CAMPBELL SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC It is the rare young musician who ends a concert with a duet with his father. But then pianist Lang Lang is not your ordinary virtuoso. MUSIC REVIEW PIANIST LANG LANG WHEN: Tuesday night WHERE: Meany Hall There is plenty of young talent today on several continents plying the waters of European masters before eager audiences. However, Lang has caught the world's imagination, perhaps in part because Chinese pianists are rare, but also because he is so young 20 something and so wildly talented. Exuberant too. He made his local debut two years ago on the UW President's Piano Series at Meany Hall, returning in the fall to play with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Lang made an enormous impression. So it was not surprising his recital Tuesday night at Meany Hall sold-out well in advance. There was a buzz inside the hall and one outside where people stood anxiously waiting for a returned ticket. Wearing a midnight blue silk jacket, in a Chinese style, Lang did not disappoint. He had his customary verve, astonishing speed, power and ready command. Boldness was coupled with reserve and thundering fortes with delicate pianos. As committed as he is to flamboyance and awesome technical displays, he does not mistake bravura for musicianship.

LANG LANG
I CARNEGIE HALL Friskt klaverspill

Av Henning Høholt
Lang Lang live at Carnegie Hall
With works by Schumann, Haydn, Schubert, Tan Dun and Liszt

Of course the virtuoso elements are covered brilliantly, but I found this to be an annoying performance as perverse in its own way as was Igor Pogorelich's now deleted DG recording with Abbado conducting. Mendelssohn's concerto, which also has been in Lang's repertory for many years, fares better; there is plenty of facile note-spinning, but there are many other recordings that bring more meaning to the music, notably those by Perahia, Serkin, Hough and Thibaudet.
One wonders why Sony has yet to release Arcadi Volodos' recording of the Tchaikovsky made several years ago with the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Seiji Ozawa.
