The Knoxville Chamber Orchestra is offering the public a unique chance to see 16-year-old American pianist, Jonathan Biss. This weekend's concerts will consist of David Diamond's Rounds for Orchestra, Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1, Davies' A Welcome to Orkney, and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4 in A Major (or Italian Symphony), said Jim Allen, director of communications. "Both Mendelssohn and Davies wrote these works on places they had visited," Allen said. Rounds for Orchestra will be conducted by the apprentice conductor of the Knoxville Symphony and Knoxville Chamber Orchestras, Navroj Mehta. The apprenticeship allows for hands-on experience, Allen said. The KCO's concert features Biss performing Chopin's work. Biss has won both the Indianapolis and Bloomington Symphony concerto competitions in 1994. His performances include numerous festivals in North America and Europe, and by invitation of Isaac Stern in the Jerusalem Music Encounters last summer. Biss has played at the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival in Detroit with such music greats as James Tocco, Ruth Laredo and Nathaniel Rosen.

http://www.redmagazine.com/newred/articl/penesis/index.cfm
Articles Interviews Gallery Scriabin, The Mystic Composer, Played by Pianist Neil Penesis Recital at Northeastern University, November, 2000 By Robert Kameczura, Classical Music Critic For Red Magazine People either love or hate Scriabin and sometimes both at once. (Yes, this is possible.) The poet Dylan Thomas, with his rich baroque language was a fan of his music, on the other hand Shostakovich, taking the proletariat line perhaps, referred to Scriabin's music as, (allowing for a loose translation), "...our most villainous enemy." Scriabin's music has a hypnotic power quite unlike anything else in music and is a treasure mine for pianists with the technique to take it on. He was a virtuoso pianist and the fact is obvious when one hears his music for piano which is brilliant, fantastic and full of keyboard fireworks. This brings us to the pianist in question, a young wizard of the keyboard, named Neil Penesis, whose recent concert at Northeastern University was a homage to this Russian master. Russian music demands strong fingers but also delicate colors and Penesis is a master of these. He is a pianist somewhat in the Svatislav Richter mold. Even in the triple forte passages the sound of the piano is always carefully modulated, something of an achievement. He also has the ability to bring tenderness and flowing legato to more gentle passages as was shown in the middle part of his program. This featured a magical performance of Ravel's "Un Barque sur l'Ocean" from Ravel's "Miroir," Liszt's Transcendental Etude No. 10, and Chopin's Prelude, opus 28, #16, all of which have some kinship with the music of Scriabin in their elaborate, scintillating textures. A remarkable ability to make arpeggio figurations sound magical and creamy smooth is very much part of this pianists battery of technical skills.

said "No" to parties on leaving Laredo as my life has been one party after another, and I feared I would leave out someone. But Christ Church Episcopal honored me with a gift, a silver cross by James Avery, bestowed by Rev. Sheridan Walker. After church, a reception in the parish hall took place with Sheilah Glassford, Patricia Keck, and Elena Holloway spearheading the affair. Many people brought sandwiches and the Holloways brought a beautiful cake.

La bonne chanson, Op. 61
Upon arriving in Philadelphia and my first year of study at the Curtis Institute, I started learning this difficult-to-perform cycle. In late October of 1979, a great artist of a distinctive elegant style, Pierre Bernac passed away. Though this cycle was hastily prepared, it reminds me of that summer in Orford and how exuberant I felt. I later prepared it with M. Souzay at the Ravel Academy in St. Jean de Luz. During this series of classes, Robin Bauman, the British pianist for the class, pointed out to me the key relationships within the cycle. I then adopted this to my future performances of the work which took place at The Phillips Collection
Thomas Jaber was my courageous pianist in this live radio broadcast of October 31, 1979 (my first recital at Curtis) and we dedicated the performance to the memory of Pierre Bernac.

Festival Artists
The Besparmak International Piano Festival is very proud to welcome pianists of exceptional artistry to perform, teach and adjudicate at this year's festival. Our group of internationally-known artists will be holding master classes, giving workshops, giving recitals and judging the various competitions. All festival participants are able to attend any of the festival events free of charge. Because master classes have necessarily limited enrollments, pianists interested in performing in master classes should send statements of interest as soon as possible. Master classes will be filled by a first come, first served order. Following is a list of the visiting artists who have, at the present time, committed to participating in festival events. Biographies, as well as anticipated acitivites are listed. Several more pianists will be added in the coming months, so check back for up to date postings! Jonathan Sokasits
