With a background as a young American pianist in Europe, Carter Larsen has taken the music world by storm. He made his name conducting and performing over 400 concerts to electrifying public and critical acclaim, performing with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra as soloist, with television appearances and broadcasts on BBC television, and Europe's largest FM stations. In particular, his interpretations of rare works by composers Liszt, Grieg, Rachmaninoff and Saint-Saens made a significant contribution to the Romantic Revival and won him great acclaim from both audiences and critics alike.
Larsen established himself as a serious composer premiering four original compositions alongside the classics, which were broadcast on Classic FM's prestigious "Platform Live" from the UK. He became a favorite to regular audiences of 17,000 at London's popular Kenwood Concerts.

As composer, the excitement generated by Carter Larsen's music springs from his extensive experience and versatility. In a review of a recent concert, which premiered his own compositions in Vevey, Switzerland, Jean Cossetto calls Carter Larsen "The Last of the Romantics…the message certainly came across! The audience was captivated by the charm of 'La Lumiere de L'amour' a most impressive piece, illuminated with elaborate flourishes.
'The Seagulls of Capri' equally appealed with its virtuoso passages, arpeggios, and triplets played with style and enthusiasm. The melancholy and passion of 'Bridges and Beyond' was expressed with eloquence and brio. 'Film Fantasia', an extended improvisation, played with abandon and depth of feeling, delighted the audience who heartily applauded the composer-pianist".

In a recent review of Carter's performance at St. Martins-in-the-Fields, London critic Christopher Wood proclaims, "Carter Larsen is the first of the New Romantics". Wood observes, " A new Larsen has emerged, playing the dual role of creator and interpreter. Written in a fluid, tonal and highly cinematic style, every sweep of the hands seemed to conjure yet more visual and emotional imagery. Here is a composer with European sensibilities, and yet a natural affinity with the world of Hollywood." "Larsen gave a packed St. Martins a brilliant performance. The opening 'Reminiscence' with its Satie-esque chords, plunged us deep into a pool of tranquility in the throbbing heart of midday London. Then a shimmering right hand contrasted with the declamatory left to produce a finely-wrought climax in Mirage, a musical illusion perfectly complemented by the following, brooding 'Elegie'." "The rippling figures that permeate 'Seagulls of Capri' create a feeling of floating illusion. The power of imagery in 'Bridges and Beyond' boasts a ripe, romantic movie theme richly harmonized and developed with a torrid intensity. The theme from the film 'Pierced Heart' was another strongly cinematic statement, this time reinforced with compelling harmonic shifts."

Carter has chosen his pianos carefully: they have matchless pedigrees, each with a unique provenance of both the owners and the people who played them. These exquisite instruments have been featured in classic films and recordings. He was one of the select artists participating in the 150th anniversary of Bechstein as well as the Tricentennial of the invention of the piano, in Berlin 2003.

Jong talent

As a young American pianist in Europe, Carter Larsen made his name with his spirited performances of the High Romantics. In particular, his interpretations of rare works by composers Liszt, Grieg, Rachmaninoff, and Saint-Saens made a significant contribution to the Romantic Revival and won him acclaim from both audiences and critics alike. After appearing in over 400 concerts with increasing visibility and growing renown, particularly in London, led to major performances with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and London Symphony Orchestra.
Larsen continued his passion for composing, creating numerous works with performances on PBS, BBC, Europe's largest FM stations and cable television worldwide. Carter soon extended his talents to include film composing. In a few short years, he has written music for top studios, such as Paramount and Fox, as well as independent features films, that premiered at Sundance and Cannes Film Festivals. Currently he is scoring Martin Scorsese's film "Something To Believe In", featuring the Dalai Lama.

Carter has worked as composer on over 30 independent and studio feature films for Fox, Paramount, PBS, BBC, and Discovery. Most recently, he is scoring, in collaboration with Anthony Hopkins, Martin Scorsese's new film, "Something To Believe In", featuring the Dalai Lama, directed by Bonnie Palef. This marks the beginning of an exciting composing and performing partnership with Anthony Hopkins.

