Classical file By DAVID BALLINGRUD, Times Staff Writer Published November 30, 2003 TCHAIKOVSKY, MENDELSSOHN: FIRST PIANO CONCERTOS; LANG LANG, PIANIST; CHICAGO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA/DANIEL BARENBOIM, CONDUCTOR (DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON) - Maybe, if Chinese pianist Lang Lang had stuck to Mendelssohn's work on this CD, it would have more appeal. The Mendelssohn concerto is a bright and personable work, well suited to the pianist's light, nimble touch. As it is, though, Lang Lang and the Chicago Symphony under Daniel Barenboim lead off with the Tchaikovsky, a war-horse if ever there was one - the thunderous brass opening perhaps as famous as any piece of classical music ever written. It's an old story, but worth repeating. Tchaikovsky wrote the piece with a Russian pianist named Nicolai Rubinstein in mind, but Rubinstein hated it, telling the composer to his face it was unplayable and vulgar. Tchaikovsky stood his ground, however, and refused to change a note. The piece has been hugely popular since its premiere in Boston in 1875.

Pianist Lang Lang in Beethoven's Fourth Piano Concerto Philadelphia Orchestra
Lang Lang, Soloist in Beethoven's Fourth Concerto
by
Lyn Bronson
The prospect of hearing pianist Lang Lang in a performance of Beethoven’s Fourth Concerto with the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, with Christoph Eschenbach conducting, left me with mixed feelings. Lang Lang is well known for his expressivity and extraordinary technical control, but somehow I wondered whether Beethoven’s Fourth was an appropriate vehicle for him. Well, it turned out that my fears were totally ungrounded, and what we heard last night at Carnegie Hall was the most memorable performance of this concerto I have heard in fifty years. Lang Lang is a colorist who manages to shape every phrase with a subtle range of tonal color that has to be heard to be believed. He produced an extraordinary variety of pianissimos, sometimes with phrases beginning and ending so softly that we were amazed that the acoustics at Carnegie Hall even permitted such soft sounds to carry with the clarity they did. Moreover, this was not merely a collection of glib pianistic effects, but an example of a master musician using his amazing control for musical purposes rather than for technical display.

E-mail this story Posted on: Wednesday, March 17, 2004 Orchestra shortens MasterWorks By Wayne Harada Advertiser Entertainment Writer Violinist Sarah Chang will be featured with the Honolulu Symphony on May 21 and 22. There will be a visible Chinese presence in the Honolulu Symphony's 2004-05 Halekulani MasterWorks Classical Season. What may not be so obvious this fall is a nearly $1 million cutback in the orchestra's operational budget, from current levels of $7 million to $6.1 million next season, resulting in a shorter 30-week season. "In keeping our focus of being a trend setter in the area of Asian music, we do have quite an (Eastern) presence," said Stephen Bloom, orchestra president. "We're cramming a lot in a smaller unit of time — shrink-wrapping 30 weeks of concerts (down from 34 last year) from a revenue standpoint, into a tighter schedule." The roster of Chinese soloists include:
  • Cho Liang-Lin, the Taiwanese-American violinist, featured in Bernstein's "Serenade."

Born 2nd. November, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
Canadian country singer-songwriter. Original name Kathryn Dawn Lang. Her father, Adam Frederick Lang, was a pharmacist and the family owned the local drugstore, Lang's Pharmacy. Her mother, Audrey, was a teacher. In 1962 the family moved to Consort, Alberta, where kd lang was brought up. Her father left home for another woman when she was 12 years old. As a teenager kd lang became a skilled pianist and guitarist. While preparing to star in a college theatrical production based on the life of Patsy Cline she became familiar with her music. She graduated from Consort High School in 1979 having won the Athletic of the Year award in tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. After leaving school she earned a meagre living in the performing arts, and classical and avant garde music. She took up country music but dropped the tackiness of the rhinestoned outfits and adopted a more spare version of the music. By 1983 she had a group called the Reclines , named partly in honour of Patsy Cline. Their debut album in 1983 was

I just heard Lang Lang perform the Rachmaninoff concerto #2 live, in addition to hearing this CD. Technically competent, although he fakes passages in the last movement of the Rach concerto. However, musically he is still not competent and exhibits student-like phrasing (a bad student). His sense of lyricism and musical taste is highly unrefined and undevelopedhis playing at this point is mere mockery of the great pianists mentioned by the other reviewer. It is resoundingly obvious to me that he has received very little high level teaching, attention, and/or guidance.

Telarc CD-80582 DDD 71:48
The "Rach Three" and the Chinese encore were recorded in front of an audience in Royal Albert Hall at a Proms Concert on August 22, 2001. The Scriabin was recorded on October 20 of that same year at Oberlin College in Ohio under what seem to have been studio conditions. Lang Lang hardly can be accused of overusing the sustaining pedal, and this is particularly noticeable in the Scriabin. The pianist wants us to hear everything, and he relies on his legato playing to prevent the music from sounding dry, even skeletal. Cleverly, he has selected ten etudes that give a portrait in brief of the composer's entire career: he plays the popular C-sharp minor etude from Op. 2, six etudes from Op. 8 (including the famous D-sharp minor etude), two from Op. 42, and one from Op. 65. Lang Lang understands that Scriabin is not Rachmaninoff, and these performances, particularly of the later etudes, while romantic, are angular and not innocent of emotional disturbance. I'm happy Lang Lang is a Telarc artist, and I hope he is given the opportunity to ride more than just warhorses. Chinese pianist Lang Lang is one of the new generation of superstar pianists. He has already won many competitions and performed with many of the most prestigious orchestras in the world. This CD was recorded when he was just 20 years old. The paring of the turbulent and passionate Tchaikovsky concerto with Mendelssohn's more delicate work was Lang Lang's idea - he feels a huge affintiy for both pieces and feels they show 'both sides of what an artist can do'.
