The young Chinese pianist Lang Lang made a dramatic entrance onto the world stage in 1999. The Chicago Symphony had asked him at the last minute to replace an ailing Andre Watts.
His emotional exuberance and technical mastery that night quickly made him one of the most heralded new classical performers. He was only seventeen years old.

In this age of hyperbole, wunderkind is an overused word. Yet, there is no denying that the musical world is full of them. If anyone qualifies for that elite group, pianist Lang Lang certainly does. Born in 1982 in Shenyang, China, Lang Lang was a serious piano student at three, won first prize in a local competition and made his 'professional' debut at five, entered the prestigious Beijing Central Music Conservatory at nine, and won first prizes in young pianist competitions in Germany and Japan when he was all of fifteen. He graduated from the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, where he studied under Gary Graffman. H is career breakthrough came in 1999, when he replaced an ailing André Watts at the Ravinia Festival. Critics and the public were falling over themselves with words of praise: 'stunning", "brilliant", "this is a talent in a million". Since then, his career trajectory has been nothing short of meteoric. Now an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, his debut recording of Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn piano concerti has garnered much media attention. His Carnegie Hall recital debut last November was taped by DG for issue in March. The concert itself drew polarized opinions: some found him too flamboyant and eccentric for his own good, while others, arguably the majority in attendance, were dazzled and couldn't get enough. One thing is certain – his is a prodigious talent.

Web Search On the Aisle INDEX Lang Lang At Carnegie Hall: A Star is Born By Philip Anson / April 26, 2001 On the Aisle Lang Lang: A Star is Born Lang Lang, piano Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Carnegie Hall April 26, 2001 It has been a long time since one felt the thrill of discovering a new performer who promises to enrich the music scene for years to come. Last night at Carnegie Hall one had that experience. The 18-year old Chinese-born pianist Lang Lang is hardly an unknown quantity. He made his US debut in 1998 with the Baltimore Symphony, and his big break came in 1999 when he replaced André Watts at the Ravinia Festival. In the last two years he has played with most of the best US orchestras, and his first CD was released last month on Telarc, who signed him up exclusively (though it is only a matter of time before the majors lure him away). Not since the advent of Evgeny Kissin has the piano world been in such a tizzy of excitement. Last night Lang Lang made his New York debut playing Grieg’s Piano Concerto with the Baltimore Symphony, and the prognostications were fulfilled. This is a dynamite pianist. Lang Lang is being called prodigy and Wunderkind, but please recall, he is 18, not 13, at which tender age Kissin and other true prodigies were playing in public. Lang has avoided that dangerous game. He studied in China and has studied at the Curtis Institute of music with Gary Graffman since 1997. He is more or less an adult with adult sensibility. If he never played any better than last night, he would deserve a place among the most accomplished of adults. What must hard-working pianists like André Watts, Emanuel Ax, Lief Ove Andsnes, and Jean-Yves Thibaudet feel when they witness such a precocious blend of technique, sense, and sensibility?

T chaikovsky/Mendelssohn: First Piano Concertos Lang Lang—Chicago Symphony Orchestra—Barenboim Deutsche Grammophon In August of 1999 I was working as an usher at the Ravinia Festival in Highland Park, Illinois, summer home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, when a 17-year-old Chinese boy stepped up to a piano and stole the show. This was the annual Gala Benefit concert, a night of charitable fundraising when the generally relaxed atmosphere of the park is permeated by donors dressed to the nines, fresh from a black tie dinner, and the Pavillon stage features a slew of headliners. That year featured, among others, pianist Leon Fleischer and mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade. It had been announced that the pianist Andre Watts was ill, and the young Lang Lang (he happened to be in town for an audition that day) would be filling in, with the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. Of course the virtuoso elements are covered brilliantly, but I found this to be an annoying performance as perverse in its own way as was Igor Pogorelich's now deleted DG recording with Abbado conducting. Mendelssohn's concerto, which also has been in Lang's repertory for many years, fares better; there is plenty of facile note-spinning, but there are many other recordings that bring more meaning to the music, notably those by Perahia, Serkin, Hough and Thibaudet.
One wonders why Sony has yet to release Arcadi Volodos' recording of the Tchaikovsky made several years ago with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Seiji Ozawa.

Just got home from experiencing Lang Lang playing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11 accompanied by the Seattle Symphony. Rarely have I been so moved by live music and I've heard most everything. Had me in tears with the first few notes and I didn't know I liked Chopin. I gather it was an exceptional performance of this piece as everyone was on their feet and it took four curtain calls to get us to quiet down. Just amazing. I've been following him a bit since his was one of the earlier SACDs. Got hooked on his way with the music. Well, back to the ole stereo under clear Seattle skies, Gill

The second recital in Korea of Lang Lang, 21-year-old Chinese-American pianist, is going to be held on Thursday, May 6, 2004 at 7:30pm in Concert Hall, Seoul Arts Center. Don't miss this Lang Lang's delicate piano touch and dazzling performing stage.
Since his dramatic and triumphant last-minute appearance at Chicago¡¯s Ravinia Festival in 1999 (filling in for an ailing Andre Watts), the extraordinary young pianist Lang Lang has moved from strength to strength, making each successive debut with ease and grace, always inspiring the critics to superlatives. "Lang Lang is a sensation," said BBC Music Magazine. "He can tackle anything in the repertoire with an apparently effortless aplomb that is almost unnervingly serene...this is a talent in a million." Lang Lang made his sold-out Carnegie Hall debut with Yuri Temirkanov and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in April 2001, and The New York Times raved: "He is stunning...the audience was on its feet shouting before the final notes had died away."
Since then, he has made his debut at the BBC Proms (at the Royal Albert Hall), performing Rachmaninov's Third Piano Concerto with Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. Telarc was on hand to capture Lang Lang¡¯s stunning performance in a live recording: Lang Lang: Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No. 3 / Scriabin Etudes. "The dazzling technique one quickly took for granted," said The Guardian; "The constant wonder was the extraordinary energy of his playing, the ability to shape every paragraph with total certainty, the unswerving focus...a complete artist." The Times proclaimed "This could well be history in the making."
