STEPHEN KOVACEVICH
Stephen Kovacevich was born in Los Angeles in 1940 and made his debut as a pianist at the age of 11. At the age of 18 he moved to England to study with Dame Myra Hess. He has had a long and distinguished career as a concert pianist and is particularly noted for his radical interpretations of the classical repertoire. Stephen Kovacevich records exclusively for EMI Classics and is currently recording the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas. His release of the Beethoven Op.31 sonatas prompted Robert Layton to write "Even if you have other versions of these sonatas get this disc, for I believe that if the series continues as it has begun, the Kovacevich cycle will occupy a standing not far short of that enjoyed by Schnabel in the heyday of 78s or Kempff in the early days of LP." Syrinx and the Prokofiev Sonata.
Although strongly associated with the Classical masters, Stephen Kovacevich has commissioned, with the support of the Arts Council of England, a solo piano work Southern Lament by fellow American, Stephen Montague, which received its world premiere at the 1997 Cheltenham International Music Festival. Further performances were given in the US and London, including the BBC Proms and the Royal Festival Hall. He has also performed chamber music recitals with artists such as Lynn Harrell, Michael Collins, Antonio Pappano, Barbara Hendricks and Cecilia Bartoli.

Stephen Kovacevich, Piano
The Classical source
'The blinkered spirits who thought the composer of the Hammerklavier mad were themselves deluded; but a touch of madness in the works' performance helps, as this disciplined but ferocious, at times profoundly tender, account shows. Kovacevich's playing gives the paradoxical impression of rigorous control that it might lose at any moment. It combines tremendous rhythmic thrust, wildness and the stillness of the eye of the storm, and also a nice sense of the quirkiness writ large of which the Op 119 Bagatelles, included here, are a miniature but characteristic example. The disc is rounded off by a dazzlingly eloquent performance of the Les Adieux sonata'.

Stephen Kovacevich is the most superb specialist of Beethoven who is critiqued to have 'recreated Beethoven' brings his truly Beethoven works to Korea for his third concert. From Pianissomo to fortissimo, he plays the entire gamut with courtesy and perfection. He has recorded complete 32 Beethoven piano sonatas with EMI for 10 years since 1992.

Perhaps nobody else can play the piano with this degree of precision and turn it to such musically intense ends ¡¯ The Independent, 18 December 2002 (Mozart K491/London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Festival Hall)
Stephen Kovacevich has had a long and distinguished career as a concert pianist. His interpretations of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert are renowned.
His performance is exact and melancholic at the start, unfolding organically, coherently, with a tender Arietta that ends up heaven-storming. ¡¯ Over the last 10 years Kovacevich has recorded Beethoven¡¯s 32 piano sonatas. This journey, now completed, will be issued as a box set by EMI this autumn.
As a tribute to his interpretations of works of Beethoven, Stephen Kovacevich was recently featured in a six-concert project ¡®Kovacevich, Beethoven and the Piano¡¯ The project, in collaboration with the Harrods International Piano Series, the London Philharmonic and the South Bank Centre, included the Emperor Concerto with Kurt Masur in the UK and Germany, three Beethoven recitals in the Royal Festival Hall, playing/directing the London Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and a public masterclass.

Stephen Kovacevich, born 1940, might be the most under-rated pianist of his generation, which includes Maurizio Pollini, Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim, and Richard Goode. He is among the most interesting living players of Beethoven, and is also tremendous in Brahms, Bartok, and Schubert. He has lived in England his whole adult life and doesn't play in the US that often, but if you keep your eyes open, you might be able to catch him here. Stephen Kovacevich
There can be few pianists who are on par with Stephen Kovacevich. His mastery of piano, his superb, profound, often radical, approach to music, especially to those of Beethoven, has made him one of the most respected pianist this world has ever had. Born in 1940, in Los Angeles, Kovacevich has studied with Lev Shorr. He made his début in San Francisco in 1951. During his younger years, Kovacevich had enjoyed playing his favourite composers' works - Chopin and Liszt. He went to London in 1959 to study with Dame Myra Hess, as a scholarship student. It is through Dame Myra Hess that Kovacevich fell in love with Beethoven. Even though many years has passed, Kovacevich still pays his tribute to Dame Myra Hess, for she has greatly influence his playing and musicianship. Kovacevich made his London début in Wigmore Hall in 1961. He has since travelled around the world, giving solo recitals and appearing as soloist in concertos. Kovacevich is also active in recording industry. He is currently working on a project to record all Beethoven's piano sonatas, under contract with EMI. Stephen Montague (b. Syracuse, New York, 1943) grew up in West Virginia and Florida. He studied piano, conducting and composition at Florida State University, received a doctorate from Ohio State University (1972) and won a Fulbright Fellowship to work in Warsaw, Poland, 1972-74. From Poland he came to England first as a musician with Strider Dance Co. (Richard Alston and co.), but since 1975 has worked as a freelance composer based in London but touring world-wide. His music has been widely performed, featuring in numerous international festivals including the BBC Promenade Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall, the Warsaw Autumn Festival, Paris Festival d'automne, Singapore, Hong Kong and the Kennedy Center (Washington DC). Major commissions have included a piano concerto for the BBC Proms, the Hilliard Ensemble, pianist Stephen Kovacevich, the International Computer Music Asociation, and a 35 minute work for narrator and orchestra for the BT Celebration Series premiered by the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican Centre, London, with a further 14 performances by other leading British orchestras around the country. Although a long-term UK resident, his compositional influences are transatlantic. He comments: "I have lived in Britain since 1974 but my musical heroes remain American: I admire Charles Ives's unapologetic juxtaposition of vernacular music and the avant-garde, Henry Cowell's irreverent use of fist and arm clusters, the propulsive energy of minimalism and John Cage's radical dictum the 'all sound is music'".
