California-Berkeley in 1959. He began his musical career in 1955, when he appeared as an 18-year-old piano soloist with the S.F. Symphony, performing Saint-Saens' Piano Concerto in G minor
