Modern Rock Music News Older News Newer News Former Midwest blues kid Jonny Lang turns into California rocker By: Star Tribune Company
October 13th 2003 11:28am As Jonny Lang, blues-rock guitar wunderkind, maneuvered the streets of this affluent Los Angeles suburb, he sang along with a gospel-tinged piano song. Naaaah. Yeaaaaah! Believe it. Lang, who shot to the top of the blues charts in the mid-'90s as a teenager with an old man's voice and a young man's guitar showmanship, headlined Gov. Jesse Ventura's inaugural ball and toured with B.B. King. But now it's bye-bye, Jonny Blues Boy; hello, soulful California rocker. The Minnesota-bred star has moved, married and been born again spiritually and musically. He quit drinking, stopped smoking and abandoned the blues. On his third album, "Long Time Coming," Lang sounds more like Stevie Wonder than Stevie Ray Vaughan. And he even does a version of a churchy piano ballad set to a rhythm track by get this Eminem. Jonny Lang Rene Macura "I felt at home playing blues guitar for a period, but I never felt at home singing it or writing it. It's not what's in me," said the guitarist/singer, who has sold more than 2 million blues-rock albums. "I grew up listening to soulful rock music; it's always been my preference as far as songs go. Honestly, I never had the blues. I was never this ridiculously tortured guy."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 30, 2004 Star Pianist Lang Lang on Hit TV Series 'Joan of Arcadia' this Week Above: Lang Lang with star Amber Tamblyn Brilliant 21-year-old concert pianist Lang Lang recently joined the cast of the hit CBS series 'Joan of Arcadia' , produced by Sony Pictures Television, for a coveted behind-the-scenes guest spot.
Currently in the midst of a world-wide recital tour, Lang Lang was called to Los Angeles for an exclusive recording session. 'Joan of Arcadia' executive producer Jim Hayman feels Lang Lang was the perfect artist to achieve the sound and inspiration the show needed. "Without Lang Lang we wouldn't have been able to create life and drama within the music," said Hayman, "I never believed we'd be able to get someone of such star magnitude."
In the episode, set to air Friday, April 2nd, Joan (Amber Tamblyn) is frustrated over doing poorly on a math test and God intervenes and advises her to take piano lessons. Joan takes lessons with Eva (guest star Louise Fletcher), an older, bitter piano teacher who lets Joan pay her by cleaning her house. Joan finds an old record of Eva's and is so impressed, she wonders why Eva is so bitter.
The actual piano performances - excerpts from Bach's Partita #6 - were recorded by Lang Lang.

Lang Lang larger than life
By CHARLES WARD
In his return to the Houston Symphony, young Chinese pianist Lang Lang showed again what an exciting performer he can be. Carlos Javier Sanchez /
Special to the Chronicle
Pianist Lang Lang played Beethoven with technical brilliance in a performance May 15 with the Houston Symphony. He is prodigiously gifted technically, as he illustrated so astonishingly Saturday in the encore: his own improvised arrangement of the waltz from Johann Strauss' operetta Di e Fledermaus He filled his version with almost-unbelievable challenges and then tossed them off with teasing nonchalance. It was like watching a master NASCAR driver perpetually on the edge of a catastrophic spin: You know he's in control of the vehicle, yet the possibility of disaster adds a subconscious nervousness to the excitement. The encore was a memorable moment of over-the-top daring — and it was an explanation of why Lang's account of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 was so personable and yet so unconvincing.

Young Virtuoso Pianists to Highlight the Spring of SAC
There is always something exhilarating about the words 'young' and 'new,' reminiscent of the once green leaves turning yellow in autumn before falling to the ground.
In the classical music scene, there have been countless numbers of musicians deemed virtuosos. Many of them retire and fade from the public's memory, yet as many young, new and just as marvelous musicians are constantly being added to the long list of virtuosos.
Among the three, Jablonski will be the earliest to meet local classical fans as the 32-year-old Swedish pianist has his seventh recital here at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on April 13.
Engaging audiences with his dynamic flair, virtuosic skills and handsome face, Jablonski has been firmly established as a popular, critically acclaimed musician. Beginning his musical career as a jazz drummer at the age of 6, he came to prominence as pianist in his early teens, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Warsaw and Krakow. Not very long after that, Jablonski performed together with both the Swedish and Danish Radio Orchestra.
Starry young Turkish pianist Fazýl Say will perform for the first time in Seoul on April 27 at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall.
