~ Critical Acclaim ~ Antonin Kubalek has become a best-selling international recording artist. His awarded and Juno nominated CD recordings on the prestigious Dorian label have won him extraordinary praise in such publications as the American Record Guide, Fanfare Magazine, CD Review, and Gramophone Magazine: ...his readings of Schumann and Brahms provide a rare mix of improvisatory freedom and structural control: with such rare playing, one's grasp of the musical architecture is enhanced precisely because of the rare spontaneity through which it is realized... (Glenn Gould)ed... (Glenn Gould) ...some of the most enjoyable moments in recent piano-recital memory... ...his wonderful Chopin interpretation of the F Minor Ballade alone was worth the price of admission... ...here was the essence of subtlety and refinement with those rare glimpses into the inner message of the music... (Toronto Star) ...this music sounded like it had been wrought from pure gold... ...the concert also proved once again the incalculable benefits this country received when the Russian tanks invaded Czechoslovakia. We have in Kubalek one of the finest interpreters of this century right in our midst... Grieg, The Three Violin Sonatas

biography
Receiving three standing ovations following his performance at the Prague Spring Festival this year, it is evident that pianist Antonin Kubalek’s artistry and musicianship continues to command respect and appreciation from audiences and critics internationally. With playing that has become synonymous with `perfection of style, precision and beauty of sound and interpretation', he remains one of the most prominent pianists in North America. With a special affinity for the music of Czech composers, his breadth of repertoire also spans the classical to the most challenging contemporary composers. Canadian contemporary music is impressively and thoroughly represented by Mr. Kubalek's numerous premieres and recordings, many of which are commissioned by him. Equally at home with chamber repertoire, his chamber recordings include the Dvorak's Piano Quintets with the Lafayette String Quartet and earlier recordings with the likes of the Vaghy Quartet. Antonin Kubalek, a respected educator, has served on the faculties of The Royal Conservatory of Music, University of Toronto, York University, the Prague Conservatory and the Prague Academy. As a preeminent teacher, Mr. Kubalek is often invited to colleges and universities throughout North America where he gives masterclasses, seminars, and coaching sessions. His expertise is also in demand on both national and international juries.

~ Special events ~
January 6, 2004 (Toronto) - Following the success of last summer's first annual Antonin Kubalek International Piano Program in the Czech Republic, the organizers announced the continuation and preparations for the second annual piano program. Held in Zlate Hory (Gold Mountains), this program offers a 'golden' opportunity for selected young pianists across Europe to receive an inspiring regiment of both private instruction and master classes during the period with Mr. Kubalek and other esteemed colleagues. Based on the accomplishments of the first year's program, the organizers have also extended the 2004 program to two weeks (July 7 - 21, 2004). More information regarding this can be found at http://www.kubalekpianocourses.com Pianist Antonin Kubalek ’s artistic victory from his Rudolfinum recital at the 2002 International Prague Spring Festival set a benchmark acclaim both critically and popularly. The Czech magazine Hudebni Rozhledy (Musical Observer) said of his performance that "with attentive listening, one comes to realize that he possesses a consistently refined touch, so that any polyphonic writing sounds wonderfully vivid." That same year, Antonin was the recipient of the 2002 UNESCO award for his life-long commitment to the promotion and performance of Czech repertoire internationally and contribution to the definition of musical beauty.

Stephen W. Moore Music Reviews This page contains descriptions of some of my favorite pieces. Please note some of these reviews were written before my PHOENIX system was completed. Enya A Day Without Rain Akin to a glass of Grand Mariner. Full, sweet, and immensely satisfying; leaving the warm afterglow to savor. Boxy speakers ruin the experience; where’d the ambiance go? Don’t even try it with minimonitors , the soundstage may be there, but the rest of the music lacks the ethereal elements. The recording itself isn’t the five stars it could be, but it is still horribly difficult to playback; requires excellence all the way around. Fun to listen to on any system, you can hear what it should sound like it in your head; almost invoking an imaginary world trying to force yourself to hear the magic that’s missing. Once you hear it right, you’ll never hear it the same again. Randy Travis, Down at the Old Corral (Wind in the Wire, 9 45319-2) Country music? How can he make his voice do this; the lower midbass of his voice is nothing less than jaw-dropping; separates the men from the boys.

Antonin Kubalek was a member of the wave of Czech artists, intellectuals and professionals that came to Canadian shores in the wake of the 1968 Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia. It was one of those dramatic reverse brain-drains with which this country has been blessed from time to time. It may have been unfair that the CBC, when it recorded him shortly after his arrival, was only willing to entrust him with repertoire from his own country, repertoire in which his playing would not have to bear comparison with dozens of competing recordings in other words. He was soon to prove that he needn't fear such comparisons. Yet there's no denying that he was awfully good at the Czech stuff. Echiquer Records has reissued some of the original CBC recordings and the results are bound to please anyone who admires Kubalek's work or is a fan of mildly out-of-the-way piano repertoire.