FEBRUARY 1996
BY BOB BLUMENTHAL AND CHARLES M. YOUNG
THE LESSER-KNOWN TALENTS OF A LEGEND
I n a recording career that has spanned sixty-eight years, the living jazz legend Benny Carter has played almost every musical instrument and has written for virtually every musical situation. An influential alto saxophonist, a brilliant arranger for big bands, and a key figure in the integration of the Hollywood soundtrack studios, Carter has also made a quiet yet persistent mark as a tunesmith. In the weeks surrounding his eighty-eighth birthday, last August, he gathered fourteen leading vocalists to make this last point, and the results are assembled in The Benny Carter Songbook (MusicMasters). Although Carter's playing has reflected modern developments, even his recent songwriting conveys the shapeliness and sophistication commonly identified with stage revues and movie musicals of the past. The world-weary sass that Ruth Brown imparts to "My Kind of Trouble Is You," the fragile optimism that Dianne Reeves shows on "Only Trust Your Heart," and the simple warmth that Shirley Horn finds in "A Kiss From You"to take three examplesindicate that Carter's old-fashioned strategies succeed because his melodies almost sing themselves. Peggy Lee, Joe Williams, and Jon Hendricks are among the other participants, of whom three of the most striking are newer voicesNancy Marano and Carmen Bradford (respectively covering two gems from the 1940s, "Lonely Woman" and "Key Largo"), and Diana Krall, who draws the best of the five new tunes, "Fresh Out of Love." Each singer enjoys lustrous support from the alto sax of the ageless composer and the complementary musings of two players half his age, the cornetist Warren Vache and the pianist Chris Neville.

GAYLORD CARTER
The 'Flicker Fingers' Who Brought The Perfect Song to Life
By Chris Elliott
Excerpted from the March/April 2001 issue of the ATOS journal, Theatre Organ
Gaylord Carter, whose 80-year performance career defined "theatre organist," died November 20, 2000, at age 95. One of the world's renowned silent film accompanists and best-known theatre organists, this incredible human being gave sound to silent movies and introduced whole generations to the joy of the theatre pipe organ.
Observing Gaylord in action at the Orpheum Theatre in 1987, Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith wrote: "...Carter is a national treasure
and ought to be designated
a historical monument."

The organ was Gaylord's lifelong playground, and he used it as his special effects sound stage for silent films, producing thunderous music for battles, ominous chords for villains, and trick sounds for punch lines. "At its best, the music is felt but not noticed," he once told the Los Angeles Times . "When it's right, you should lose yourself in the picture."

The Theatre That Saved Itself
The Embassy, Fort Wayne, Indiana
By Tom Nichols
Excerpted from the March/April 2001 issue of the ATOS journal, Theatre Organ Fort Wayne, Indiana, has been known by many nicknames throughout its history. Perhaps its most curious nickname is The City That Saved Itself the result of sandbag brigades by citizens during the flood of 1982. This particular nickname could also apply to a well-known building that is woven deep into the fabric of that city's history. This is the story of the theatre that saved itself, and of the majestic theatre pipe organ contained within. There is a remarkable and historic building in Fort Wayne at 121 West Jefferson Boulevard: The Embassy Theatre. Here is a movie palace and vaudeville house that is home to a rare original installation Page theatre pipe organ of four manuals and 15 ranks (expanded to 16 ranks in 1990 with the addition of a Brass Trumpet). Originally known as the Emboyd Theatre from its opening on May 14, 1928 until its sale to Alliance Amusement Corporation in 1952, the Embassy was often the last stop for various road shows and acts on their way to Chicago. Top entertainers such as Lawrence Welk, Louis Armstrong, Tony Bennett, Red Skelton, Chico Marx, Doris Day, Duke Ellington, Laurel and Hardy, the Mills Brothers, Perry Como, Count Basie, the Our Gang kids, Cab Calloway, and Artie Shaw have graced its stage. Bob Hope made his first emcee appearance at the Embassy. Performers and patrons alike were impressed with the massive vertical sign on the building's front (then the largest such sign in the entire state) and the vastness of its 3,000-seat interior. The unusually large balcony was noteworthy for having as many seats as the main floor. Architects John Eberson and Alvin Strauss were responsible for the design of the Embassy. The Spanish Revival building included a seven-story, 150-room hotel and a variety of street level shops. Upon entering the lobby, patrons were surrounded by walls of French marble and Italian vaulted ceilings.
