Philips Classics recently released the first volumes in its Great Pianists of the 20 th Century Julius Katchen's career ended prematurely when cancer claimed him at age 42. In the brief time that was available to him, he become known as a superior interpreter of Brahms's piano music. (The complete solo piano works can be heard on London/Decca 455 247-2.) Interestingly, he was the first pianist to be heard on a solo LP (the Brahms Sonata for Piano included here), and also the first to be heard on a concerto LP (Rachmaninoff's Second, with conductor Anatole Fistoulari.) Katchen's first teachers were his musically gifted grandparents, and he also studied with David Saperton. He was playing concertos with the Philadelphia Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic before he was a teenager. An intellectual young man, Katchen received degrees in English literature and philosophy from Haverford College before he was twenty. As with Stephen Kovacevich (below), Europe, rather than his native America, was his center of professional activity.

Stephen Kovacevich (then Stephen Bishop Kovacevich) didn't quite manage to record all 32 of Beethoven's piano sonatas when he was under contract to Philips Classics. Since switching to EMI Classics, he has restarted the cycle, but he has taken a long time over it. With this release, he moves tantalizingly closer to the end as he tackles the "Hammerklavier," the most challenging sonata of the 32. Most pianists would emphasize the difference between the "Hammerklavier" and "Les Adieux" Sonatas. Kovacevich chooses to draw lines of connection between the two. As a result, the latter work becomes less cute than it sometimes is. The sadness of parting and the joy of returning are taken at face value, not with ironic distancing. Other readings are more "unbuttoned." Kovecevich's sober interpretation takes the music literally. The eleven Op. 119 Bagatelles separate the two sonatas. Again, Kovacevich soft-pedals Beethoven the trickster and vulgarian and emphasizes the composer's stylistic consistency and integrity.

You need Quick Time Player, you may download it http://www.quicktime.com Stephen Montague was born and educated in USA, and he has lived in Europe since 1972, first in Warsaw as a Fulbright Scholar, and since 1974, in London where he is based as a free lance composer. He has written for all medium and his works have been performed by orchestras, chamber groups and soloist world wide. Recent events have included performances by The London Symphony Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington,DC), a Norwegian military band, the Hilliard Ensemble and soloist such as pianist Stephen Kovacevich and Marc Hamlin and percussionist, Evelyn Glennie.
He has collaborated with Maurice Agis since 1992 when he composed the first Bright Interiors , electroacustic sound environment, an integral part of the sculpture.
The music emanates from points throughout the space, but it is actually performed over a matrix of 16 loudspeakers installed out of sight of the public. The musical sounds are made both from the natural world like human voice, wood blocks and water, and from electronic sounds produced by computer. Bright Interiors III was created at EMS, the Electronic Music Studios of the University of Texas at Austin, while Montague was a guest professor at the university from January through May, 2000. It begins with sounds of breath from the natural world which are gradually transformed to something far beyond the original source. The 16 channels of sound work as a series of 8 one hour long 2 channel loops. Each loop is a different length which interacts differently with its neighbour as they get further and further out of sync in the course of a day run. The different loop lengths mean that they always interact with each other in a completely unique way and so provide an amazing variety of relationships analogous to the continually changing colour relationships found in the sculpture.

Titel Artikelnr.

Average customer rating: Got me through my doctorate I love this CD. Anyone been through high stress times and found a CD that calmed you to the point you could function? That is what this CD did for me. I listened to it in the lab and while I was writing my dissertation. Now I am looking for a CD for my baby and decided to look this up to find some like it. Really really enjoyed it. But I guess I said that.

Media: Audio CD Manufacturer: Philips Product Description: The three sets of bagatelles cover an extraordinary range of music. The op.33 set are playful, light-hearted miniatures. Beethoven was writing the last three piano sonatas at the time of the later op.119 and op.126 sets, and it shows. Some of these pieces could well hold up their heads in that company. Stephen Bishop Kovacevich tackles these pieces with relish. He gives the performance some 'welly' when it needs it, but where he really scores is in his light-fingered approach, sprinkling grace notes delightfully and perfectly capturing this music whose easy-going nature completely belies the reality of the composer's life. (He was profoundly deaf by the time he wrote the later sets of bagatelles.) The variety in the music is astonishing. Listen to how Beethoven cooks up a storm at the end of the seventh bagatelle of op.119 before relaxing completely in the eighth. And he makes his point in these pieces in as little as nine secondsonly the last number of op.126 plays for longer than four minutes. Bishop Kovacevich has some stiff competition for these pieces in Alfred Brendel, but has something very much his own to say about this enjoyable and fairly neglected repertoire.
