The recordings of Howard's are much more expensive than those of Kocsis'... Unfortunately Kocsis these days concentrates on his carrier as a conductor as he is in charge of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra (the oldest orchestra still playing in Hungary), so he doesn't have too much time to make recordings or to play at concerts. Although on their latest tour in the US he played the solo part of the E-flat concerto with the HNPO... Plus if we look further than only Liszt: Kocsis is an excellent interpreter of Debussy, Ravel, Dohnanyi and Bartok - i don't know how is Howard's extra-Liszt repertoire. (it might well be fabulous though...)

His extraordinary gift for music became evident at a very early age. He commenced his musical studies when he was 5 years old and continued them at the Béla Bartók Conservatory from 1963, specializing in piano and composing. In 1968 he was admitted to the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, where Pál Kadosa and Ferenc Rados were his teachers. Already during his school years, he won the Hungarian Radio’s Beethoven competition and after finishing his studies, he was appointed in 1973 as a teacher to the Academy’s piano faculty. His first important debuts both at home and abroad were also in 1970. During the following 25 years he gave concerts practically all over the world excepting Africa and South America. From the start, reviews referred to him as a prodigy and a lion of the piano, who rose above his contemporaries with his virtuosity and his personality of elemental strength. (1981 Le Figaro writes about the genius, 1987 the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger mentions the miracle of the keyboard , 1990 the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes about the pianist above all criticism etc). Apart from his solo concerts, which were all great successes from Carnegie Hall and the Concert gebouw of Amsterdam to the Philharmonics of St Petersburg, he performed together with the world’s most famous orchestras , such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Dresdner Staatskapelle, the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia of London, the Weiner Philharmoniker etc. He regularly performs at different famous summer festivals (Edinburgh, Tours, Luzern, Salzburg, Prague Spring Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron).

T T I n 1979 Csapo is given a post as professor of music at the Bartok Conservatory, where he is in charge of ear training, orchestration, musical theory and chamber music, and he stays there until 1983. Then he travels to the United States, while continuing as a lecturer at the Liszt Academy. Three years before he had paid a short visit to this country, where he became interested in the American musical panorama, since the NMS had been in close professional contact with the American avantgarde, having premiered several works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Christian Wolff, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, La Monte Young, Frederick Rzewski, Charlemagne Palestine and others, in spite of the dislike that the Hungarian government had for them, hardly "tolerating" them, given the Communist Party policies with regard to American cultural interference. The NMS members were not prosecuted as political instigators, however, thanks to the fact that the works they performed had no explicit texts whatsoever.
