From March 21 through April 4, an absolutely stunning array of musical offerings will sound forth from churches, museums, synagogues, theaters and concert halls in the stately old town just down the coast from Charleston. About 100 world-class artists will be in Savannah performing approximately the same number of events in this 15th edition of the Savannah Music Festival. The $1.3 million festival takes place all over the area and on the waterfront. Genres include classical, jazz, blues, international and other styles, among them gospel, zydeco, dawg, rock, Mexican, world sacred and Brazilian. Dawg, according to the festival's program, is "a melange of swing, bluegrass, latin, jazz and gypsy." Tickets to festival performances range from $15 to $60. The festival opens next Sunday with one of its signature series, the Opening Night Gold Medalists Concert of the American Traditions Competition, a showcase for up-and-coming vocalists. Gold medalists, the four winners since 2000, will compete for a $10,000 prize. The show will be held at the Lucas Theater for the Arts, a restored Italian Renaissance-style movie palace, with gold-leaf-accented decorative moldings and all.

Knauer nimmt sich viel Zeit für die kontemplativen Ecksätze, meißelt die schroffen Akkorde des Kopfsatzes wie in Granit, beweist im langsamen Finale Mut zum Extrem in der Tempogestaltung – er ist drei Minuten langsamer als Bernstein in seiner alten Aufnahme (RCA, gestrichen) – und zeigt viel Gespür für die flexiblen Rhythmen des zentralen Vivace.

Piano maestro in double act Shanghai Star. 2003-03-06 THE noted pianist Xu Zhong will take the baton of the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra when German piano maestro Sebastian Knauer gives a concert on March 15. Organizers said Sebastian Knauer has just finished performing and directing all 27 Mozart Piano Concertos with the Hamburg Philharmonic and is coming to the city to prepare for the concert with Xu Zhong, an event which will be the first of its kind. Xu Yingzhi, spokeswoman for the concert, said, "Sebastian Knauer was regarded as piano prodigy when he gave his concerto debut at the age of 13 after winning numerous competitions." Knauer has since worked with many of the major orchestras in the world, such as the NDR-Symphony, the Hamburg State Philharmonic, the Hamburg Symphony, the Vienna Chamber, the Netherlands Chamber and the Israel Chamber Orchestra. Together with other distinguished musicians, such as Philippe Entremont, Knauer regularly performs repertoire for two pianos. This time Xu Zhong will join Knauer to present the Double Piano Concertos of Mozart.
