throughout the state. He is also the recipient of the first Miriam HorowitzMeckler Award, established by YCA alumna pianist ruth laredo.
http://www.yca.org/jumppanen.html
PAAVALI JUMPPANEN, pianist "Paavali Jumppanen's technique is big and his imaginative daring even bigger. His unusual recital prompted the observation that great artists take you places you haven't been to before. Jumppanen's performance of the Dutilleux Sonata was masterly in its handling of rhythm, color and texture, and in its headstrong, controlled abandon."
- THE BOSTON GLOBE
"Paavali Jumppanen, who gave a recital in the Young Concert Artists Series at the 92nd Street Y, offered a thoughtful, passionate and compelling journey. He performs with immense power and drive, and commands an extraordinary range of colors. The piano sings beautifully, but with a voice that is big and full of expressive possibilities."
- THE NEW YORK TIMES
"At the Kennedy Center, Jumppanen left no doubt that he has the dexterity of a Paganini and the strength of a Titan, from J.S. Bach, to five attention-getters by Liszt to brief tastes of music by his Finnish compatriots, to Dutilleux's Sonata. In Liszt's own daunting 'Mephisto Waltz,' never has the Devil made such a marvelous racket."
- THE WASHINGTON POST TCHAIKOVSKY - Piano Concerto No. 1 in g-flat minor

DICK HYMAN Throughout a busy musical career that got underway in the early '50s, Dick Hyman has functioned as pianist, organist, arranger, conductor, and composer. His versatility in all of these areas has resulted in well over 100 albums recorded under his own name and many more in support of other artists. While developing a masterful facility for improvisation in his own piano style, Mr. Hyman has also investigated ragtime and the earliest periods of jazz and has researched and recorded the piano music of Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, Zez Confrey, Eubie Blake, and Fats Waller which he often features in his frequent recitals. Other solo recordings include the music of Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington. Recent recordings with orchestra are From The Age Of Swing, Swing Is Here, and Cheek To Cheek, while his early explorations on the Moog synthesizer have now been reissued. Mr. Hyman's concert compositions for orchestra include his

Rachmaninoff's Piano Legacy
Article # : Section : THE ARTS Issue Date : 2,990 Words Author : John C. Tibbetts
Pianist Ruth Laredo sifts through the contents of a small cardboard box and pulls out a dark brown wallet. "This belonged to Sergei Rachmaninoff," she says quietly, almost reverently, holding it up, "and you will see when I open it up why it's so special." She pauses while she extracts a photograph from an interior pocket. "I have been told this is the last picture taken of him." He died fifty years ago this month, on March 28, 1943.
The dim, unsmiling face in the photo appears old and drawn. "I don't think anyone's ever published this picture. It's a very, very personal thing."
Laredo's coffee table is covered with an array of other Rachmaninoff papers and memorabiliahis routing schedules, travel diaries, check receipts, photos, and concert programs. The desiderata of the touring concert artist. "Here you see all the things we pianists get to know so well," she says with a rueful grimace. "Look, here's a route book from his 1941 concert tours. It's all in his handwriting. You see, he's not just playing at the big halls in New York or Chicago. It's towns like Lafayette, Poughkeepsie, White Plains, Northampton." She points to an entry on one of the pages. "One thing you notice in these books are the indications, 'Rest Period.'" The handwriting slants diagonally downward. "Those were important. In those last years he was tired from the strain."
