Artists Composer Jury Choirs ... Past Participants Scala Scala is the name of a youth choir set up in 1996 under the impulse of the brothers Steven and Stijn Kolacny. Stijn conducts and Steven is the pianist and project counselor. In 1999 the Choir won the 'Choir of the Year' biennial competition, held by the three Belgian choral federations. In 2000 they won the 48th European Youth Music Festival held in Belgium. Also in that year they did a Christmas tour of Belgium. The last concert was held in the presence of the royal family and broadcast by many TV stations on Christmas Eve. At the beginning of 2001 the choir performed with the Belgian rock group Hooverphonic and in July of that year they were invited to participate in the Hamamatsu World Youth Choir Festival in Japan. Stijn Kolacny Stijn Kolacny started his piano studies when he was 8 years old and violin studies a year later and is the winner of several international competitions. He started studying orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag in the Netherlands with Kenneth Montgomery in 2001. Enerzijds als het Kolacny-pianoduo en anderzijds als oprichters en bezielers van het jeugdkoor Scala bezorgen zij de klassieke- en koormuziek een nieuwe jeugd. Als pianoduo genieten de Kolacny-broers internationale erkenning en werden zij gelauwerd in binnen- en buitenland. Met twintig vingers en een Steinway-piano vertolken zij op meesterlijke wijze het repertoire van Schubert, Brahms, Dvorak,... Zopas ontvingen zij voor de tweede maal de prestigieuze Diapason d'or. Een prijs uitgereikt door het gezaghebbende Franse tijdschrift Diapason voor hun cd Hongaarse dansen van Johannes Brahms. Broers in de muziekwereld, het lijkt een succesformule: Bart en Stijn Peeters, Koen en Kris Wauters, Raf en Mich Walschaerts (Kommil Foo). Was het een doelbewuste keuze? Het groeide zonder het te beseffen, ons grootvader had een buffetpiano, waarop wij regelmatig speelden. Het samenspelen kende in onze tienerjaren uiteraard wel ups en downs wegens het leeftijdsverschil. Maar toen wij 15 en 21 waren, namen wij definitief de draad weer op. Zowel wijzelf als het publiek beleefden er heel wat plezier aan. Je moet gewoon het gevoel hebben dat je met elkaar kan werken. Het spelen van piano met vier handen is echter niet makkelijk. Wij zijn allebei opgeleid als klassiek solo-pianist maar spelen amper nog solo. Het samenspel is enorm delicaat en vraagt veel repetities. Maar zo mag het natuurlijk niet overkomen!

In mei 2000 werd Scala winnaar van het 48 ste Europese Muziekwedstrijd voor de Jeugd. In december 2000 maakte Scala een kerst-tournee van een 15-tal concerten doorheen België. Deze reeks eindigde in het Koninklijk Paleis waar Scala een kerstconcert mocht verzorgen voor de koninklijke familie. Dit concert, in aanwezigheid van de ganse koninklijke familie, werd uitgezonden door verschillende TV-stations op kerstavond. En in juli reisde Scala naar Japan om deel te nemen aan het Hamamatsu World Youth Choir Festival in Hamamatsu (Japan), een grote eer omdat op dit vijfjaarlijkse festival slechts enkele ‘overzeese’ koren uitgenodigt! Eind 2001 werd het koor uitgekozen door het koninklijk hof om op zondag 9 december in een kasteelkapel van Ciergnon de doopplechtigheid van prinses Elizabeth op te luisteren en trad op in “De laaste week” van Ben Crabbé.

Stijn is vaste dirigent, Steven is pianist en schrijft alle Scala-arrangementen. SCALA CD'S In november 2002 krijgt Scala plots grote naambekendheid door de release van de CD "Scala on the Rocks". Het concept om rocksongs om te zetten naar een meisjeskoor doet stof opwaaien in binnen- en buitenland. Scala on the Rocks werd uitgegeven bij Pias en is een live-registratie van een On the Rocks concert van Scala. De tracks worden gedraaid op Studio Brussel, Radio 1, Radio 2 en Donna. Op de track listing o.a. Smells like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Creep (Radiohead), Someone New (Eskobar/Heather Nova). De CD haalt na exact 1 jaar verkoop in Belgie GOUD (25000 verkochte exemplaren), maar ook Frankrijk is een groot succes (35000 verkochte exemplaren). Na het succes van de eerste Scala on the Rocks CD trekt het meisjeskoor in de zomer van 2003 naar de Galaxy Studio in Mol voor de opnames van de tweede On the Rocks CD die de titel "Dream On" kreeg, naar de gelijknamige song van Depeche Mode.
